Thanks for the suggestions bimjo. I've been looking at some 30 year old photos that I took when I was a youngster, but it's been so long since I've been home I'm haveing a hard time remembering the locations.

That's it, just the 300mm. Self challenge so to speak.

Heading to Washington state for 30 days of landscape and nature photography on 9/18/2012. Just one catch. I will only be taking one digital body, one film body, and a super tak 300mm f4.
Any suggestions on subject or shooting locations?

Fresh Air has done well for 80+ years. With or without me. Haven't tried Bind pig yet, but I'll get after it next time I'm down that way. Welcome to the forum.

I love that area. I used to get down that way quite a bit when I worked for Fresh Air Bar-B-Que in Athens.

Don't know what the policey is at Disney world, but I've been run out of Disney land a time or two for using a tripod. Sorry, I know that didn't answer your question, but you might want to check on it.

Now, if we could just get Wal-Mart to phase out Wal-Mart all would be good with the world.

I think Pentax has been and is doing just fine without our advice. If you want to run things at Pentax, bye the company.

I don't remember ever not having a flashlight in my bag. I've used them for everything from finding my way out of the woods to adding a little extra light to a photo. Also very helpful when shooting macros

I, like many here started in photography many, many years ago with film cameras. So I've been using light meters for a long time. I still do. I get better results with a hand held meter, and as crazy as it sounds, I kinda enjoy using a hand held.
To answer your question though, if you can get your hands on one without breaking your bank, then I say go for it. You will find times when you'll be happy that you have it.
I wouldn't be without one.

Hey Ed, Sync speed was one of my concerns, but honestly I sent so many years shooting with film cameras with 1/60 sec sync speed if all I can get is 1/125sec I'll live with it. I'll let you know what I find out though.
You anywhere close to Winder? Just curious.

Very well done. My eye's are drawn to her finger tips so I might have shown more of her hand or none at all, but I don't think that really takes anything away from the photo.
As far as the crop, if it was me I might not have made the smoke so tall. So as I used to tell my barber before I lost all of my hair (three ex- wives), a little off the top.
Great work!

I agree #1 is classic. I don't see how it could be any better than that. All of them are keepers. Very nice!!!

Well, I did it. After a couple weeks of mulling it over I bought a set of Alzo triggers off craigslist. I had all but pushed the pay now button on the CyberSyncs when I found the Alzos on CL for $50.00 bucks.
I haven't done any real testing other than a few shots to make sure that they worked, but I will give them a good workout this weekend at the Eco-Adventure in Athens, GA.. (Once a year the sponsers let me pretend that I'm a real photographer.) I'll do a mini review later.

I like sweet Italian sausage, smoked oysters, and pineapple on mine. Marc, your answer had about as much to do with the OP’s question as pizza has to do with road apples.

I think twitch hit the nail square on the head. I would say that the problem (If there really is one) Is about 1/3 lens and 2/3 photographer. I mean no insult, but consider that you have used the least desirable settings with a lens thats not known for it's steller performance. Plus the harsh light. I won't comment on the composition because I can only guess at your intention.
Bottom line, with the lens you had, the settings you used, and the lighting conditions...I think you did about as well as could be expected.
