CIPA Feb 2020: Mirrorless still worse than DSLR

It shows simply that your parameter to judge a camera speed, MPx/s, is completly useless. The NX1 is completly useless to shoot something quickly compared to the Canon 1DxM3, same for a D5, that has even much lower MPx/s. It is not a useful benchmark, not for compute capability, not for anything related to taking pictures. It is just a useless number as a lot of different stuff is calculated at the very same time with the same hardware parts. Its like measuring the speed of a bike with gears by comparing cadence.

Well, what do you expect people to talk about when there is almost no new information but a new thread everytime Pentax shows another minimal information bit.

For wide angle it matters much more, right. Still at 180mm you need to converge the light towards the sensor and it is easier to find a compact setup if the last element does not need to open the beam too much.

In general, I would wait a bit before praising the new Tamron too much. The real performance is still pretty unclear at this point.

It is not a full readout for the evf, but it is also not just the amount of pixxels shown, especially for the high resolution cameras with evf. I cannot find specific data for the z7 right now, but it is a down sample, quite similar to the milcs that downsample 5k readouts for 4k video.

MPx/sec is very unefficient. The only thing that matters are fps, buffer size and time to clear the buffer. The nx1 can buffer pictures of less than 2 seconds in burst mode and takes a very long time to put them to sd card. How can this be a valid criteria for sports shooting or determining the compute power of the camera? The Canon 1DxM3 puts out roughly 400 MPx/s and is a totally different beast in any usecase. It computes everything faster and shoots faster by any means, there is nothing the NX1 can do faster, simply nothing.

With your parameter, the NX1 beats the Canon 1DxM3 in terms of speed and compute power and this is redicoules.

edit: Sony claims that even the A7 III supersamples 24MPx to 4k for video

Lens sells for mirrorless is much bigger than dslr lenses according to Sigma. That however may just be due to the fact that the mounts are pretty new, so people need to buy new lenses if they want native ones.

There are still small new lenses out there. Nikon z has smaller lenses for now, the 35,50,85 1.8 and also the relativly compact 24-70 f2.8 and f4, the Canon rf 35 1.8, the Sony 35 1.8 and 55 1.8 and 85 1.8 as well as the complete Zeiss Batis lineup. There is demand for small lenses. The Canon rf 70-200, the Tamron 70-180, all of them are smaller than the old mount equivalents.

Not all new lenses are big and according to Sigma their best sellers are the smaller lenses like the 56 1.4.

It is however a downsample of a lot of pixxels more than displayed. Otherwhise the picture in the evf would get grainy as hell.

MPx/s is a useless parameter as it does not determine any function by the camera and use of milc.

The nx1, as based on android, is a special case with a lot more processing power than others back then indeed.

First of all, the parameter you are looking at is a very bad indicator for cpu power. While the K3 is completly locked up getting those fps, the Z7 does a lot of other computing by the side. It produces images for the evf, it has a complete picture analysis (eye-af) and predictive tracking (granted, at the z7 working more or less badly). Still, the Z7 has a weak cpu compared with a A9, a D5 (and D6) or a 1DxM3. The R5 will propably also outperforme the Z7 in this matter, I cannot see another way for 8k full sensor footage otherwise.

Another indicator: if you look at the pure cpu power of the camera: it does take more processing to create the compressed raw files for 9fps shooting than the 8fps 14bit NEF files. This seems to rather be a limit in buffer bandwith.

Also, in the last six years there was not much more gain in processing power than doubling. Looking at Intel for example we already had 14nm Broadwell six years ago. AMD changed a lot since than, which is mainly because they started at a really bad place. Single thread performance of ARM did not change much either, they only print bigger dies now.

Looking at interconnection bandwidth (which I guess is the bottleneck for the Z7 at what you are looking at) it is pretty much the same. A doubling in six years is the best we had.

Times have changed and without bigger dies, the performance increase is not as it used to be.

If you use jpg with this generation you should not use the standard profile. If I remember correctly, and I am not sure about this as the last camera jpg I made with this generation is about 10 years ago, the profile "bright" was closer to the profiles of other manufacturers standard ones.

It also has a very fast processor.
Even the slow (in terms of compute power) z7 manages 60fps, having double the compute power is not uncommon in high-end bodies now.
The sensors are fast enough these days, they are not "slow stills sensors". In fact, they come from the same wafers as video camera sensors in some cases.
The af pixels of the a9 II are gettinf indepent readouts from the other ones btw, so the total resolution of the sensor does not matter for this topic.

Those are completely uncomparable data.

