Opinion on Colorization of old B&W photos or films

I haven't yet seen They Shall Not Grow Old but I look forward to doing so. The clips I've watched online are amazing, not only showing the true potential of the technology but demonstrating its appropriate use. But like anything else, just because one can do something doesn't mean it should be done in all cases. Many photographers and film directors optimize their images to take maximum advantage of the monochromatic medium. Colorizing such still or moving images would indeed have the potential to compromise their artistic integrity, especially when it is done sloppily and with a severely limited color palate as it often was in the '80s. I remember watching a colorized version of It's a Wonderful Life on TV back in the late '80s and after about ten minutes, I had to get up and turn the color saturation all the way down on the TV set. It made me respect what Orson Welles is reported to have said regarding Citizen Kane shortly before his passing: "Don't let Ted Turner near my masterpiece with his crayons!" And he was exactly right, not only about that movie but also his film noir classic, The Third Man, which makes heavy use contrast and shadow to set the mood. Any attempt to inject color into either of those films, which were never meant to have it, would absolutely ruin them. By the same token, could you imagine the original Twilight Zone in color? Black and white is part of what makes these things work.

Nice sunset at the house yesterday. Three exposure HDR using Google Nik... which is one reason I can't totally leave Windows and LR behind for Linux/RawTherapee, etc. I really like SilverEfex Pro and HDR Efex.

And sometimes when you're HDR'ing you don't mess around. You really gotta HDR. :)

"Can a $100 Pentax beat a Nikon D810?" - Image Averaging, Stacking, and Panoramas

Titles are generally just click bait. If you don't give your video a somewhat inflammatory title, no one will watch it. Of course we know which is better. Tony Northup knows too.

The question is if you can only afford an older camera body and lenses, can you still produce high quality images? The answer to the question is clearly yes. I shoot a lot with a K-1 and I wouldn't like to go back to, say, using a K7, for a number of reasons, but if I had to, I would still take photos and do the best I could with what I had.

hmm interesting, i personally think that you either have the eye for a good shot or not, no amount of jiggery pokery will rescue a bad picture, so personally feel a good photographer with a cheap camera will outshine a bad photographer with an expensive one, ian

At slow shutter speeds, SR with monopod sounds like a good option, I have tested and compared the combination. Your mileage may vary.

I shoot sports with the DA* 60-250 and a Vanguard VEO AM-264-TR monopod and travel with HD DA Limiteds and a Veo AM-324 monopod. SR is always utilized. A monopod adds some stability but not complete stability.

Good question but overall I would leave SR on with a monopod. With a tripod and the camera completely still, SR is only going to self-induce blur. But with a monopod, you're still panning from side to side and tilting a bit up and down ever so slightly. The ultimate answer would be to run tests comparing with and without SR on a monopod.

A GR or a Fujifilm X-100 series, would really make sense, especially in the size and the leaf shutter department.

There really is something about film over digital, I knew it was film straight away before reading your info.

Black & White Snow

Thank you for your comment.

My college days were bracketed by the two significant 'weather events' of the 20th Century in this area.

On Palm Sunday 1965, I sat at a desk in our basement composing on a manual typewriter with a row of candles ready to be lit if the power failed, because my senior {H.S.} English paper was due the next day, and my admittance to Purdue U. was contingent on that.

December 1977, I finally finished grad school and moved back in with my parents while job hunting - just in time for the blizzard.

Today, local weathermen, perhaps born after 1978, will say things like "We have a danger of tornadoes tomorrow, but nothing like the Palm Sunday storm" or "We have a blizzard warning for tomorrow, but nothing like 1978."

In 1978 I was staying with my parents while job hunting when a blizzard passed through town - actually it took almost two whole days to come-and-go, but it dropped 48" of snow in the process. As the storm tailed off, my mother sent me to a local store to get some milk {after calling around she discovered this small store was open because the lady running it had stayed too long}. Even during the storm, the city had plow trucks running to keep the main roads sort of open. As usual, I took a camera with me, and this is one of the photos I took then.

The ruins of an old monastic settlement which was founded in the 6th century and abandoned in the early 12th century. There are three of these high crosses in the site, as well as the remains of a round tower. The carvings on the crosses are representations of bible stories.
A fascinating place, and the site is still used as a cemetery to this day.

Coming Back to Pentax

I started my plunge into photography many years ago with the Pentax Kx, then bought a K20D. I used these cameras for years, but then the "bigger is better" bug hit and I bought my first full frame, a Nikon D600.

Years have passed, I got deeply into film, namely large format and medium format, even wet plate.

A few months ago, I saved up enough to get another Pentax, a 645D (bigger is better right? :o). I am in LOVE with the CCD and files it creates.

Now, just this week I have come full circle and ordered a used K-1 from KEH. It will be here tomorrow.

I still have a lot of my favorite Takumar lenses from my early days with the Kx and K20D. I can't wait to start using them again, along with having IBS and using all the bells and whistles on my new (to me) Pentax.

action setting w k-30

If she is getting blur when in the action scene mode, increasing ISO would probably be the simplest solution. The program is apparently unable to provide an adequately high shutter speed under the lighting conditions present. However, I agree that the Tv mode would be her best option, in addition to adjusting ISO to get the shutter speed she needs.
