Pro Standards Are Dropping ...

I can't speak for others' areas, but I have noticed this trend as well. I have seen some of the work that a lot of "pros" are doing and I'm like, "I could have outdone that years ago when I first started". I'm not a pro by any means but I am beginning to understand why I have very little trouble finding work and new clients. I was speaking with a client a few days ago about some headshots she needs done for her volleyball team's coaches. And she showed me the "professional" they used last year. When she told me how much they were charged, I was mad.

It seems like there's more people in the field who have these expensive, full frame and/or $2000+ cameras and no clue how to operate them. It's all feels...robotic when I look at their work. Oh well. They can keep doing what they're doing. I need these gigs so I can get my next premium glass. :D

Gonna suggest something not on your list if you don't mind. I will personally vouch for the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.

Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro HSM (Contemporary) Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

I do a lot of concert and paid event photography gigs and it has been a workhouse in my kit. Very well rounded, a pleasure to use, versatile, within your parameters and Sigma lens come with that extended warranty provided you register the product. It's got great Autofocus too; which would be a boon if you're doing a lot of kids' candid shots. It's both fast and quiet. I bought mine on special for $350 (lowest price I've ever seen new for it) from B & H. It's usually $400-450. Some of my customers' favorites have come from this one. This along with my Sigma 30 f/1.4 are the MVPs in my Pentax kit. :)

Benefits to Film Era Cameras?

Yep, I know where I am going and have gotten the chance to speak with the department head, check out their lab (they have a full stocked darkroom and they are passionate about film as well as digital) and other students. They were very nice and accommodating. It seems a lot of the teachers focus more on concept and aesthetics. I am definitely more of a technical thinker so the balance would be appreciated.

And I just love photography as whole. I want to learn as much as I can about it and experience it from all sorts of perspectives. I am of the digital era and the curiosity about another format was too great for me to ignore. Always trying to learn new things.

I didn't realize this thread would remain active all this time. But I enjoyed reading all the observations and comments so far. I am actually exploring film photography now. Too much curiosity on my end not too. Additionally, I recently decided I am going back to school to get another degree. This time in photography. I want to see what kind of skills are fostered through formal education. All of my experience is self taught or from watching/reading other people and techniques. And since I am going back to school, film is something I must learn. Definitely excited. Also, I have really admired some of the examples other users have posted. Film has a dreamy kind of quality to it that I want to capture.

Technically, this isn't software but this doesn't really fall neatly into any other categories.

I have a Flickr and Instagram but I wanted to look into what other photographers use to host and share their photos. What are pros using these days? All these Google searches bring up conflicting information. What should every pro or aspiring pro use? Why? Thank you in advance for any answers.

Totally agreed. The settings I shoot in generally have a lot of people around me. I have to constantly keep tabs on my surroundings to make sure I'm not about to hit someone or more commonly, them hitting me.

Sven Gustafson. I know who he is and I think I randomly met him a while ago. But yeah if I saw him, I would recognize him. I think he also worked for the Oakland Press, which is the publication I do freelance work for.

Small world lol

I do work for Otus Supply(Ferndale) and Strand Theatre (Pontiac). I have sights set on El Club and a few other venues where I have some connections. :D

Yep, exactly. I am sometimes able to get to the Light/Sound guy to avoid certain colors and that is lovely when it happens. Unfortunately though, I can't rely on that. If you're gonna hire photographers, at least let them have some input on the light. It is our lifebood!

Detroit has changed so much now that it's very different to shoot there now. It's a different vibe than just a few years ago. Way more people walking about, way more businesses, parks and adventures in general. My Detroit project will be ongoing because of this. I am always finding new stuff every time I am down there and I grew up here. I know the city extremely well.

Also that's cool, I live like 20 minutes from Windsor and I'm there fairly often. I have yet to really take my camera around there but I know the area well.

Currently, I am a freelance photographer. I do work for a local newspaper but locals seem to recognize me for all the concert work I do. I work for a few, great venues here in Metro Detroit. I am currently building my experience so that I can work for more of them. I enjoy the concert and festival life.

I have a degree in Computer Science but decided I wanted to go back and get an undergrad in Photography. So I will be starting school again this winter. I hate school but I'm good at it and I love learning.