The data from lens rentals are more or less complete data but for a more than average use case in terms of demand on the lenses. The amount of wear on rent items is generally higher than average privat use, this is true for almost every area. A photojournalist of course would be the opposite, he propably stresses his daily use lens even more.
The data from the poll are data without control. The majority of users does not state how the lense was used. In the end, there are probably a lot of people who just klicked a button because they feel one option should win, without owning the lens. If the people who had failure are more active in such a poll is up to debate, on the one hand people tend to talk about bad experiences a lot, on the other hand some might have left Pentax and are not in a Pentax related forum due to the failure. In any way, the data are completely flawed and can only be compared within the poll, not to the statistics by lens rentals. Those are data of different types.

I seriously wonder if they still produce sdm lenses or they just have a bit enough stock that they will let run out at some point. Is there any information if those lenses are still produced in 2020?

MILCs can record full HD at 120fps without cropping. Readout speed is a non-issue for quite some time already.

The Alpha 9 II reads the AF 60 times per second, this is not the bottleneck.
The only thing holding MILC back is the quality of the evf. If it reaches mirror level I don't see any reason why not use it.
I was talking very badly about evf, I remember the Sony A7 I as making me feel travel sick and very laggy, but since I tried the new generation with good resolution and 120fps, I think they are on a good way.

I would actually not mind. The Tamron is a pretty good lense and despite the Sigma, which is out of production, there is no alternative.

The amount of money does not matter if it is not liquid.
The money is necessary to prevent insolvency where the cash is not free.
Of course inflation is a bad aftermath in this case, but the is no other option imho.
I own a house with two shops in it. Both are not able to pay the rent now. I won't insist on it at this situation and therefore postpone some work that I wanted to have done at the building instead which is not necessary. If they owe money to their supplier they are doomed, although their stuff they own would be easily enough to pay for it. Liquidity is all that matters. So we need easy credits right now and for the banks to give it we need central banks to enable it.
This will not prevent all damage to economy, but still is necessary.

We will see. I know already that my total income of this year is very significantly less than last year due to Corona. My company lost quite some money and therefore I will not get my winning share as I usually do. I will propably also need to cut my salary a bit. While I am happy to still be able to continue my life as usual and do not fear to loose my house or the need to change out style of living significantly, I know others will be in a very different situation. A lot of people earning good money but not being rich will have lost enough to not go buying luxury goods.
What is the impact for me? No DFA85 this year for me, even if it will be available, no new road bike, such things. Nothing bad for me, but if a lot will do the same, sellers will feel this.

I think the reason simply is the big part of cheap dslr sales like the Canon EOS 4000D. There is no equivalent in milc sales.

I think this is supposed to be better now than at release, but when buying the Sigma one should include the price of the usb-dock and they are, afaik, out of production now. It is possible to calabrite it very precicessly and than it is a nice lens.

I personally mostly always prefer primes, but currently there are not many (or none) fast wide angle ones available for Pentax at the moment.

The Sigma is not a no-brainer, but I think for some people it is a very good option.
What are the Pentax primes in this range available new? DA15 f4, DA21 f3.2, FA31 f1.8, FA35 f2, DA 35 f2.8, DA35 f2.4 are the ones I can remember out of my head. Did I miss one? There is only the FA Limited with f1.8, that alone makes the Sigma a valid option. I do not mean everybody needs fast wide angles, but some do.

The full Penron lineup is also an option of course. 15-30 f2.8 and 24-70 f2.8.

I agree on the last paragraph. But there is a lot of other ways of doing science than isolation of parameters, it is just not possible in too many cases. It is just a matter of which conclusion is drawn.

You mean for k mount or generally?
If looking generally I am not too sure, but I never took time to examine other brands aps-c lenses too much in the last decade.
Just a list of lenses I think of that possibly may compare, but I do not know myself
16-70 f4 Sony Zeiss
16-80 f2.8-4 Nikkor
16-80 f4 Fuji

I own the 16-85, and after service by Pentax it is okish for me.
I never really liked it, I only take it at bad weather (the DFA 50 is my only weather sealed prime in this range) or if I have absolutely no idea if I will take photos at all and have no idea which kind of photos I will make. I mostly use it as a wide angle, but at 50mm and above I am really not a big fan of the outcome.
It is tough, as long as the 16-50 does not get reworked, to come up with a better zoom at this range for k mount though.
I am much more of a prime shooter and maybe am just not the right audience for such a lense, but I never fell in love with it as others here seem to have.
If weight is not an issue and you do not need the long end, you may have a look at the sigma 18-35 f1.8 in combination with your primes too or if you prefer combine the DFA 24-70 with another wide angle lens like the 15mm limited.
