I've used a 2E filter to reduce secondary spectrum in longer lenses that exhibit
this problem in film astrophotography. The short answer is that it works. You have to take into account the spectral sensitivity of the film or sensor to ultraviolet light and whether or not such a filter would benefit. A 2E filter completely cuts UV light, where a 2B or 2A have a lesser effect. As with all ideas, try it!

Jupiter is the "star" in question. Significantly brighter than the other point sources. This contributes to the effect.

My K-5IIs still amazes me. Always does a great job in the most beautiful locations. I can trust it to do me right.

Using my 67 glass for this one. Just got the adapter yesterday. Love the bokeh and zero light fall-off in the corners.
Shot with the K-01 and SMC 67 105/2.4 @ 2.4. The Pentax 67 glass is just as sharp as 35mm from what I can tell. The 105mm has just a very slight tinge of CA wide open. Easily managed even on a cropped sensor. Morning Dew by Nightfly Photography, on Flickr

The horizon is all fire from our Sun, and the rocks are illuminated by our Moon.
Overlooking Frenchmans Bay from Schoodic Point. Cadillac mountain is the highest point on Mount Desert Island and tallest mountain on the eastern seaboard north of Rio de Jeneiro.
I had not worked with E100G before and this was my one shot of this composition. Glad my instincts were working.

Back to the photos.
Taken in late April when the summer Milky Way is in the early morning sky. Captured during the work week no less. Pentax 67 with 165 f/2.8 @ f/4.8 and Kodak E200 transparency pushed +1.5 stops. Exposure was 35 minutes under the dark skies of my home in East Sullivan, Maine. Tracking was done with an equatorial mounted telescope with camera mounted piggyback.
This image features the Milky Way of Sagittarius and southern Ophiuchus. The star clouds in the region are the best in the sky and are plainly visible to the unaided eye. Dark skies are a must to accomplish such a photograph without expensive filters. The prowess of film photography is still there, it just has to be harnessed.
Thanks for looking. Nightfly Photography |

It was clouded here during the eclipse, but I did get a good image of the Moon Monday night.
I used my 8" SCT @ F/6.3 and the K-5 IIs 1/750 second @ ISO 160. Post processed in PS to enhance contrast and detail. I'm generally pleased with it. The 30 year old optic did well. Moon 10-6-14 by Nightfly Photographic, on Flickr

A shot with the K-5 IIs and 16mm f/2 Samy @ f/3.2 and 92 seconds at ISO 3200. A bit over-processed, but I was pulling out some decent details from the raw file. Milky Way - Detailed by Nightfly Photographic, on Flickr

Not being familiar with the 8-16, I cannot comment other than to say a prime is generally better corrected and in this case also faster. DXOMark ranked it highly.
It is rather sharp wide open but vignetting can be a bother. At f/2.2 the vignette is tolerable and can be corrected in post, by f/2.8 it is virtually gone.
Focus is internal and it takes 77mm filters. Build quality is also very nice.

I am interested in the O-GPS1 and hope to try one soon. That will make travel easier. I have been using an equatorially mounted telescope attached to a permanent pier. The camera rides "piggyback".
You can take a virtual tour of my roll off roof observatory here, the telescope, and the variety of cameras used. https://www.flickr.com/photos/12598495@N08/sets/72157626760790621/
Taking images of the Milky Way from my home observatory lacks the variety of the scenic landscapes so often sought by photographers. For me, it is has always been about the Milky Way. But, I would like to try the O-GPS1 and move about.

Love my 16/2 Samyang. My first copy exhibited decentering, returned for another copy and it was good with performance on par with reviews. Some coma in the corners, but a very nice option, especially as prices have fallen. You can view my photostream on Flickr for more work with this lens.

The recent "Supermoon" at Acadia National Park, Maine
I used my Pentax 6X7 400MM f/4 SMC Takumar @ f/8 which did surprisingly well with the high contrast Moon. The lens is plenty sharp on a cropped sensor, but contrast can be a challenge in difficult lighting. Blueberry Moon by Nightfly Photographic, on Flickr

I'l seeing lots of nice work on these pages. The K-5 holds its own in the canikon world with the competent photographer.
I'd like to do more traveling once I get a 0-GPS1, but here is my front yard where I have a permanently mounted equatorial. Airglow was pretty intense the morning of the flopped Camelopardalids. Signs of Life
The Maine Woods. Spring is in the air. With our eyes starved of green after a long winter, dig in! Walking in the woods with my K-5 and SMC 67 105MM f/2.4. Medium format lenses good enough for cropped sensor digital? I think so. Signs of Life by Nightfly Photographic, on Flickr

One advantage of the ultra fast Samyang 16mm F/2 is its almost stop action capabilities in the dark. Sharpness and vignetting are well controlled in this full aperture test in deep twilight. Eight seconds at f/2 using ISO 2000. Visually, the sky was much darker than seen here. My copy seems sharpest from f/2 through f/4 and very good from f/5.6 to f/8. Uniform sharpness is great by f/4. True infinity is right on the mark and was set manually for this shot. Night Contrail by Nightfly Photographic, on Flickr
