i'm trying to proof that 6 mpx is enough for portrait photography

I shoot some H.S. events. Sometimes I need to do head & shoulder work. I will still use my Pentax istD body. Over 10+ years of doing this I have never had any complaints. People have mentioned how the new sensors will have better D.R. if you can controls your lighting there is no need to worry about D.R. 8x10 are the largest prints I offer at these events and 6mp is fine for this size of print. When doing these events I offer overnight turnaround (most events are Fri.-Sun & photos are taken on Fri./Sat.) by using the istD 6mb it makes processing lightning fast.
The main draw back with 6mb is its limits to be able to be blown up for very large prints/poster & billboards. Its also not good for pixel peeking 😊

When not to take a photo

Yes it is a personal question!!!!!
My opinion is if the reason for you taking the photo is "PURE" than it would be OK, but if its for "UN PURE" reasons than it is not. You will be the one that ultimately makes that determination. Your decision tells us a lot about your character👍

Thanks Sandy

My wife doesn't know that the lenses are interchangeable she thinks that when you put them on a camera body they must STAY there. That's how you justify getting a new camera. 😉 so if I get the 20-40 ltd I will need a new body to put it on, might try the KP.........SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE A GREAT COMBO for a have on you all the time setup

As there are people on this forum that are "WAY" smarter than and yes my original question has been fully answered and I thank you!!!
I have kept up on the thread and I have been amazed that this one item has not been brought up.

My heading was: Lens Light - Gathering Abilities

Does not a lens have a maximum opening? This opening would only allow in a maximum amount of light. Yes deferent sizes of sensor's can absorbs deferent amounts of light from the same lens but the exact same amount of light passes through the aperture???

The one item that I have not seen brought up is:
Is it a lens designed for a aps-c or is it a lens designed for a FF?
The FF lens would allow in "MORE" light than a lens designed for a aps-c sensor so wouldn't it technically have better light gathering capability. 😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈
NO NEED TO ANSWER! I WAS JUST AMAZED IT NEVER GOT BROUGHT UP

WOW I think I went down a rabbit hole 😱
As the OP I take full responsibility. But I'm all clear now (as clear as my old brain will ever be)

My heading: Lens Light - Gathering Abilities

My take - A fast lens is a fast lens regardless of what size of sensor you are using.

My question: I use a light meter and it says shoot the scene @ f2.4 Would I get approximately the same expo with a FF & APS-C body? Or would I need to open up to f:2 or f:1.8 on the APS-C to get the equivalent exposure as on a FF.

My take - The "LENS" allows in exactly the same amount of light, regardless of the size of sensor. This light is captured in various degrees based on the size of the sensors but it exposes each pixel exactly the same (Yes I probably shouldn't of said "exactly") from 4/3, APS-C to FF

Summery: My Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art DC HSM on my Pentax K3II is faster than his Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM on his Canon 5D IV (if the light meter says shoot it at ISO 100, SS 1/100 @ F:1.8 I can do it as said, he has to make the proper adjustment's)
Yes I have experienced that some lenses shoot faster/slower than there advertised speeds 😈

Awesome input from all you Pentaxians
YOU HAVE JUST WON ME A COLD DRINK OF MY CHOICE!!!!
I think I have a firm grasp in how the x1.5 magnification works on the affective focus range & how it affects the DOF.
My buddy has been debating me saying that his Canon 24-70 2.8L is just as fast on his FF camera as my Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art is on my K3II. I had thought not, but didn't have the information to back it up until now.
Nothing quit like a drink at your best friends (over 40 years) expense!!!

My experience is "ALWAYS, ALWAYS" buy OEM batteries & battery grips. I have found "NO" comparison between OEM & third party parts when it comes to powering your camera. (AC adapters excluded)

Absolutely love your pan with the FA 77ltd would be nice to compare it with the 70ltd side by side

The DA* 55 does check a lot of boxes Distortion, IQ, WS and throw in f:1.4
I would think it makes a great portrait lens as well.

---------- Post added 08-14-19 at 12:09 AM ----------

I am also concerned with the larger volume of photos that would need to be stitched with use of a 55mm lens

AWESOME was this shot with an aps-c body. By using the FA43 and using more frames the resolution is outstanding. This technique would result in an image approaching a medium format photo👌

I made the move from my ist D to a K3II a couple of years ago. The ist D AF/MF switch went out but other than that it was still working like a charm. After setting for a year I pulled it out to take to the golf course the other day. Still shoots like new

Getting the eyes razor sharp shooting wide open (the kicker, subject wears glasses)

I've always struggled with this. When your nice & tight to the subject shooting larger than f2 the DOF is so narrow that even the distance from the glasses to the eyes produce soft eyes and it is hard to lock onto the eyes. (I know you can switch to Manuel focus but with my eye sight I'd be lucky to get anything in focus at f:11) My technique is to focus and get a lock then slightly lean forward, its not perfect but I get a lot more keepers.
I've read that some people adjust the micro adjustment in camera to make the lens back focus so focusing on the nose will nail the focus on the eyes.

What are your techniques

Looking forward to all of your suggestions

Just started looking at photos from a recent vacation (November 30, 2018) I always let my vacation photos age like fine wine. Then when I look at them I always feel like "DAMB THAT'S NOT HALF BAD"
This is straight out of camera (Down sized to transfer to tablet from camera). I'll update the metadata when I get a chance to look it up on my CP.

Love to hear your opinions, I'm going to get a print on acrylic so any suggestions on the final crop 🔪?????

Very true I might play around with that

Has anyone ever tried setting the micro adjustment to back focus so you can focus on the tip if the nose and if so, how does it work out?

Thanks for all the comments

My suggestion is don't forget anything and take as much backup equipment as posable. By taking backups your guaranteed not to need it. 😉
Good luck and looking toward to seeing samples

What lens for this shot?
Posted By Photobill

Thanks all for the input!!! I have decided to go with a fast 135mm. This will get the camera about 50ft down the lane (lane is 60ft long) keeping it out of the bowlers line of site. I have decided that I can't get enough OOF to conceal whats in the background without moving the equipment way to close to the subject.
On the second photo I used a speed light mounted to the camera just for test purposes (testing lens focal length)
I have started experimenting with soft boxes placed on each side of the bowler with honeycomb grids. This is helping with the background clutter.

The ambient lighting in bowling centers make it impossible to get a photo that will freeze the action without using flash. At the release point of some bowlers there ball will be traveling 30+mph and the arm would be every bit as fast. (Note in the first photo WITH flash there was still motion blur on the subjects hand)

I will post more photos when I get it dialled in a little more.
Thanks

Bravo on your processing. But the crop was perfect!! Now the photo truly has a spot your eyes are drawn to. With your crop the center subject looks like he's doubled in size and is jumping out as the focus point

K-1 with FA lenses.

I do not own a K-1 so I could be wrong.
Set the camera to the "FULL" auto mode. Then try and focus with the shutter button. In this mode your shutter button should activate the focus motor. If it does than you will know that the lens is focusing properly. Then switch the camera to av mode and press the shutter button 1/2 way. If the focus motor does not respond than you probably have the back button focus activated and the shutter button focus disabled. They can be configured in your settings
Hope this might help!!