As far as fun side projects: I have 3 currently. One will remain ongoing for a while:

Project: DETROIT. I am a native and want people to see the side of Detroit they don't get the see. I want to encapsulate the true spirit of a city that is constantly getting flack from outsiders who only trust what they hear on the media. I want to show the kind of stuff you can only see if you walk these streets.

Project: POSITIVE. The current state of American politics is leaving people more cynical and jaded than ever. I want to show that there are great people everywhere doing great things for other people.

Project: AUTUMN. This one is self explanatory. It's almost fall. It' s my favorite season and Michigan wilderness in the fall is amazing. I want to show the rich explosion of colors and really show off the warm tones. I don't do a lot of landscape work but it is one of the reasons I went Pentax. I'me excited because I live in the most populated area in the state. But several hours up north, there is an abundance of wildlife, state parks and all sorts of beautiful scenery. And even in an urban setting, there is a lot of magic to be captured.

That's about what I have on my plate now. :)

How to set white balance for concert photography?

Concerts are primarily what I shoot. And this is more or less what I do.

The venue I work for the most has this awful habit of using blue/purple LEDs which makes takes out more detail than the other lights. I shoot RAW+ and do adjustments in Post. If the LED/strobes are too overpowering and I can't get an accurate tone, I will either switch the picture to black and white, or go for a surreal, artistic effect. But I primarily just make my own WB adjustments manually by adjusting the Tint and light Temperature. Dealing with Red, Pink, Green and Yellow isn't that difficult honestly. The venues I shoot rarely give me ideal lighting conditions so I'm used to tweaking it in Lightroom before I do any deep edits, if any.

I'm also not afraid to just do some surreal, exaggerated edits as well. When you have artists like Perpetual Groove or Twiddle who enjoy a huge light show, and everything is changing constantly...don't fight it. Just work with it and get creative. You get some great shots that way, IMO.

How did that crow adventure go? Thanks for linking that thread. I'm definitely gonna have to try that.

I think whether it's sooner or later, I'll end up getting this lens. I can see myself enjoying it. It just may not be the one I get for the reasons listed in my OP.

I did. I always do before I post on a particular piece of equipment. Still helps to read, real time, testimonies today. The admins and veterans always give me food for thought that may not have been covered in the review. Though I didn't look at the sample photos on this site so that is useful. Thank you.

That makes sense and I didn't really consider that. Would the longer throw be more of a boon for Manual Focus, since you have more control in finding the sweet spot? I don't mind having to use MF but then again, especially for reason #2, I can see that being inconsistent without really knowing the lens.

I will look into the 77 as quite a few people suggested it. Something of note, I do outdoor work in the winter/spring and our weather is pretty all over the place. The WR was a reason I was considering the lens in the the first place.

In the future, I will be looking for a street photography lens with a little more reach than some of my other primes. For example, I have the 40mm XS and love it's diminutive size but there have been plenty of times where I wanted a prime with more reach and higher IQ. So I have been looking at the 100mm WR. The primary uses I would consider it for are (in order of most likely to least):

1. Outdoor street photography where reach is needed.

2. Indoor event photography.

3. Portraiture (if the subject wants more space; I have wider primes; I just figure options don't hurt since this isn't the primary reason for wanting this lens).

It's worth noting that this would be used on crop sensor but I eventually want a full frame. Do you think this lens would be a good fit for my needs? Also, if you have any photos taken in similar situations, I would love to see. I have been curious about this lens for a while. Thanks for any insight!

Backup Body to K-70?

It appears either way, I would be waiting a while. In that time frame, I could just get a K-1. But I'd rather focus on getting better glass before going that route. I think I'm gonna get another K-70 and save for some Star lenses, I've had my eye on. They're all great cameras either way and premium glass is something I am sorely lacking in. Though, I'll definitely keep my eyes out for updates on the new K-3 III or whatever it gets labeled lol

I have not been following this closely but in regards to the replacement for the K-3 II:

We know a replacement has been announced but no real details on when/what yes?

Is there some kind of press thing or something that Pentax is doing soon that has people thinking they may announce it then? I am curious about that.

Ahhh, gotcha. That makes up my mind then. I found the K-3 II's AF to be lacking for the applications I used it in and I have all of the same lens I had then, now with my K-70. And I definitely found the K-70 to be more reliable all around. So I guess I'm picking up a silver one to compliment my black one.
