The K-1 is absolutely killing me

I handled a K1 whilst in in Nakano, Tokyo, last week. While I was unsure before, I am now a firm believer. It ticks the right boxes in the right way for me and will now work on obtaining one as soon as possible. The build quality is superb and I really enjoyed the solid weight and feel of it. I was envious of the extra box of accessories that the Japanese will get with their K1 cameras too.

While you bought your camera for $430, I know that was not the Recommended Retail Price of the Kx when it was launched. So you can expect to see a lower street price for the K30, but for what it is and compared to the competition in the market, I think it is good value.

New magazine to come out twice a year focused on combat photography from Australia. It from the producers of the excellent quarterly CONTACT Air, Land & Sea magazine. While it is mainly concerning Australian and New Zealand troops, it also has things from other forces in various theaters of operation around the world. Hope others find this interesting and they are willing to accept contributions from all persons. I am not associated with them but I am a serving Australian soldier who is mates with a current Army accredited cameraman, who has supplied pictures for this magazine for ages. Electronic version of CONTACT Air, Land & Sea is free to all serving military personnel or to anybody who 'likes' them on their Facebook page.

Nikon D800E vs Pentax 645D

Comparing the Nikon D800E to any Medium Format camera, including the Pentax 645, is ridiculous. Just look at the countless forum threads on an infinite number of forums arguing about how inferior APS-C cameras are compared to Full Frame sensors. I doubt the next Nikon Dx model will be released and proclaimed to be the end of all 35mm cameras.

Sh*t people say to photographers

My recent experience was at work, I am a cook in the Army with an infantry unit. The guys I cook for work really hard and slog it out for hours everyday, so meals can be a real morale booster for them. On one occasion last month, the powers that be had only given me enough food for about half the soldiers I was feeding, calling for some creative thinking doing my version of five loaves and fishes. I take my camera away with me all the time and take what ever pictures I can, when it is allowed. A computer and projector in the dining hall for giving powerpoint based lessons was instead showing some pictures of the guys at work and play.

I serve myself and eat last, as is the tradition but thankfully there was plenty to go around. As I sit down with the others, they tell me how great the food is and that it was amazing how creative I was to do so much with so little food. So I am all chuffed and full of pride, which is quickly deflated when after looking at the photo display I get the "those pictures are great, you must have a great camera!!!"

All in the space of two minutes!

Two ways of tackling the APS-C sensor size issue. Either a large body with a tiny lens or a tiny body with a large lens. I suppose it is up to personal opinion about the ergonomics photographing them both. Technically you can easily say that the Sony is the larger camera when fitted with that kit lens compared to the Pentax pancake lens and vice versa.

Might want to have a small spacer (small block of foam) between the diffuser and the camera body. This would give the flash time to fill out more of the diffuser area. Making it a larger effective flash surface.

Until it is coloured and shaped like a cartoon robot, then it will be ready for the Japanese domestic market. That is how the Kr/x/m was treated. I do not think that sort of design philosophy and Marc Newson match in any way shape or form. However, the K-01 is not matching many peoples design philosophies, it is certainly a love it or hate it result. Then again neither were the special robot editions.

I love the look, especially the gear stick. Might be worth copying this effort just to see the look around the rally car service park. One of the video guys has a Momo racing steering wheel figrig mount for a P&S camera that works great. Now I wonder if I can work out how to make a cable release that would use an accelerator pedal?

I'm a left eye shooter - how much am I missing?

The left brain/right brain thing is over blown in my opinion. In the same way that everyone is not right handed, that does not mean that everyone has the same wiring patterns in the brain. A left handed sports person does not play their game with more flair and creativity than a right handed player as an example. So alas, the creativity still requires us lefties to put as much effort into it as every other right handed photographer.

As for taking photographs, I can not see how keeping my left eye open while shooting with the right eye is advantageous because I am concentrating on what I am wanting through the lens. I prefer the 'tunnel' vision I get shooting left eyed, composing my shots, rather than be distracted by what else there might be. After the taking the shot, it takes hardly any effort or time to peer over the camera with both eyes to find something new to shoot.

However after being in the military for over 20 years, I can confirm that is better looking through my rifle sights with both eyes open, looking for target of opportunity. I have never been in a life and death scenario with my camera requiring such attention and my rifle sights are only 1.5X. Which the brain can tolerate easier in forming a combined picture in your head, unlike when you might have a large zoom lens attached to your camera.

