Looks like you have the excellent AE Prism Finder which has a user adjustable viewfinder diopter with a range of -2.5 to +1.5 -- perhaps this might be not set up for your shooting/focusing eye? As others have mentioned that screen is excellent as is the (bright) pentaprism in the finder.

I would compare the focusing screens side by side. I bought two off brand split image screens and compared it to my Pentax AB-82 split image and the off brand is much thinner. ---------- Post added 03-03-2022 at 10:14 PM ---------- Also, having some variation from one adapter to another should not matter I would think. It would be like having different width/thickness extension tubes - it matters little if it is a 12mm or 20mm or whatever mm width - the focus confirmation and focusing should work.

offering a related data point of a successful, crowd-funded medium format lens - http://ivanichek.com/Medium%20format%20Petzvar%20Petzval%20lens.htm
I do realize that: this is not a wide angle lens; this is not a native Pentax 645 mount; he did not use highly corrected lens elements; this not exactly what you might be thinking of/wishing for etc.

barondla,
Pentax did make a split image focusing screen for the 645N - it is the AB-82 - and it works quite well.

for my 645N it would be the FA 75mm f/2.8 and the FA 150mm f/2.8 although the FA 200mm f/4 is very nice

what is the filter diameter? I have an Arsat 300mm f/2.8 in a Nikon mount that has a series of rear mount filters it came with and now curious if they are compatible.

While it may not be a filter wheel, the FA 150mm f/2.8 hood has a piece that slides out to give access to the filter (so you can turn it). I think the FA 35mm has this feature too (I sold my copy) as does the FA 45-85mm f/4.5

Sorry, I don't think there is a plethora of defective ones coming from Japan - only that folks that have bought one from there (and shipped to US) that just happened to be defective and stated they did not want the bother of having to return it or the seller offered to help pay for repairs.
I've had generally very good experience with buying from Japan eBay sellers and the few instances where something was not right, I was able to work with the sellers to fix it to my satisfaction. The ratings seemed to have changed over the last few years and become somewhat ambiguous -- but when reading carefully through the descriptions and looking closely at images and asking clarifying questions I am finding what I want (regardless of it being listed as EXC or EXC+++ or whatever they mark it as the key is in the descriptions as their EXC rating is not matching with EXC ratings from a well established seller like KEH.com). ---------- Post added 11-21-2019 at 09:05 PM ---------- One thing that does come up somewhat often are the shutter speed dial being broken off and then re-glued back on. I would ask about the history of the dials as that is one thing that I have seen and heard most with 645N / 645NII bodies coming from Japan. Not an epidemic, but if there is one thing to look for and ask questions about I would point to the shutter speed dial. The other dial seems much, much less problematic.

I have a bit of experience with the 645N II and about ten years with the 645N. I have shot with the same 645N body for a little over ten years now in a variety of conditions - Andes, Amazon and the Catskill Mountains (in the dead of winter) and it just keeps on working. There are a lot of wedding photographers who are jumping on the 645/645N/645NII wagon and some have experienced issues with their bodies (e.g. buying a defective one from Japan or dropping their body) and seem to have been able to get them repaired. One repair shop that I have sent others to for their 645N/645NII issues is Bill Moretz (About Bill Moretz ? ProCamera) who is an amazingly capable technician and really good photographer too.

If you have an opportunity to handle these, ideally both together (645/645N versus 6x7/67/67II) I would highly recommend it. I went down a path of trying out different medium format camera systems many years ago and while owning a few different systems over the years, I find that I use my 645N the most and it has stayed with me for over ten years now. I still have some of the other systems including Pentax 67, but find that for how I like to shoot, what I shoot, what I like to hold and look through and change settings on, the 645N fits my particular set of needs and likes best. In my opinion, the most complete and versatile system is the Fuji GX680 (viewfinders, interchangeable backs, lenses and more lenses, front standard tilts and shifts etc.), but it is big and heavy and I still find that I reach for me 645N more.

Hi JayH,
My paperweights use the Fuji films. And yes the impossible project makes some emulsions that will fit as well. So in addition to being effective paperweights, they also accept a number of peel apart films and work quite well.
I also have a cool Pentax FA 33-55mm that makes an interesting paperweight, especially with the lens hood and attached to a 'film is dead' 645N body. Does not get as much attention as the monstrous Nikon 200-400mm f/4 VR paperweight, but I rarely have need for such a large paperweight, but when I need to hold down some 16x20 sheets of paper in a mild tropical storm, I am all set.

Aeros,
This is troubling - Pentax Canada not able to support a product sold by them. Perhaps it might be worthwhile into researching product support laws in Canada? In the USA there is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which is federal and seems to cover products that cost t least $25 and come with a written warranty. This would apply to the SDM failure, which appears to be an issue with Pentax lenses. It might also be worthwhile to contact Service Alberta: to see what your options are.
I share some of your frustration with 645 lens repairs... Here in the US I am less than pleased with support with Pentax products. Specifically with some of the 645 items I have had serviced. Lenses sitting at Pentax USA's repair facility (when it was in Colorado) for more than a month, waiting for a part. Lenses sitting at CRIS in AZ also waiting for parts. It seems to stem from Pentax USA and their parts department in my experiences. They just don't stock the things I have needed for FA 645 lenses and need to order them from Japan. I think in one instance I grew so frustrated with the wait time, that I had the lens sent back to me, found an exploded diagram of the lens, ordered the part from a supplier in Japan and sent off the lens, new part to an independent repair facility (took place years ago, so forgot the frustrating details).

A Fuji GX 680 might be an inbetween option. A Fuji GX 680 body and film back is quite a bit bigger than my Pentax 6x7 body, but start adding lenses and it gets closer, although the GX 680 is still significantly bigger overall. The Fuji GX 680 is somewhat smaller than my Speed Graphic with its bellows extended, but heavier.
The right angle finder and ability to tilt and shift is a great feature of the GX 680 (the "s" versions do not offer tilt shift from what I understand).
