645n TTL Flash, 2024 knowledge base

You may consider using GODOX flashes like the V1-P (76 Ws), or any of their more powerfull flashes piloted wirelessly through their radio transmitter (TTL/AUTO or MANUAL modes).
You may also use QUANTUM QFLASH (T or X series) with QF17 shoe.
If TTL is not absolutely necessary, you may also consider the hammer fllashes in AUTO mode like the VIVITAR 365 flash (200 joules) or NATIONAL PE5650 which are sometimes available on eBay, or even a BRAUN 900 or 910 (150 joules)
With these last 3 flashes, you need to incorporate a tension isolator between the synchro of the flash and the camera.

---------- Post added 02-06-24 at 05:14 PM ----------

here a article I've made (in french) in order to make his own electric tension isolator

---------- Post added 02-06-24 at 05:18 PM ----------

I have already tried 3x to upload the article, but it do not appear in my answer ?

It is so easy to use a secure-flash-system between the flash and the camera.
Look at the PDF I had made some times ago (in french)

Personnaly, I use the ROTACAM handle sold by Mamiya for their 645 AF/AFD/... bodies
It permits an easy rotation of the camera for shooting in the horizontal or vertical way
It seems like a heavy CUSTOM BRACKETS holder...it had perhaps been produced by this factory ?

I use a CamFi Pro Plus transmitter.
Through the program delivered with this transmitter, all the orders which are sent to the camera through USB are redirected to the WiFi adapter on your PC.
The Transmitter received them and send them to your Pentax 645Z.
The reverse is also thrue : the captured image is sent through Camfi Pro Plus to the Wifi adapter of your computer. The delivered program redirect the data to the USB port .... and lightroom received the image

--> no more cable needed between your camera and your computer. Moreover, it works with lightroom, capture one, pentax Image Transmitter II, DigiCamControl etc ... and is usable with recent camera capable (I use it with Nikon D850, Canon EOS 6D, Pentax 645Z and FUJI GX50S)

It takes 10 seconds maximum to receive a image from the camera to lightroom throug this system.

Your computer must be equipped with a wifi transmitter capable of working at high speed 1.200 ou 1.900 Mbit/s. I use a USB WIFI KEY from NETGEAR (model A6210 -only windows supported- or A7000 -win and mac supported-).
Generally, the laptop computer have a integrated wifi adapter with is only capable of 300 Mbits/s.

Talking 645Z

I use both 645Z and GFX50S.

Some details which could make a difference ............

Prices of lenses
----------------
GFX50S is lighter, but all the lenses are new ones and are to pay at the price of the new gear.
645Z lenses could be found in second hand shop at very low prices. Most of my P645Z lenses come from Japan, and even with shipping cost and duties taxes, they are still more affordable compared to the european prices.

Viewer
------
I prefer to use the viewer than the screen

GFX50S : electronic viewer
There is always a short delay between the moment when you put you eye through the ocular and the moment when you can visualize the framing of your picture.
When there is not a lot of light, the electronic viewer of the GFX50S become coarse grained and it's difficult to manually focus the lens ... you need to accept what the autofocus propose
possibility to observe an increased part of the picture

Possibility to place other branded lenses through adapters ... but you loose autofocus and automatic aperture control ..... not very professionnal, even if only used in the studio.
Could be used as a digital back on a small view camera (with minimum a 70 or 80mm lense if infinity has to bee reached).

P645Z : optical viewer
No delay for framing
Framed picture is much brighter so that manual focusing is still usable in low light situation.
No possibility of increasing a part of the picture through the viewer .... only on the screen.
Could also be used as a digital back, but with more difficulities and longer focal length (distance between lens and sensor is much greater)

Autofocus
---------

The autofocus of P645Z lenses is very slow compared to the GFX50S lenses.
Last lenses incoporate a focusing motor, but the big part of the available lenses still use a mechancial focusing system through the motor incorporated in the body
None lenses have a anti-vibrating system

The autofocus of GFX lenses are ultra fast. Each lens incorporate his own adapted system.
Some lenses incorporate a anti vibrating system
Moreover the body of the GFX100 incorporate an anti-vibration system

Quality of pictures
-------------------
Same sensor 33x44mm
Same quality of pictures
the size of the RAW pictures issued from the P645Z (.PEF ou .DNG) are smaller that the ones which comes from the GFX50
If you are using a CAMFI PRO PLUS transmitter to be able to shoot without a cable, it take more times to transmit a picture to your computer.
6 to 8 seconds for a pentax 645Z RAW and 16 to 20 seconds for a GFX50 RAW.
20 seconds is long when you wait to see the picture you have just taken on a large video screen.

