Well, that's the thing. You made a sarcastic joke about something which actually is rather true than not.
There is enough evidence on youtube, review sites and complaining about AF on this forum. All you have to do is search.
I made the jump from Pentax to Sony in 2020. I was close to ridiculed here. Guess what, after the jump, all my AF problems went away
I get it. You love your brand too much to admit any shortcomings. I don't really care, keep at it. But I don't like seeing lies spread. It was this forum which persuaded me to upgrade to an K3 from an K50 in 2018 instead of jumping ship.
That was a mistake and I don't want anyone who is struggling with Pentax to make the same mistake. Peace. :)

4 things.
Lighting in shadow is extremely soft, there is no contrast. That's why things in shadows don't look sharp.
Your Sigma is an very old lens. It wouldn't surprise me if it simply doesn't have the resolving power wide open required for an 26MP aps-c sensor + there is definitely a little blur/bloom with old lenses wide open.
The dog is slightly back focused + I'd say there is motion blur. 1/1000 might not be enough. SR + OIS might not work together.
It's extremely hard to do, but don't look at images 1:1. Most clients won't care about pixel perfect focus, but the photo in general - emotions, framing, colors, the experience. Also add sharpness in the LR sharpening section accordingly. If you want to see the "REAL" sharpness, turn sharpening to 0.

Compared to others, it's a fair assessment to say it doesn't work.
Panning shots of boats or cars during the day with a long lens and closed down aperture is hardly a difficult AF situation.

D500 is 4 years old, you are saying possible better and thinking what Pentax/Ricoh charges is somehow okay even though D500 has better specifications.
They can charge whatever they want, but for the money it's not worth it.

I made the jump to Sony A7III. It feels like a shrunk K3 in my hand. Very happy with the ergonomics. I guess I have small hands or simply prefer a smaller body where my pinky goes underneath the body.
I tried a D7500 for a day once. That thing felt like a brick.

I might sell everything sooner... It all depends how the new body performs. It's move on or stay with Pentax for me. If the AF is still behind the competition it's goodbye from me.

"Pentax AF sucks has been nonsense since the K-3 was released."
I don't agree.

Compared to other brands, Pentax is doing almost nothing in the dslr space and there's no marketing = dead.
I think Pentax will remain for a long time and only release new bodies every ~5 years or whenever they see the need.
Let's not forget the waterproof line of cameras, the 360 cameras and the GR line. There's actually plenty going on, just not that much in the dslr space.
And as far as AF goes, for me, it has been quite inconsistent with all my gear(K3, tam 17-50, da*50-135) and rented ( K1 + 50/1.8, DFA15-30, DA*16-50).
I really want a fast body/lens combo that focuses reliably and Pentax doesn't offer atm anything, so for me Pentax is dead too. And it's a shame. I love the ergonomics and design of both the K1 and K3.

file the solenoid and keep your K30. It's not rocketscience.
I don't think the K20D is worth more than 50$ max. It's slow at 3fps. The IQ is worse. The raw files are far less flexible. The back LCD is low res. etc. Pentax K20D vs Pentax K-30 Detailed Comparison |

now you can try the filing method too.
I've had luck with the filing method on 3 cameras (out of 3).

There's no consensus. Replacing and filing both work for an unknown amount of time. There's no guarantee the problem won't come back. After all, we are not Pentax technicians here.

Your second question is indirectly answered already on the first page of this thread.
The conversion makes the lens use the camera's motor instead for focusing -----> which means it doesn't matter whether SDM works or not.

you didn't search at all. Both your questions have been already answered.
Regarding which bodies, that's on the previous page. (everything between *ist to K5.)

my K3 does this regardless of battery power and live view. It just freezes sometimes.

The original Pentax battery did 496 shots.
So at 350shots per battery the cheap alternative batteries are actually about 1860*350/496 =~1312mAh.

I just bought some crap batteries :P
2800mAh some unknown "Bonacell" brand. I actually ordered 1250mAh batteries.
I did a quick test on my K3.
One lasts for 350 shots - 30 sec shots in interval shooting. I'll test the original Pentax battery tomorrow. My gut tells me I'll get twice as much.
The other lasted for 221 shots while doing product macro photography, live view was on basically for over an hour.

Tried with another lens today.
I used a bright LED flashlight to light my wallpaper in a room with 3 lightbulbs working.
I tested with the center focus point(the 2.8 sensor) AND the one just right to the center (so not a f2.8 sensor).
Same issue and it's consistent. https://flic.kr/p/RyMPov https://flic.kr/p/2fftSpA
I was kinda relieved and devastated at the same time :D atleast my lenses seem to be working like they should. The K3 however... hmm.
Gotta sell that sucker quick and get a replacement, haha.
Funnily enough, I bought this camera from a photographer and she claimed she never had any issues.

As a sidenote, the AF seems to be more decisive and accurate now that it's screw-driven.
The repair has to wait though. I have a wedding coming up in 12 days. I'll rent a K1 + 15-30 + 24-70 and keep the K3 + 50-135 as a second camera for reach.

converted the lens, the issue still remains :/
Trying to focus on an A4 paper with small, but fat text. The K3 misses in landscape orientation by a long shot. Turn it to portrait orientation and voila, in focus.
Doing the same test on my wallpaper, the opposite happens. Portrait orientation misses, landscape is in focus.
Same test with a rented K20D - 0 issues.
Off to the repair shop with that K3. I hope they don't charge a kidney :(

After reading your thoughts my mind remains unchanged too. You can't tell much of a difference unless it's extreme like some of my examples. The clocktower has motion blur in it (tripod moved) which doesn't show up on the reduced version, but if you look closely the lights are a tiny bit brighter(not washed out). The thistle is blurry.
There is no way to tell how sharp a lens is when we are dealing with such low resolutions. Don't delude yourself.
*postprocessing and style is subjective. You don't have to like my images. I haven't said one bad thing about the image CSA posted. I simply questioned the sharpness statement.
