I’m sure this has been mused before, but why did most film companies abandon the 6x7 format when moving to digital? Contax and Pentax are pretty much the main culprits. This also kind of helps me, because I’m torn between saving for a 645Z or a 67 (when I get consistently good film shots and development). When you bump up to MF, those are the two most accessible companies. Yes, Hasselblad makes extremely fine digital bodies, but the mainstream consumer doesn’t want to sell their first born and donate a kidney for a camera. With all the benefits of a larger sensor size, it would seem that 6x7 would offer the greatest benefit, in terms of MF, when compared to 6x4.5. Looking at the size of the film it clearly shows that 6x7 is almost 4x as large as 35mm, while IMO, 6x4.5 appears to only be 2-2.5x’s larger. So, yeah, why did pretty much everybody abandon the size for 6/4.5?

You know how they say to never meet your heroes? Since I got serious about photography, I held the Three Amigos on this mountain high above mere mortals. The opportunity recently presented itself for me to pick up the 77 for a very reasonable price, and I did. Was I worried everyone was blowing this lens out of proportion. Short and sweet: no, no they are not. Once COVID allows for more frequent photography trips, I plan on seeing what this baby can do. Until then, enjoy a photo my cat (who is notoriously impossible to photograph).

I shot this while attending the University of Glasgow in April in 2018. I took so many shots of Bute Hall and the university tower that night, and this was the one that was the most “possible”. This shot is handheld (yes with a 1/4s SS) I returned to the spot after another rain squall another night, but the charm of the original (this one) was not there.

Aesthetically, that’s not what I’m looking for, but honestly? The 400 might not be a bad idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am very much in the “hobby photographer” category, but I’d say people who’re truly passionate about photography use what they have, and grow comfortable with the individual quirks, strengths, and shortcomings their gear has. My FA 28-70, has unreliable autofocus. Before I realized this, some shots came out tack sharp, while others much less so. Now, if I even question the final resolution of what I’m shooting, I switch to manual to ensure I get what I want. It’s been more or less mated to my K1 since I got the camera.

The posting is offering to ship them via PayPal goods and services with tracking. He did say he recently lost his job, and “a buddy “gave” him these lenses, but that “buddy” also sold his Pentax cameras. But now that I’m thinking about it, it does seem to be too good to be true. He has no profile picture, and doesn’t seem to be too active. I guess the dazzle of getting these two lenses blinded me. ---------- Post added 02-24-20 at 04:31 AM ---------- So yeah, I did end up getting cold feet, and backing out. I’ve been saving for the DFA 15-30, but this deal seemed too good to pass up. Wide angle it is. Thanks for all your input, and better judgement.

Unless it was on a sticker, there’s nothing on the bottom. The pentaprism has the ACO diamond on it, but nothing indicating country of manufacture. ---------- Post added 02-18-20 at 11:03 AM ----------

That’s what I thought too. My ME Super and the other ME’s I got in that lot all have Asahi opt. Co. Japan on them. I’ve seen some on eBay that don’t have country of manufacture either.

I mean no offense to anybody else in this thread, but Autonerd’s reply has been the single most helpful reply I’ve ever gotten. I’m really excited to actually get started developing film. It has a certain indelible quality that digital, as much as I love it, cannot reproduce. Any insider or “old guy” tips are most welcome, and I see I’ve gotten some already. Stuff like “use this developer but leave the film in for X-minutes longer”.

Clickclick’s suggestion was the one that worked. I put it on my k3, kept pressing the shutter release, and after 30 seconds it “woke up”. Thanks all for the suggestions.

I got a K-1 for Christmas after pining over one for years. Of the 20-ish shots I’ve taken I’m quite impressed. However some things I can do on the K-3 I can’t seem to find on the K-1. For example I’d like to specify where the AF focuses like on my k3, but I’m unsure of where it is/what it’s labeled as.
This camera is so overwhelming (in a good way) that if you’ve got any tips/tricks I’m all ears.

I finally got the first part allowing me to develop 35mm film, and if you give a mouse a cookie, I want to start shooting analogue medium format. I’ve wanted to for a long time, but finally having the means to see the final product is a huge plus. My question is I’m torn between the 645 and the 67. I know they’re in the same umbrella of “medium”, but they’re two beasts entirely. Please feel free to add, comment to, or correct my thinking on both cameras.
I’m leaning toward the 645 (the 645N to be specific), for a few reasons: one I like the film back concept. I like the similarities between the 645 mount lenses and K-mount, in that I can use the older lenses on a newer body. Eventually I would like to get the D or Z, so this is a big plus. I’m a little concerned that the ergonomics aren’t entirely the best.
I haven’t exactly considered a 67 or 67ii, but it’s not entirely off the table. The used market is still kind of pricy, but I get it, they’re insane cameras. The fact that there isn’t a digital version of the 67 mount kind of makes me shy away from it. However, I like the larger image size that this camera takes. The other feature I really like is the interchangeable viewfinder(s). I also kind of like the similarity the 67 shares with an SLR.
What are these cameras like in the real world?

