Another strange 50mm Takumar

Interesting...of course putting the bulk of your post in an image makes the text inaccessible to forum and Internet search and somewhat difficult to read to boot. Am I interpreting correctly that the post is about two things? Namely:
  • You have a lens marked as one model (37902), but with characteristics you might expect on a different, limited run, model (37802)

  • You have another lens (marked 37902) with a unique and unusual beauty ring but is otherwise as you would expect for the model

Cool! The only thing I would note is that elements with thoriated glass (back three) are pretty much the norm for S-M-C (37902) and SMC Takumars (37908) and a frequent topic of discussion in regards to steps to remove yellowing. That does not mean that all examples have the radioactive glass, only that lacking such is not characteristic of either of the two multi-coated 50/1.4 Takumar models. The article below was written by PF member @glasbak and has example photographs as well as a table with model numbers.

Radioactive Pentax Takumar lenses.

I think it is likely that #4611675 is a typical 37902 sold pre-release of the S-M-C labeled product (these are known to exist) and that #4334600 is the strange one. The labeling and perhaps the lack of thoriated (yellowed?) glass are something new. Do you suspect it was a prototype of sorts?

Good point. I should have said, "particularly unique and personally desirable" or something similar.

Add one more to the list...
7. The lens has unique rendering.
I own about 15 M42 lenses. Most came attached to various bodies. Three were purchased as part of rounding out a four lens M42 kit. Three of the fifteen see regular use solely on the basis of their rendering. Those are:
  • LZOS MC Jupiter-9 85/2

  • KMZ Helios 44M 58/2

  • Auto Rikenon 50/1.7

Of those three, two were purchased specifically because for their rendering. The third came with a camera and was a surprise. One other that I bought based on reputation did not pan out, but I kept it anyway because it is pretty.

I bought a Bessa R3M new from CameraQuest three years ago, does that count? I would have preferred a close-out deal on a Zeiss Ikon ZM with Biogon 35/2 a few years earlier, but missed that deal by procrastinating one day too long.

i should be delighted to see a new line of M42 lenses – I had a brace back then – and would put them to good use documenting the rebuilt horse-drawn Zeppelins...

I'm not sure what would be gained... already M42 Takumars are fairly common and very reasonably priced. To reproduce a Takumar with even remotely similar quality standards would put it way above the price range of the old lenses. You can buy a pristine S-M-C Takumar 28mm f/3.5 with hood and case for around $70... less, if you are diligent. What would a reproduction of equal quality cost and would it really be any better? I'm not a digital camera user, but the only advantages of making modern M42 lenses would be 1: people might stop messing with the mounts of old lenses in an attempt to make them more digital friendly and 2: the prices of old M42 lenses might go back down a bit as more modern alternatives were available. Both of those thing are a win for users of Spotmatics (and related cameras), but the digital camera user probably wouldn't see any real improvement. Am I missing something?

I also have some early Auto-Takumar and Super Takumar 55s that have no code on the A/M switch. The Takumarology Field guide lists your lens as produced May 1963 to 1966. Batch: 829580 to 830958, and product code 350/43500

All Pentax 67 versions used the same mount and those lenses can be used on the Z with adapter. There were 30 optically different lenses made for this system and there is performance differences between them, so investigation is required to make choices between them. Of course the 645 film lenses are an easier choice because no adapter is needed.

More or less, but because the 645Z sensor is itself "cropped" compared to 645 film, the crop factor between it and FF is not as dramatic at 0.79x. You'd be looking at closer to 70mm.

Here is a table with some quick conversions:

The Crop Factor Unmasked - Articles and Tips | PentaxForums.com

As for adapting 6x7 lenses, it's actually really handy because the camera can sense the position of the aperture ring, so you get full Av and M support.