Travel advice

My suggestion for travel photography is something wide for the landscapes, a standard lens for low light and street photography and zoom with enough reach to capture details with in a landscape. It is nice to take wide angle vistas of the world as we travel and taking pictures of the views will be rewarding. However I feel it is better if you can record better details about why a certain place made you feel the way you did. Having the 50mm will allow you to walk through markets and crowds without a large lens, taking interesting close range detailed shots of people and places. The larger zoom can be used to show detail that would be lost in a wider angle landscape, like a close up of cobblestones or small waterfall etc.
Definitely and without doubt get lots of small SD cards and do not rely on a couple of large ones. Use a laptop, but also back up to an external portable hard drive, as I had my laptop fried by faulty hotel wiring, also if possible upload to the internet any pictures you can pending on what access you might have.

What gloves keep your hands warm?

For my point of view and being a little bit of thinking out of the box, the best way I find to keep my fingers warm during winter, plus my feet, the secret is to keep your head warm. Being in the army with too many years of bitterly cold nights on duty, it has always proven that if your head is cold, your body will draw blood away from your extremities in order to keep your central core and head heated. Does not matter what socks or gloves I wore, if my head was cold, so were my hands and feet. However with a good beanie hat, ideally for me with thinsulate linings allow me to cope with colder weather for longer without needing gloves and even then, just using basic gloves.

Fantastic work. It looks almost commercial grade. I like how it is not so obvious or confronting as some of the rifle stock/pistol grips can be. While it is in front of the screen, it is set back enough to see around it I guess. Well done.

Pentax K-5 Officially Announced

For those of you who are techinically minded about the SDXC issue.

Currently SDHC cards are based on FAT32 file system that limits it in many ways. Effectively caused by the limitations of MS Windows operating system. Mostly in card and file size. As laid out in SD Specification 2.0

SDXC cards currently come in SD Spec 3.0 and SD Spec 4.0 types. Spec 3.0 still retains the FAT file system and some of these cards can technically be in SDHC devices. Most of the initial SDXC cards are of Spec 3.0 and can be used like a SDHC card.

SD Spec 4.0 does away with the FAT file system but can not be used with SDHC devices. But allows for larger card and file sizes. The details of this specification are only just been made available across the electronic industry.

Now the Nikon D7000 can only shoot video in 20 minute bursts. This suggests it is still limited by FAT32 4gb file sizes. So it is obviously of SD Spec 3.0, so it is not a proper fully capable SDXC camera that would allow for bigger files sizes. Thus currently is it a technical branding issue.

Thus the Pentax K5 should be able to use certain SDXC cards that are SD Spec 3.0 but not newer SD Spec 4.0 cards. But a firmware upgrade could allow SD Spec 4.0 cards to be used, giving full SDXC capability.

Same old story with people always claiming the grass is always greener on the other side when comparing brand X to brand Y.

I just wonder if the AF and ISO settings will be able to capture how green that grass really is?

Japanese whaling vessel strikes Sea Shepherd

The actions of both sides has endangered the lives of both. I am not condoning whaling for a second. It is within everyones right to protest but not when there is no need to maliciously cause damage that could kill or injure someone (such as the laser incident). They play with fire, antagonising and inciting an incident and then one does occur they run off telling tales as if they were doing nothing to provoke it.

Just saying that both sides are as bad as each other in a messy and awful situation.

Saw a quad-rotored RC helicopter flying complete with gyro stabilised video camera zooming around inside the lobby of my hotel at the Repco Rally Australia, last September. Was being used to film indoors several interviews for TV coverage of the sporting event from low down to above, with the video looking like a complex camera boom was in action. It was virtually silent too which was also amazing.

After the interview, the camera operators were more than happy to allow us a look at what a brand new toy even for them. That model housed a lipstick video camera so no DSLR could be mounted, but it could be possible soon.

Australian Racism take II

The problem is that it has been taken completely out of context. It is not meant to be a white man trying to appease black people. It was about an Australian cricket fan trying to appease fans of the West Indies cricket team, who are touring Australia at the moment.

It is like an outsider being amongst the opposing teams fans in any sport. Like being seated amongst the Cheeseheads at a Green Bay Packer game for NFL, amongst the Man U red fans while you wear Chelsea Blue or trying to keep the Tifosi Ferrari fans happy.

It is definitely not about black people vs white people, race, colour or creed. Just the team they support.

The YouTube video and the way it is presented it wrong and is very misleading in its introduction to the ad. It is deliberately trying to stir up trouble where none exists.

It is part of a series of ads, all featuring the same Australian cricket fan. If this ad is supposed to be racist, then it also is degrading to Parents-In-Laws, loud friends and Girlfriends.
