i'm trying to proof that 6 mpx is enough for portrait photography

I shoot some H.S. events. Sometimes I need to do head & shoulder work. I will still use my Pentax istD body. Over 10+ years of doing this I have never had any complaints. People have mentioned how the new sensors will have better D.R. if you can controls your lighting there is no need to worry about D.R. 8x10 are the largest prints I offer at these events and 6mp is fine for this size of print. When doing these events I offer overnight turnaround (most events are Fri.-Sun & photos are taken on Fri./Sat.) by using the istD 6mb it makes processing lightning fast.
The main draw back with 6mb is its limits to be able to be blown up for very large prints/poster & billboards. Its also not good for pixel peeking 😊

When not to take a photo

Yes it is a personal question!!!!!
My opinion is if the reason for you taking the photo is "PURE" than it would be OK, but if its for "UN PURE" reasons than it is not. You will be the one that ultimately makes that determination. Your decision tells us a lot about your character👍

Good luck with the experiment!
I have tried to move away from the DSLR as a travel camera but I don't like the feel & experience of using a non DSLR body. The K3II and most of the Pentax body's are so small and compact they are easy to pack. With use of the LTD lenses you end up with a Fantasticks combo. I'm going to add a 20-40 LTD to my collection which will be my main lens (i love the fact that the 20-40 Ltd is WR & still compact) and coupled with my 70 LTD I will have a great travel setup. (Only down side is neither of the lenses are that fast)

Thanks Sandy

My wife doesn't know that the lenses are interchangeable she thinks that when you put them on a camera body they must STAY there. That's how you justify getting a new camera. 😉 so if I get the 20-40 ltd I will need a new body to put it on, might try the KP.........SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE A GREAT COMBO for a have on you all the time setup

20-40 LTD
I do not own one and am VERY curious about it. It seams like it would be a perfect fit on an APSc body. Paired with a Pentax WR body you should have the perfect outdoor all weather combo. Does it just not excite people?

If you use LV to help get the proper exposure make sure you have the LCD screen adjusted properly. If its turned up you'll get under exposed, turned down you'll get over exposed. (In LV do you have an active histogram?)

Does a higher ISO bring out details in the shadows in a properly exposed photo.

OK I should know this but I don't. (I sure hope this thread doesn't go the same as the last one that I started 😉 )

I'm shooting American stile football. The lighting is overcast but not dark so I have lots of options. My question is NOT what SS & F: setting to use 😁 but I'm sure I'll get some suggestions 😀.

The kids faces are normally shadowed by there helmets
My question is when you push the ISO up and make the appropriate adjustments with the shutter speed to obtain proper overall exposure it appears this helps bring UP the exposure in the shadows but keeps highlights in check
(I normally keep the aperture open to help with isolation)
Is this correct????
I know that higher ISO brings in noise so there is a trade off, but being able to see little Johnny's face under his helmet clearly trumps that. (No pun intended)
I will be shooting baseball this spring and will incounter the same problems with the caps.

DAMB you!!! I need to add a longer/faster telephoto to my sports gear before HS football playoffs start.
You have a crazy good price on the 20-40ltd and that is the #1 lens I want to add to my Pentax gear. WR is a must this time of year in the Pacific NW.
Good luck on your sales!!!

I agree with Steve about the lens! The lens will get you by but will never be called "tack sharp"
You can help it out in post or bump up the sharpening/contrast in camera (if shooting jpeg). In the photo with the ball, the ball looks good (probable close to its apex point) but the foot looks a little soft. I think this could be caused by motion blur from the foot. Even though you shot it with a moderate SS it was not enough to freeze the motion completely.

I am not able to see the other photo you refuted to but if it was shot with the same lens you can probably expect simulate results on sharpness even at the lens's best f: stop

Best of luck!!!

PS. I would say looking at photos on your 24+ monitors or zooming in on your handheld devices can created a lot of anxiety over sharpness. I suffer from the pixel peeking syndrome myself 😢

So what your saying is as the OP in my original question I just miss spoke (used the wrong term) when I used the term "EQUIVALENT EXPOSURE" I should of said "get the same exposure"?
The term " EQUIVALENT EXPOSURE" refers to exposure (SS, ISO & F:stop) + FOV?

Just a couple of times Steve, I decided to move onto beer & pretzel's 😉

---------- Post added 08-23-19 at 11:12 PM ----------

Just made a big order from Amazon for pretzel's you need me to send some over Dave?

What have I learned today??
#01: Gub thinks the truck is more useful

#02: Dartmore Dave Really can blow my mind (great printer / megapixel factoid)

#03: Dartmore Dave might be on mushrooms, he's seeing fast moving elves painting.

#04: Gub might of got into Dartmore's Daves stash, he's seeing elves with tap measures.

#05: Make sure you stock up on snacks & beverages before you ask a question 😉

But sure they are just shoot in crop mode. OK I'm just funnin about the crop thing.
But as you, I think I'll do a little research into them as most of my Pentax lenses are FF and I'm using aps-c body's. "Knowledge Is Power" is what the bumper sticker said.

VERY interesting indeed. I had to run to the store to pick more popcorn up. 😀

As there are people on this forum that are "WAY" smarter than and yes my original question has been fully answered and I thank you!!!
I have kept up on the thread and I have been amazed that this one item has not been brought up.

My heading was: Lens Light - Gathering Abilities

Does not a lens have a maximum opening? This opening would only allow in a maximum amount of light. Yes deferent sizes of sensor's can absorbs deferent amounts of light from the same lens but the exact same amount of light passes through the aperture???

The one item that I have not seen brought up is:
Is it a lens designed for a aps-c or is it a lens designed for a FF?
The FF lens would allow in "MORE" light than a lens designed for a aps-c sensor so wouldn't it technically have better light gathering capability. 😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈
NO NEED TO ANSWER! I WAS JUST AMAZED IT NEVER GOT BROUGHT UP

WOW I think I went down a rabbit hole 😱
As the OP I take full responsibility. But I'm all clear now (as clear as my old brain will ever be)

My heading: Lens Light - Gathering Abilities

My take - A fast lens is a fast lens regardless of what size of sensor you are using.

My question: I use a light meter and it says shoot the scene @ f2.4 Would I get approximately the same expo with a FF & APS-C body? Or would I need to open up to f:2 or f:1.8 on the APS-C to get the equivalent exposure as on a FF.

My take - The "LENS" allows in exactly the same amount of light, regardless of the size of sensor. This light is captured in various degrees based on the size of the sensors but it exposes each pixel exactly the same (Yes I probably shouldn't of said "exactly") from 4/3, APS-C to FF

Summery: My Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art DC HSM on my Pentax K3II is faster than his Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM on his Canon 5D IV (if the light meter says shoot it at ISO 100, SS 1/100 @ F:1.8 I can do it as said, he has to make the proper adjustment's)
Yes I have experienced that some lenses shoot faster/slower than there advertised speeds 😈
