I'm not a technical person in any since of the word, I have a K3 and it is a fine one. I spent from 1971 until the early 2000 with a PENTAX Spotmatic, really love that camera, then made the switch to digital, K5 then a K3, I gave the K5 to my granddaughter who wanted a "real camera" I'm still leaning and so is she. If the RAW image is saved as a TIFF, why does the owners manual say all images are saved as JEPG. Not trying to be a smart ass just would like to know, will help me be a better photographer..Thanks it is really nice to talk to some one who knows lots about photography.

Raw vs jpeg

Ok! So I'm fairly new to Digital photography, couple of years or so, one thing that has puzzled me is RAW vs JPEG images. As I Iook through the photos posted here I see a lot of folks talking about shooting RAW images so I went to my owners manual and tried to figure out how to take RAW photos and how to save them, not a hard task. The manual says I can take Raw photos but, then have to develop and them as a JPEG. So the question is why do i need RAW if it has to be developed to JPEG? I am assuming (not good) that if you take an image in RAW when it is developed to JPEG it retains the same quality as the RAW,image. Again I know I can take RAW, but when do it if the resulting image is about the same as shooting as JPEG? As always thank you all for the help, it outstanding and I really appreciate it.

Very nice photo, a little blur always seems to make action photos a little more real to me. Love the shot.

Mirror lockup vs mirror down shooting

I now have a K3 ya'lls replies I understand why. Thank you one and all, this is why I love this site, and have been shooting with mirror down. I have been reading the owners manual and came across the mirror up section but it did not explain why to use mirror up shooting, just that you could. I have also seen post on the forum speaking of shooting with mirror up but no explanation of why to do it. After reading your comments I now understand, seems mirror up would be great in portrait work. Again thank you all for very informative comments, I'm learning.

If you live in Central Florida you need to take a trip to Blue Cypress Lake, it's about 25 miles west of Vero Beach on State Hwy 60. Take the Turn Pike from Orlando, to Yee Haw Junction then about 6 miles east of Yee Haw, dirt road to ur left. U will need a boat. There is bait shop there that rents boat. You will fill your SD card, beautiful lake. Tons of cypress trees and Ospreys nest there in spring and summer.

Yesterday I went to a Yard Sale and picked up an SMC PENTAX - M F2.8 100mm for all of $10, It is in very goof condition. It has a filter on it that I'm not familiar with. The nomenclature on it reads KENKO first letter is either an O or an 8 then it could be a S then kylight as I look at more and more I think it is SKYLIGHT,
but not sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Second thing, asked for advice on getting a DSLR for my granddaughter one of you suggested I give her my K5 and buy a newer camera, so I headed his advice and purchased a KIII, nice camera. Just wanted to say thanks for the great advice.

My granddaughter recently asked me if I would buy her a digital camera because she wants to explore real photography and stop using the cell phone, She will be 21 next month and of course it will be a PENTAX. I have a K5 with several lenses, but as you all know dslrs can be expensive. I just need your opinions on a good starter PENTAX dslr one not too expensive, (of course thounds of dollars is out of the question) but one that will provide her with good quality, photos. HUGE! can of worms I know. Any and all opinions will be welcome.

thank you all very much

I love callas they are my favorite flower. Back in the 30s through the 70s my grand parents raised and sold them, they had close to 100 plants, When Henry Ford died the train he was on stopped in Daytona Fl. and my grand parents took a spay to the station. they were supposedly placed on Mr. Fords body. At lease that's what the family says. Beautiful shot only nature can make such an arrangement, only a great photograph can make a great photo. GREAT SHOT!!!