TETHERED SHOOTING
-----------------
GFX50 is delivered with the free XACQUIRE software and a free plugin for lightroom (version 6 minimum).
There is also a free CAPTURE ONE software ... but this version is not the full version... no tethered shooting possibility with the free version ... you have to buy the whole version.
I suppose that FUJI has paid royalties.
It is still possible to use XACQUIRE to place the pictures in a directory and use the small C1 FUJI VERSION which will regularly look in this directory... so if become possible to shoot tethered

With P645Z you have 2 possiblities : buying IT2 software (Image Transmitter version 2) or using the free plugin for lightroom (version 6 minimum)
CAPTURE ONE do not accept the P645Z pictures (nore in .PEF, nore in .DNG). Phase One do not accept to open pictures from mid sized digital bodies as it is a concurrent of his own digital back).
Some people modify the EXIF data in order to look like a Phase One back file... and so they can use C1 to develop and adpat their RAW files.

Both bodies could be used with CAMFI PRO PLUS transmitter.

MENU
----

P645Z .... straigtforward .. do not need a lot of time to adapt yourself with this body

GFX50 .... confusing ....... need a lot of time to found the options you want to change ... have to make reminder's notes to not waste a lot of times

Personnaly, i prefer using the P645Z for hand shooting and the GFX as a digital back.

I observe on eBay, that the V1 for pentax is now available.
On Adorama, the Flashpoint R2 pro mark II is now in "BACK ORDER" ... some times ago, it was still "COMING SOON"
The Mark I version is also for sale at 49 USD in place of 69 USD ...
I suppose they want to sold their old stock of Mark I before saying officially that the Mark II will be shipped soon.

I've ordered the Mark II today ... I will see how much time it will need before I receive it.

Thanks, it's effectively the same problem ... but no solution were given in this thread.

So, I'm happy not to be alone to expirement this type of problem with the xpro transmitter .... same problem do not occur with cobra flashes from other brand.
Thus, it is well a specific problem with the XPRO transmitter.
The solution is, as mentionned hereabove, to isolate the electric contact, except the central's one ... with the above mentionned adapter or with a piece of isolating tape.

There is a option in the menu of the xpro to cancel the automatic standby ... one problem solved

I have another information to given :

I can use XPRO- NIkon version I and FLASHPOINT-Nikon Version II with my 645Z if i isolate the "ttl/ready flash" contacts with a piece of isolating rubber ... in manual mode.
I have found a flash shoe adapter on eBay wich has only a central contact on his base (towards the camera) and only one contact on his top (no more need to use a piece of isolating tape)

---------- Post added 03-14-19 at 02:24 AM ----------

Good to know also :

new firmware for the mark II flashpoint xpro transmitter are to be downloaded from adoram : version 1.1 for canon and nikon and version 1.2 for sony ....
not yet dedicated mark II version for pentax

I have discovered another problem with the GODOX xpro-pentax transmitter.

I use a 645Z and GODOX AD600 series flashes and AD200 flashe

When i use the 645Z with this transmitter with A or FA lenses, the transmitter let the flashes works in
A,T,M or X mode and in P-TTL or Manual Mode

When i use the 645Z with a adapter for russian lenses (Kiev Vega 120mm or Kaleinar 150mm or Telear 250mm or
sonnar 180mm, sonnar 300mm, Tair, Telemegor 300 ...etc) .... there are no electrics contacts on these lenses, so it is
normal that i can't use P-TTL mode, but it however has to works in Manual Mode ....

But ... the transmitter do not let the godox strobe works (no flash emitted), even in "X" mode.

I have to put a piece of isolating rubber so that there is only the central contact of the shoe which
come in contact with the 645Z (isolation of the TTL and ready flash contacts) ... so the godox flashes work with non Pentax Lenses ... but the transmitter
goes in "waiting state" 2 or 3 minutes later and to not return to "active state" when i half press the release
button of the 645z. I have to press any button on the transmitter so that it become again "active" ... for
2 or 3 minutes .

It is very frustating, and even more when i observe that with a YONGNUO cobra flashe (YN585EX), i do not have this problem.
Even with non-pentax lenses (lenses without electric contacts on it) the yongnuo works and i do not have to isolate the "TTL/ready flash" contacts on his shoe.

I curious to know if the same problems arise with other pentax bodies (K1, K3, ...) and non-pentax lenses (manual
lenses without electric contacts on it) in use with the xpro-pentax transmitter.