The P6x7 bodies have two lens mounts, an inner bayonet for the shorter lenses and an outer bayonet for longer lenses (the outer bayonet lenses do not support open-aperture metering). The Pentax 6x7 -> 645 adapter supports both mounts but independent ones may not. That aside, I'd always recommend the Pentax adapter on a D or Z. The Pentax adapter supports manual & aperture priority exposure modes, and the D & Z bodies will display focus confirmation with 6x7 lenses.

The 'crop factor' feels more complicated because you're comparing full frame 6x7 format lenses with 'cropped' 645 format (a substantial difference). It works the same way as APS-C & FF - I.e. the focal lengths remain the same - you're just using the centre portion of the lenses. The diagonal of the Z is 55mm (equivalent to about 43mm on FF), thus a traditional 'portrait' lens is likely to be roughly double that (depending on personal taste).

6x7 lenses spanned decades of production, in that time some lenses remained fairly static (but were renamed as the years passed), many went through several different versions, some like the zooms were only available later on. The lens reviews cover the different versions of each lens - generally the 'later' versions are optically better than the earlier ones but use more plastic instead of metal: Pentax 67 Medium Format Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

It is interesting that Pentax abandoned the outer bay use on their newer telephotos, the 400 and 800 EDIF lenses. After using two of these outer bay lenses, I must say that this was a good idea. They are a pain to use, mostly due to the mounting on the body and the mounting of tubes or converters.

The P67 105mm f/2.4 may be a good choice for portraits with the Z.

yes, Pentax has an original adapter, it does not lose the photometry if you want to use Lens 67 on it.
You can use hasselblad V lenses also with use 150mm 2.8 and 50mm 2.8 great results.

van Oosten's book does not list any serial numbers for the lenses in question. What we have is the PentaxForums serial number database, but it doesn't include the product id.

As you indicate, this lens is probably the result of a repair job, that switched out the front ring for reasons unknown.

Yikes! This means I'm not a true Pentaxian. I only ever had one Takumar 50mm/1.4 (very late version) but I got rid of it because I much prefer the 55mm. I've got two of those.

The only 50mm I own at the moment is my 1947 Kodak Anastigmat 50mm/3.5 that I've converted to K mount. Sharpest 50mm I've ever owned by far, and I'd love to see how that one works on a K-1. If only there was some sort of win a K-1 contest going on. . .

You can never have too many 50mm F1.4 lenses! A true Pentaxian has at least five.

PentaxForums' serial number database indicates some overlap in numbers when one looks at the Super-Takumar 50mm F1.4 entries. Perhaps some of the entries with the higher numbers are placed in the wrong section. Or perhaps they are Multi-Coated Super-Takumar lenses like yours!

My (not multi-coated) Super-Takumar lenses are in the low end with serials 1553725, 1648481, and 3142796. My Super-Multi-Coated is up at 5835273.

Further data points for you:

My Super-Takumar 50/1.4 (thoriated, confirmed with gamma counter) with standard (for Super Tak) aperture, i.e. close-down pin only, is 1875529, lot 37800 on the rear of the M/A switch.

My Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50/1.4 with open aperture metering gear has the identical "look" (i.e. the metallic, not the rubberized focus ring), is 5530544, and the switch number is 37902.

I also have an FA 50/1.4, but my f/1.2 lens is a Rikenon. I guess I don't quite make the cut as a true Pentaxian!

Based on all the information so far, it seems like an early/prototype label for a typical S-M-C 50/1.4.

I'm impressed that you're in direct touch with Gerjan van Oosten. Prices for his book are so high these days that I can't afford to buy a copy, but I keep hoping that one will turn up cheap in a charity shop somewhere.

I think the Takumar prototypes usually had 3 digit model numbers, so we're stuck in the realm of speculation until we know that crucial information for certain.

Get a square (ish) vase or glass and you can beat the flare with the wall of glass perpendicular to the lens. Keep a flat tank or vase side parallel to the sensor and it should be less likely to flare and easier to focus. Then set lights or natural light and go to f/8 for a bit more DOF.
