HAHA! Bonus points for you then! XD

If you come here tho be careful, tons of scams aimed at tourists, also thieves and muggers.

Avoid run-down areas and especially District VIII of Budapest and be alert if you see gangs of gypsies, even if they are only kids, if you don't want to end up surrounded and at knife point. Only ever use taxis from large companies, the small and private taxis are likely going to scam you, either going in circles and rigging the meter to charge you 10-20 times inflated price, or taking you to bars where they will charge you $5000 worth of Forints for a glass of beer. Generally avoid bars if you ask me, and always check bills everywhere, convert prices to Dollars with your phone before paying to get an idea. It should cost significantly less than what you would expect in the USA, eg. 250-500 Ft ($1-2) for a glass of beer, 350-600 Ft ($1.5-2) for a burger - if you go to a fancy place, $4-6 for a main dish. Keep to busy areas after dark, and always keep your cameras and other valuables safely in your bag and your bag within your sight. Take off and hug backpacks in large crowds eg. on public transport.

K50 + Auto-aperture manual lens issue

I used aluminum tape first as well, but the mount is manufactured so precise that the tape which is not thicker than a human hair made it so tight I had to apply considerable force to mount/unmount and was afraid this will damage the mount.

Lenses with no insulating coating will make contact with all of the pins.

Greetings!

I'm just a noob who always dreamed of becoming a photographer, but could never afford it. The best camera I ever owned was a Fuji compact digital camera - DSLRs or film photography were unreachable for a poor kid like me. When my Fuji got so old and worn that a crap phone's camera would do a better job I had to quit, and keep dreaming about getting a DSLR one day. This was 6-8 years ago or so.

Finally a month ago I borrowed a K-50 long term from a friend who had it laying around and collecting dust, with a kit lens and two old Chinon manual lenses (A zoom tele and an 50mm prime) and now I'm trying to learn the basics with them.

As such I don't really have much to show yet.

As for things other than photography, I'm a full time digital artist in the process of building up a business.

Don't expect too much activity from me just yet, but hopefully once I can devote more time to photography, and have some stuff to show I'll be more active.

Proceeded with scraping. It was easier than I thought. Cleaned with alcohol and wiped dry after.

I only scraped the area covering the one half of pins closer to the lock pin cavity, but this seems to be enough. Everything works perfectly now. :)

I don't mean to bash them, overall this is an amazingly decent camera for being an entry level DSLR, I'm really blown away by all the features and tough put into it. I really love it! But this is exactly why I find it a bit strange that something so simple as a surface coating causes an issue like this. Feels like an oversight.

By the way, I have a bunch of M42 Chinon/Revuenon lenses that came with an old Revueflex boxed kit, and they have a pin to actuate the auto-aperture. I assume that woN't be compatible with the Pentax frame? At least those have an A/M switch though.

We have a winner! :D

I have just found this out through another article and was about to post here. Indeed, with the other manual at my disposal, both the Green Button and the Optical preview work like a charm, and that has clear aluminum against the contacts while the tele giving me trouble has black coating. I verified the theory by very carefully mounting the lens with a piece of tinfoil over the contacts and suddenly everything worked with the tele as well.

Though why, Pentax? Why shorting the contacts? Isn't it good enough a clue if there is no contact at all? :/

I wonder if aluminum tape would work (I actually have some) so I don't have to remove the coating? I'm not entirely happy about sanding off protective surfaces, let alone about the risk of the metal dust getting inside the lens or body. The tape however has thickness, even if only a fragment of a millimeter - wouldn't that be enough to cause issues?

Thank you for everyone offering help!

Update: I applied aluminum tape. It's barely thicker than tinfoil, about a human hair, yet it's enough to make the mount very tight. It requires actual force now... and this is not good. At this rate this will grin the mount in the body.

So, after securing permission from the owner (borrowed gear) I proceed with removing coating. I have Q-tips and pharmacy alcohol to clean it afterwards.

I did but it doesn't work.

Enabled using aperture, set Green button to TV Shift, tried both M and Av modes, Auto and manual ISO...

The Green button does literally nothing, or only resets the shutter speed to 400. It does not engage the aperture and does not do a metering. And the K-50 doesn't have DoF preview.

Greetings!

I'm trying to use an old Chinon K-mount manual lens (Auto Chinon Zoom MC 70-210mm f/3.8) on a K50. This lens has Auto-aperture, but does not have an A/M switch. As such, the aperture is constantly open, and the body steps it down right before exposure.

The problem is that not only I can't see DOF, but the body doesn't step it down for metering, resulting in underexposure unless it's set to widest. Aperture goes from 3.8 to 22, so Ev compensation only gets me so far, leaving nothing but Manual mode to utilize it fully.

I found nothing about DOF preview in the K50's manual. There is "optical preview" but apparently that only works with electronic lenses like the kit lens. This puzzles me because the body clearly engages the Auto aperture for taking the shot, so why not for optical preview OR metering?

Is this normal? Can I do anything about it? It's a great lens but I can pretty much only use it fully open because of this. :(

Thanks in advance,
Storm
