Bay Area KP Owners: Can I try your camera?

I just got back from visiting a number of camera stores in Japan and was in heaven playing with all the different makes and models. I think your idea of trying a KP first is a very good one. As much as I have considered the KP and like so many of its features, I simply can't get over the ergonomics of the camera. No matter which of the three optional grips is on the camera, for me with my medium-large hands, I simply can't get comfortable with the shallow feel of the grip. It doesn't feel secure and the control wheels don't feel like they are in exactly the right position. Maybe I could get use to it, but I worry it would detract from my enjoyment when using the camera.

Obviously, it could be the right camera for you, but I think your idea of trying a KP before buying one is particularly important with this body.

Good luck!

Pentax K70 or KP with the 18/135 Pros & Cons

Welcome to Pentax!

About two years ago, I moved from the Pentax K-x to the K-70 with the 18-135mm WR, and I'm very happy with this combination. I've since added the DA 50mm prime, the 55-300mm PLM, a Tamron 90mm macro, and a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle. Of these lenses, the 18-135mm WR spends the most time on my camera (by a wide margin), followed by the 55-300mm PLM. Of course, which lens I am using depends a lot on what I happen to be shooting at the time. I think the 18-135mm definitely provides a lot of versatility for outdoor photography, while the 55-300mm PLM provides longer reach and faster focusing.

On the the K-70 vs. the KP, I would suggest you read the very good, detailed reviews available on PF. The KP has a number of great features that I really like, but one suggestion I would make is if you haven't actually handled both cameras, you do so before buying either. To me, the ergonomics of the two cameras are very different. The KP has three inter-changeable grips, but even using the largest one, for my medium-large hands the grip is not comfortable. I much prefer the depth and shape of the K-70 grip. For me, the control wheels on the K-70 are perfectly positioned. Having said that, in general, the KP features (including build quality) are better than the K-70's.

Bottom line: I don't think you could go wrong with either the K-70 or KP. Good luck with your decision!

Welcome to PF, and congrats on your K-70, which is a great camera!

I use three of the lenses mentioned quite a bit in this thread: the 18-135mm WR, the Sigma 10-20mm, and the 55-300mm PLM, used on a K-70. I also have a couple of prime lenses, and the 18-55mm. The lens that spends the most time on my camera (by far) is the 18-135mm, followed by the 55-300mm. Of course, which lens you will want to use really depends on the situation and what you intend to shoot, but the 18-135mm has versatility in its favor.

My suggestion would be to get the 18-135mm first, then go out and shoot as much as you can. Wait for awhile to purchase more glass, as I'm guessing you will be better positioned to figure out what you want after learning more about your new camera and what you enjoying shooting.

Good luck and have fun!

Considering a K-70 and 18-50 (HD preferred)

I agree with a lot of the responses from everyone else, and will just chime in on certain items:

2. I typically shoot in warmer weather and exclusively in raw (and rarely with LV), and find I get slightly less than 400+ shots. I do find the genuine Pentax batteries to provide more shots than the after-market brand I bought.
3. The 18-135mm spends the most time on my K-70, and by a wide margin, compared to my other lenses. (Second would be the 55-300mm PLM.) Considering all factors and to maximize flexibility, I use the lens extensively when traveling. I find it's just a good, all-around "balanced" lens.
6. I have had my K-70 for just about two years, and am at around 6k shots...all good so far! (Knock on wood.)

Good luck!

Which k-70 package?

I agree with everyone recommending the 18-135. I have the K-70, along with a total of five other lenses (three zooms, two primes), and the lens that spends the most time on my camera is the 18-135 due to its versatility. The lens that comes in second would be the 55-300 PLM, which I also highly recommend for its combination of reach, quick focus, IQ, form factor, and value.

I'm guessing you will end up totally loving your K-70...enjoy!

Congratulations on your new K-70! I got mine two years ago, and it literally has been so enjoyable that I am out shooting more than ever, which in my mind, is a pretty high compliment.

Have fun!

55-300 PLM and... Help me spend my money?!?

Welcome back to Pentax!

About two years ago, I moved from the K-x to the K-70 with the 18-135mm WR, and I'm very happy with this combination. I've since added the DA 50mm prime, the 55-300mm PLM, a Tamron 90mm macro, and a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle. I also have the 18-55mm from my old K-x, but don't have much use for it.

Of these lenses, the 18-135mm WR spends the most time on my camera, followed by the 55-300mm PLM. Of course, this depends a lot on what I happen to be shooting at the time. I agree with previous comments that these two lenses to start off with would cover a very wide range of uses...definitely a lot of versatility.

One quick comment on the K-70 vs. the KP. The KP has a number of great features that I really like, but I would suggest that if you haven't actually handled both cameras, you do so before buying one. To me, the ergonomics of the two cameras are very different. The KP has changeable grips, but even using the largest one, for my medium-large hands the grip is not comfortable. I much prefer the depth and shape of the K-70 grip. Having said that, some of the KP features are better than the K-70's. For me, that's why I'd love to hear some news about a new K-3iii (or whatever it will be called).

Good luck with your decision!

Advice on a possible new setup

Given your preferences, I would echo the earlier comments recommending the 55-300 PLM. I like mine a lot, as I think this lens is a great combination of focusing speed, clarity, size and weight, and cost. I also have the DA 18-135, and for general use, these two lenses pretty much have most situations covered.

Regarding the KP, if you haven't already done so, I would recommend you hold the camera first to check out its ergonomics. It comes with various interchangeable grip sizes, but for me (I have medium-large hands), even with the largest grip, it's not comfortable. I like a lot of things about the KP, but just can't get over the fact I feel clumsy with it in my hands.

Good luck!

KP, K-70, or K-3 II?

Having gone through a similar decision in terms of KP vs. K-70, I would suggest you try to hold the two cameras to get a feel for their ergonomics, if you haven't done so already. IMHO, the two cameras feel pretty different, and your preference may depend on the size of your hands.

Good luck with you decision...KP vs. K3ii vs. K-70; I'm guessing you'll be happy no matter which way you go!
