Some beginners questions regarding Astrotracer and INT shooting :-)

To expand on the previous answer.

With exposures over 30seconds the camera takes two exposures, one normal and one "dark" frame which is an exposure of the same length as the normal exposure but without opening the shutter. This frame therefore consists of the sensor noise only and the camera then subtracts this from the normal frame to reduce the noise in the exposure.

Therefore exposures seem to be twice as long as you set.

If you do not intend to do any post-processing with your own dark frames or any other form of noise reduction then you want to leave this switched on so that the camera does the work for you.

If you are taking a long sequence of exposures that you intend to further process or stack then you want to turn it off and do your own sensor noise reduction

I no longer have the SA 2i.

However I seem to recall that the times are cumulative. So to get a 5 second exposure followed by a 4 second interval you need to set a 5 second exposure and a 9 second interval

I have also been looking at astrophotograpy for a lockdown activity. I have the same set-up as you (K-70 with 55-300mm zoom and O-GPS unit).

I have had a similar experience as can be seen in the photo below. I have also managed Milky Way photographs from an urban garden with lots of light pollution.

Can I add a couple of findings:

1. Astrotracer only works properly in BULB mode, in this mode the built in K-70 Interval timer does not work properly. Therefore I had to purchase a cheap external timer to get the flexibility I wanted. Link here. However there is some slight interaction between this and the operation of the shutter/memory card writing meaning some short exposure times with short intervals are not possible. However the overall interval timing works, my picture below is 90 x 6 second exposures stacked.

2. Focussing is a real issue. The Live View zoom function works but seeing the stars amongst the noise on the LCD display is challenging. A Bahtinov Mask mask helps but is not perfect.

3. Remove ALL glass from the front of the lens (UV filters etc.) I had not realised the softening effect my UV filter is giving. Ok so its a cheap one but taking off all glass raised the game.

4. Switch off all noise/shake reductions, let this be sorted in post processing instead.

5. Mirror lock. Again in BULB mode with an external timer mirror lock is not particularly straight forward. Therefore I use the 2 second self timer mode and have to add 2 seconds per exposure on the timer, e.g for a 4 second exposure with a 2 second shutter delay set the external exposure timer to 6 seconds.

6. Look at all the various videos on "astrophotography with a DLSR", there is a wealth of information on extracting these images from the raw camera image.

7. When the battery is low in the O-GPS it doesnt start flashing the low battery warning early enough, instead the astrotracing icon on the camera screen disappears and you are left wondering whats wrong as the O-GPS seems to be working.

You don't need to realign as the stacking software does it for you, although a sneaky tweak on the tripod halfway through helps. Just to be clear, this is a process and not a simple photograph.

Take a look at this video

You Tube

- the video is VERY LONG but details every step needed and you can just follow the steps like I did.

This is what the stacked, but unprocessed picture looks like, you can JUST see the galaxy in the middle of the picture if you look hard

Cured the issue without intending to.

I was playing around and for some reason decided to load onto the Astroberry the "ImageMagick" package so I could do some editing locally on the Raspberry Pi of images. After loading this, all strange colour casts disappeared from the captured images. Therefore I can only assume that loading ImageMagick updated or changed in some way a library file used to create/decode images and the problem was solved.

Pentax K-70 and Skywatcher StarAdventurer (and derivatives)

I have just purchased a SkyWatcher StarAdventurer 2i to enhance my astrophotography. I already have a remote timer and, of course, the K-70 has lots of timer options built in which I had intended to use.. However the StarAdventurer can control the camera plus the camera/StarAdventurer combination can then be controlled from an App over WiFi.

Whilst owners of Canon, Nikon and Sony etc. are generally well catered for by device manufacturers, Skywatcher appear to have forgotten us Pentax owners. Therefore there is no connect cable available for Pentax.

I did a bit of research, looking at the wiring diagrams for Canon cameras and Pentax cameras. I realised that the early Canon cameras had effectively the same signals on the tip, ring and sleeve of the remote plug. Ok so the Pentax is actually tip, ring, ring, sleeve but the Internet advice is that the sleeve and adjacent ring should be shorted together making them one for the correct operation of the Pentax shutter anyway.

Therefore the only difference is that the Canon is a 2.5mm plug and the Pentax is a 3.5mm plug. I purchased the Skywatcher Canon R1C Cable and a 2.5mm to 3.5mm stereo adaptor (Stereo because it naturally shorts together the sleeve and adjacent ring) and IT WORKS! I now have a Skywatcher StarAdventurer controlling a Pentax camera!

I should add that in the settings menu on the camera you need to manually set the input port to Remote Control as it does not auto-detect with this cable.

Posting this here for future reference for someone. I
