Talk Me Out Of Jumping Ship From Pentax After 45 Years...

If Sony does what you need it to do and you have the money to switch, by all means go for it. The company seems to be doing a good job with their camera offerings.

If I had the cash I would personally buy a Leica Q2 or the Q3...but I don't have that kind of cash. I had a Ricoh GRIII that I just ebayed off because I could not really get along well with the user interface and just found the controls too small. I wound up never really using it. Pentax does a good job of allowing me to use manual controls in their slrs and dslrs and their lenses (prime dx lenses) are small and totally useable as a walk around camera even though they are bigger than something like a Fuji whatever they got now or some other mirrorless stuff. I also do not really care for EVFs. I don't mind chimping on a good screen, but EVFs and I don't get along very well.

I have a butt load of pentax glass, mostly manual focus stuff from the film era, that is still pretty excellent on my K5iis too. I don't ever really want to be without a camera that can use those lenses easily.

Pentax Is Back –The New King Of BLACK

Leica has been killing it the last decade or so. I honestly think their control layout is the best in the business and should be copied by other manufacturers including Pentax. Shots from a lot of the photographers using them are pretty great too.
Leica Q and SL2 have shake reduction and the Q has weather sealing, autofocus also. The new Q has a flip screen even.

The whole idea of the M is to be the best at the basics, and the company really nails it with the M series of cameras. I shot a couple of M6ttl cameras back in the film days and I was often delighted in the image quality and the user interface and just the process of using the camera was quite a lot of fun too. It's the age old rangefinder vs slr argument that has been going on since probably the 50's.

Leica is too expensive for my blood now though. I just ordered a KIII mono to so I'm not opposed to spending money either. Pentax knows how to make a dslr that isn't completely confusing to operate which is nice, but I think they jam way too many "features" into a camera that I will never need, never use, and forget how to if I ever learned how to begin with. If Leica was selling for 1/3 of the price they do I would be shooting Leica instead. They are too expensive for me though. I get why they are popular though.

If Ricoh/Pentax made a camera just a little bigger than the GRIII with a dedicated dial for shutter speed, a dedicated dial for iso, and a real aperture ring and manual focus ring using the same sensor and lens they stick in the camera now, they couldn't make enough of them to satisfy demand IMHO.

What's The "Best Bargain" In Used Pentax APS-C DSLR Bodies?

I bought a K5sII from this site and I think I got quite the bargain. I really like the camera and the way it handles colors. Great build quality too. Seem to be cheap used too.

Best prime between focal lengths 31mm and 43mm?

An always on prime from the early film era of pentax cameras would be, for me, the SMC 35mm f2 or the SMC 50mm f 1.4. I much prefer a 50 over a 35mm though, so I would probably go with the f1.4. I'd run a M version of the 50mm f1.4 too.

I think the image quality of the SMC 35mm f3.5 is better than the f 2, and it is a smaller lens. Very nice for color photography. It is slower and the viewfinder can get a little too dark for my aging eyes though.

Opinion time: what are your favorite manual lenses?

K 28 f3.5 and the K 35 f 3.5 are a couple of my favorites when shooting Kodak Portra 160 or 400. They do a pretty bang up job on my K 5IIs too.

I really like the M 135 f3.5 quite a bit. It's a great small size, has a built in hood, and I really like the image quality.

And I don't own it anymore, but I thought the 77mm f1.8 limited was very special. I had that back in the day and loved it when shooting film, especially black and white.

K 50 f1.4. I don't know why, but I always have this lens in my bag. I love it.

yeah, I'd say I like the K2 more than the MX and KX just for the feel of the camera body and viewfinder and I think the shutter dial is easier to move. I tend to shoot using a handheld meter most times so I don't get too bent out of shape for the ISO ring being fiddly...and it is. Mine has been set to Iso 400 since I can remember.

I just found my Olympus Stylus Epic with a 35mm f2.8 lens in the closet the other day...I haven't seen that camera in years and it even had film in it. I put a new battery in and fired off the remaining film and the camera works like new.

I always liked using that camera and took it all over the place, got several rolls from my honeymoon and various vacations that are real treasures. It really works well and is easy to one hand itself and the pictures I get from it are really quite nice. Apparently they command high prices now which has me thinking I should sell it on ebay since I have other stuff to buy and the phone has taken over my point and shoot selfie/fixed focal length photography.

What's the highest rated lens you own according to PF?

I guess my highest rated lens is my SMC 28mm f3.5 which rates in at 9.41

It's a nice lens, but I also really like the M 28mm f3.5 which renders differently.

Next up would be the SMC 35mm f2 and SMC 135mm f2.5 both of which are rated at 9.31

I don't dig these lenses as much as others and have been thinking about selling them. They are very good lenses, but the focal lengths don't agree with me. I'm more of a 28mm, 50mm 100mm kind of shooter.

I was actually showing a friend some tips on photography when he first got his digital canon, which was his first camera. I was telling him I still shot film primarily and he asked me how I knew what I was getting if I couldn't review it right then. I just told him it was all part of the experience.

For me it is as much about the process as the final image. Photography is a hobby for me, and if the process isn't enjoyable I wouldn't do it.