Good news/bad news. Good news. The guy took $40. The bad: it’s almost entirely 120/medium format stuff. I tried asking questions, but he knew nothing about it. ---------- Post added 11-17-19 at 10:27 AM ---------- I did get a photo lab index which is definitely going to come in handy.

It’s a very simple question: what (Pentax) manual focus lenses would you never want to be without? Part of this is to get some ideas of lenses to look out for, and also I’m simply curious.
Allow me to start:
SMC Super Takumar 200mm/3.5. Although I don’t use this lens on the reg, nor is it always in my bag, but the images it produces have a je ne sais quoi about them. The bokeh is fantastic, the subject is always sharp I would never part with my 200.

With the new APS-C “flagship” or whatever this new camera turns out to be, it seems a lot of people are kind of disappointed (even though there’s minimal technical information on it). I was fidgeting with a K1000 I’m getting ready to sell, and I started looking it over. It’d be a tight fit, but why can’t Ricoh develop a K-mount mirrorless camera with the form of getting people interested in Pentax again? Think about it: mirrorless is all the rage right now. You build a quality but cheap (price point) mirrorless body that does one thing and one thing only: take pictures. This is where my manufacturing and technical ignorance comes in, but the only thing that would need to be built from scratch would be the sensor. They could keep costs down by raiding the old parts bin. Just a thought.
For clarification, I’m not one of those people who’re chomping at the bit for mirrorless. I just think a new K1000-esque camera could bring people back to the system, and bring people for the first time.

This may be a bit of a long post, and none of it ought to be misconstrued to me bashing or hating on other camera companies. Here we go:
Today, I stopped at my local BestBuy for a couple of MicroSD cards, and decided to mess around with their DSLR/Mirrorless selection. Naturally, I was drawn to the Sony A7III. Frankly, if I wasn't saving for a K-1 and invested in Pentax lenses, I'd probably flip to Sony, but that's a different discussion for a different day. Honestly, I was very impressed with both the A7III and even the A7II. It felt like a Pentax. The dials were a little sunken in for my taste, but I could reach everything I could want fairly easily. Then I moved to Canon and Nikon...
I feel because this is the Pentax forum and not the Canon or Nikon forum this is safe to say, but, what the hell is the draw?! Their FF-cameras have extremely impressive technical specs, but Holy *bleep* do the ergonomics suck! I played with the EOS 5D MkIV, and I couldn't put that fat beast down fast enough. Then I played with the new EOS mirrorless camera. It was better, but still lacked any modicum of comfortability. Now, I have pretty big hands, but my K7 or K3 with the grip felt a million times better in my hand. I've also played with a K1 and it feels like an extension of my hand. Sometimes I'll be sitting around and grab my camera and just hold it (no, for real, I do this. The lens cap doesn't even come off. I just hold it) because it just fits.
Please keep this discussion as civil as possible(?)

I have a feeling for some (not all) who do own Leica, it's an accessory to them. "look at me, I'm a photographer. I can afford a Leica, so I must be serious. Follow me on Instagram at blahblahblahI'msodeepandinteresting."

Disclaimer: This is meant to be taken as humorous (or is it)
Do Leica cameras exist or are they just a fabrication? I've never seen a Leica in the wild, nor have I seen their lenses. No rangefinders. No rebadged Pannasonic DSLR's but sold with a Red Dot. No nothing. Every time I see someone with a camera, I sneak a peek, and it's always Nikon or Canon. Occasionally I see Fuji, Sony, or any of the other gambit of cameras. Hell, I see Pentaxes (Pentaxi?) significantly more frequently than these supposed "Red Dot" cameras.
Now bear with me, as I may sound crazy: I don't think Leica exists. I think people pay thousands of dollars to say they own a Leica, but don't actually have one. It's like a perverse club where everyone says they have one, other people think they have one, but nobody actually has one because Leica. Doesn't. Exist.
The only evidence to the contrary is from my Grandfather who said he always regretted not buying a "Leica" when he was stationed in Germany in the mid-50's. For all I know, the company referred to as "Leica" could have been taking servicemen's paychecks and handing them a card saying "you're now allowed to say you own a camera that can take a photograph of God him/her/itself. — Leica"

Too late, my friend. You may have stumbled upon Australia's biggest secret:
Step 1. Buy up all the Leica's.
Step 2. Tell foreigners that 97% of their wildlife will kill them, so they don't have to share their cameras.
Step 3. ???
Step 4. Profit!