I will try to see if the same problem arise with Pentax 67 lenses mounted on 645Z and the xpro transmitter.

Hello,
I have upgraded my CAMFI PRO to CAMFI PRO PLUS thursday.
There was some problems for the camera to be recognized ... i have taken contact with CAMFI's support and they send me another software. Thanks for their reactive answer.
Now, the camfi pro plus sent and receive the data to/from the camera. This camera is recognized as it was put on the usb port with a cable, but there is no cable ... only WIFI
So I can shoot in tethered mode over wifi with Image Transmitter 2 (download very quick of raw files), but also with the "PF_Wifi_Usb_Tether " (take much times to download and must choose USB mode of the PF_Wifi_Usb_Tether" software) .
see enclose pictures

So very happy to be able to shoot in wifi tethered mode with the 645Z.

---------- Post added 01-19-19 at 02:21 PM ----------

I forgot to say that it works very well with my NIKON D800 et D850, CANON EOS6D ... tested with Lightroom, with capture one and with DigicamControl ...

Pentax 645Z was not in the list of compatible cameras, but it works .... i think that the producer of Camfi has not the ability to test all available camera and probably indicate only the ones he has personnaly tested or that users have said that it works.

Hello,

The chinese factory which produce the WIFI transmitter CAMFI and CAMFI PRO has just announced the disponibility of his new version CAMFI PRO PLUS transmitter.
It act as a relay between a tethering software (like capure one or lightroom or canon eos downloader and perhaps other software like this) runing on a computer (windows or mac).
Each camera body which could be used throug usb cable should become usable through wifi ... the CAMFI PRO PLUS sent the request from the tethering software, receive the answer from the body and transmit them to the tethering software as if it would come from the usb port.

here the link to CAMFI :

CamFi Pro Plus - Professional wireless tethering solution for 500+ cameras

Could be interesting for camera without wifi integrated in their body

An update from CAMFI PRO to CAMFI PRO PLUS (probably a software which permits the upgrade of the firmware) will be available from 18.01.2019 for the ones (like me) which have already a CAMFI PRO transmitter.

I hope it will works with "transmitter 2" or with the developed in java "TETHER SOFT "

---------- Post added 01-10-19 at 06:52 AM ----------

I forgot to says that, after upgrade of the firmware, the transmitter will be usable in 2 modes :
- as now, with the tethering software developed by CAMFI (for some NIKON, CANON and SONY camera)
- as a relay between other tethering software (C1, Lightroom, ...)

Some research on internet .... and I see now that Flashpoint R2 app is, until now, only available for APPLE (it seems that it's a copy of the Godox application, but in blue in place of orange)

?Flashpoint R2 on the App*Store

Godox releases Android version of their app - Lighting Rumours

So, if you wanted to acquire the mark II model to use it with your android smartphone .... you will perhaps be desappointed !

I think that ADORAMA would notice it clearly in his description of his product ...

I you do not have the right smarphone (one which correspond to the above mentionned series) ... you will not have many advantage over the original trigger (mark I) except for some buttons ....

Apple users have more chance, but it's not my case.

I have tested on another computer equipped with INTEL Icore computer in order to see if it was eventually the type or processor which would influence -the non working of the emulator.
With Icore7, emulator NOX version 6220 or LeapDroid accept to works, but when I want to use GODOX app on it, these 2 emulators says that GODOX app is not compatible ...
When i look at the "godox app" inofrmations in google store, it is mentionned that it will only works with some smartphone ... so, once again, the information from adorama seems to be not accurate .... if you do not have the right smarphone, you will not be able to use the bluethooth to manage the trigger from your smartphone ...

Here enclosed what "godox app" mention ...

In the meantime, I have tested the bluethooth connection with my samsung (android smartphone) and the xpro-n mark II.

First of all, in the notice from adorama, it is said that you have to install "Flashpoint R2" app on your smartphone through google play.

I have not find any "Flaspoint R2" app on google play store.... but I have found a GODOX app...

Once this GODOX app downloaded and installed, you simply have to pair your xpro trigger with your smartphone (it have been immediatly recognized, and I had only to introduce
the default password (which could be modified accordingly to your needs) (default password = 6 times 0 "000000" (0 number, not O letter).

It have worked immediatly with my ad600B (modeling light is only ON/OFF ... not proportional or percentage, but ON/OFF works).

So No "Flashpoint" App but a "Godox" App ... that don't care ... the most important is that it works correctly !

