Thanks for all the responses. I reduced the brightness of my view screen as suggested by UncleVanya and had much better luck last night. Still shooting DNG as suggested by several, but the RAW file was much closer to what I saw BOC last night. Here's a shot I took last night about midnight (July 5), 90 seconds, f 3.5, ISO 6400. When I opened the DNG in Photoshop, it was not all black as it had been before and it was really easy to edit it to get the shot I wanted.

I can confirm that if I set horizon correction to on, set the camera on a tripod with the 2 second timer, have the camera just slightly off level, and take a shot the image is definitely blurry with the most exaggerated effects on the edges.

I've only used the camera in a handful of other tripod situations but can confirm that without horizon correction on I've seen no such effect.

I now have a U5 preset named "Helios Sim". Need to try it out with my 44M to see just how swirly I can get.

This picture is with the zoom maxed out at 40mm. It was a great light that morning and I was not sure I could capture it, but this lens did on several different looks, this one was my favorite of the morning. It doesn't matter what focal length I use on this lens, I just love it. It has the limited properties, but it is a sharper lens than my 15. The lens is fun to use because it just gets results, limited by only my abilities. If I'm not shooting wildlife this is usually on the camera, I have found myself using another lens for a photo, and then thinking I better put the 20-40 on to make sure I at least get one worthwhile shot.

This was taken with an smc PENTAX-DA 40mm F2.8 XS mounted on a KP at 1/2000 F2.8 ISO200.

In my opinion, the best features of this lens are that its incredibly sharp and has fantastic contrast when shooting in black and white.
It’s also great for street style shooting as the focus is really fast and its incredibly small so people don’t get freaked out that you are taking photos.

My entry for the month

Pentax 645z - HD 28-45 F4.5

This was taken on Rannoch Moor

This lens is incredible - and massive. Razor sharp all over the frame, silent and rapid AF and stunning colour rendition.

I took this picture last January in the Vienna Forest, Austria, with a Pentax K1 and a HD Pentax AD 28-105 mm (f 3.5-5.6) lens; at 28 mm and f 9,5. The lens is quite versatile, with very good focusing across the field. In this pic, an f 9,5 gave me excellent DOF, and accommodated the effects for the sky and the moving clouds, for which I used NV filter and a 27 sec exposure. The B&W choice was for a more dramatic effect.

I'd like to nominate the smc PENTAX 1:2.8 30mm.

This classic 'K' prime lens (later version) seems to be able to produce images that are sharp and subtle at the same time! The areas in focus are sharp and well defined -- yet also gently subtle -- while the out-of-focus regions are presented with a soft, pleasing bokeh. The colours and contrast are nicely captured, and it even handles specular reflections gracefully.

Pentax K-5 II: ISO 100 | f/4 | 1/640. Gentle post-processing for white balance, brightness/contrast, clarity.

I nominate the SMC Pentax-F 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 zoom in combination with a crop camera like my K-3.

It is lightweight, sharp and has a perfect zoom range as a walkaround lens, because and not despite beeing 'only' a normal to short telephoto lens on APS-C (so when you are too lazy to go further back and just use the wide end of the lens when making some snapshots of family and friends you still don't end up with weird distortions like you sometimes do with wider zoom lenses).
It also handles flare reasonably well for an older lens and can therefore be used for nightphotography on a tripod as well.

I have my Fx1 button set to turn on the Red mode. If I select it there, it persists through the power-off/on cycle. But mine also persists if I select it from the menu.

I looked in the "Memory" setting, and in the third page of the memory setting, I have a checkmark next to Night Vision LCD Display. I think you need to turn that on.

Here is my contribution. Image shot with the Pentax 16-85mm at 35mm.

To me this image evokes powerful emotions. A child looking into infinity and the powerful beauty of nature, while grounding herself thanks to the fence and the stuffed animal, giving her reassurance enough to face that open space.

I'm happy with the technical aspects, but it's the story that I really like.

Here's my entry with the wonderful Pentax 645Z and the incredible HD Pentax-DA 645 28-45mm F4. 5

This was taken at 31MM at F16, ISO 100 at 1/6th sec.

_IMG0177 by Stephen Taylor, on Flickr

The shutter speed was used to allow for a small degree of movement in the water to be captured but not so slow that the waterflow wouldn't retain some texture. I used a Lee 0.6 soft edged GND to hold back the sky to allow the darker area's closest to me to be exposed without blocking the shadows and I used a 1 stop ND filter additionally to darken the whole scene to allow for that slower shutter speed.

What's so special about the lens. It's the best wide angle zoom ever made for any DSLR. Most wide zooms, particularly on FF formats distort badly, and have soft frame edges - even stopped down. What is truly remarkable about the 28-45 is sharpness is completely uniform centre to edge. This means as a professional landscape photographer I can completely trust the lens and compose the scene how I would like in camera, rather than compose around cropping smeary edges off the frame - or worse still discover the sides of the picture are too soft to pass muster when printing large or supplying for commercial use.Centre to edge sharpness is just as important as back to front sharpness in landscape photography. This lens was the main reason I bought into the 645z system after finding Nikons 14-24, 16-35 hopelessly substandard for my needs.

What's also useful, is the lens has a 82mm filter thread - which is ideal as most landscape photographers do use some sort of filter system.

28-45 is also a really great focal length for landscapes - wide enough to fit everything in without that awful distortion that comes from ultra wide lenses - and long enough to fit in scenes that may not have much foreground at all. It is a lens I can cover the entire of my Glencoe shooting with.

DA 50-200mm at 180mm. Even though it was at f5.6, I always loved how this one turned out.

One more from the DA 40mm at f2.8

From a short bike tour, probably the last one overnight for this year. For these I used either the da 40 or the da 70, edited in darktable and gimp.

It rained quite a bit, which brought out the colors in the leaves. Pano of 4 horizontal images overlapping significantly, so the final result is closer to 3:1 (hugin full auto stitch)

This one I found during an unplanned detour, just happened to pass by a small local park. For now it's my favorite from this trip.

Matching colors with the foliage :)