I have tested somme androïd emulator on win 10 in order to see if I could manage the trigger directly from my computer equipped with a bluethooth dongle :

BlueStacks .... refuse to works on my HP_Z620
NOX ........... seems to emulate a too old version of android ... and godox do not works on this 4.0 ANDROID VERSION
MEMU .......... do not works correctly on my HP_Z620

they are other android emulators, but today, download is very low (... to much people on internet which are buying gift for end year ?) and
downloading of some applications fails or takes 20 minutes before crashing ?

So I will try further after 22 hours o'clock.

Droid4x
GenyMotion
WindRoy
KoPlayer

and so on

Personnaly, i found that the problem with Affinity is the too long time it takes to charge a RAW picture.
For me, it's much much too long even if i use a Icore 7 processor with 32GB of RAM or a HP_Z620 with 2x ZEON processors (32 cores) + 64 GB RAM ....

I have already tested ON1, LUMINAR 2018, AFFINITY .... and i continue to use PHOTOSHOP (old CS5 version). But, i will not buy further version or photoshop (i dislike to have to pay each month).

The mark II version of the XPRO triggers announced that it will be possible to use proportionnal ratio for the modeling lamp.

It do not actually works like promised :

- with godox AD600B, I can only put modeling light ON or OFF (as with the original xpro-trigger)
- with godox SK400II,I cannot use the fixed ratio of light

nor can i use the possibility to put the modeling light down during recharge of the capacity
which is always used to let the photographer see that all of the flashes in the studio have well fired.
If one light don't goes OFF, this perticular flash has not fired.
It's a visual indicator ... (the audio signal emitted after full recharge, in a configuration of multi-flash, let not know which flash would have not fired)
As with the AD600 the recharge is so fast, this visual indicator is no always visible ...
In the past, generator taken 3 to 10 seconds to recharge, and so you have the same time to see if all the flashes have fired.
Now, with the AD600, the recharge is very short and operate sometimes in a fraction of second,so you could sometimes not seen if the modeling has gone off at all.
It's annoying

With the SK400II it's a bit more annoying ... when I try to put the modeling light ON with the xpro-trigger, the light of flash goes ON in proportionnal mode (even if
the trigger mention "PRCT 25%" for instance. Moreover, the way the light goes OFF during recharge is automatically cancelled : the automatic GOES OFF is suppressed and
is replaced by REMAIN ON. If I have put manually the SK400II in 50% of modeling light, when i press the MODeling light of the trigger, the flashe goes also in PROPortionnal mode

So, the advantage presented in the documentation of the mark II is not usable

The reason why the trigger do not operate as promised is that GODOX is a little inconsistant in the way their different moidels of flashes
manage the modeling lamp (same presses of modeling buttons do not activate the same mode on each of the models of flashes) :

examples :

on the AD600B ...
when the modeling light is OFF
first press on modeling button = modeling on 1/3 of power
second press = 2/3 of power
third press = 3/3 (full power)
next press = light OFF, ready for a next cycle of presses

on the SK400II ...
when the modling light is off
first press = modeling ON in proportional mode
second press = modeling remain ON, but in percentage (in combination with the rotative button to select the wanted percentage)
next press = light OFF, ready for a next cycle of presses

long press = light goes OFF during recharge
next long press = light remain ON during recharge

The godox trigger initiate only the first press (and never the second, third and next presses) ... and so the functions of next presses doesn't
operate.

On the trigger i can well put the modeling light in PROP (proportionnal) or PRCT (percentage) and choice the percentage I want, as described in their notice.
The little screen let this data been seen, but it has no actually effect on the flashes themselves (which only accept, with the trigger, to be ON or OFF)

Perhaps, this PROP/PRCT is only usable with the new godox AD600 PRO or AD400 PRO ?

I have not yet tested bluethooth with a tablet or a smartphone ... which is not very interesting for me

What would be interesting for me, would be the possibility to command the trigger from the screen of my computer when I shoot in tethering mode with Capture One.

There are applications which let ANDROID APP works on WINDOWS ... it's perhaps the way i will try

The appearence of all the versions of the xpro godox trigger seems to be identical ...
It seems that there is only the name indicated on the trigger that is different (xpro-N or xpro-C or xpro-P) ...
inside it is probably the same electronics which is present ?
So, I ask myself if we could update the firmware of a xpro-n (for instance) with the firmware of the xpro-P ... and get a xpro-p trigger usable ?

if i do not work, and if we can't re-install the initial firmware ... we loose 69 $

It is probably only to try if you change your camera from one brand to another brand ... (if you change from NIKON to PENTAX for instance ... the
XPRO-N would no more be of use ... so it would be worth to try ) ?
