Today is the 129th anniversary of the opening of the City & South London Railway - the world's first deep-level, tube railway. Most of that railway now forms part of the Northern Line on the London Underground system and still sees heavy use every day. This picture shows Clapham Common station, which opened when the line was extended in 1900 (two world wars ago!).
It is because of the age of the system that there are two still stations like this, where train runs either side of a narrow, island platform. It gets very crowded in busy times. There were other stations like this, but they have been rebuilt with separate, larger spaces for trains in each direction for reasons of safety and comfort. I wonder how much longer this one will survive in this form...
Hand-held shot, taken with 645Z and 28-45mm f4.5 lens @ 45mm using ISO 6400. It's a composite in order to position the two trains exactly where I wanted them.

We recently rented an RV and spent a couple of days at Lake Mead in Southern Nevada (near our house) just above the Hoover Dam. We'd never done this before and it was kind of a test run. It was my first real chance to put my 645z through the paces. I'm still getting used to it but did come away with some nice shots.
This is a sunrise panorama shot with an 80-160mm, 5 shots stitched. I did a 36" wide acrylic of this and it came out amazing. 130mm, f/9, ISO 100, 1/3 second.
I wanted to get a campfire shot under the stars. Not my best night sky shot, but not bad. I'm used to shooting different ISO's and shutter speeds for this kind of shot so using the 45-85mm was kind of different. I still liked the way it came out. 45mm, f/4.5, ISO 400, 8 seconds.
The next morning the storm clouds rolled in and I got this one. 65mm, f/11, ISO 200, 1/50th second. |

The tower of the General Post Office (GPO) in Martin Place, Sydney, Australia. Seen by twilight from an adjacent building, providing a somewhat unusual perspective.
The GPO has an interesting history. Construction started in 1866, but wasn't completed until 1891. Despite some controversies associated with its design, it has long been hailed as a triumph of architecture and culture in Australia. It served as the headquarters of the Australian Post Office until 1996. Sydneysiders have long been proud of the building, which towered over the surrounding area (and indeed was visible for many miles around) until the city became high-rise in the last half century, robbing it of its prominence.
Because of its visibility and recognisability, the tower you see in this picture was carefully disassembled in 1942 lest it provide assistance to enemy air attacks and wasn't rebuilt until after the war.
The building these days is a blend of history and modernity, with the façade preserved but the interior significantly redeveloped to provide a hotel, cafés and the like.

Wrote a bit too soon -- a clearing front soon came into view. The light also prettified some ornamental grass. (645Z, conditions as above) These were taken in a hurry, hand-held, with shake reduction on, and it seems to be doing the job. I think I'm going to like the 90 D FA macro. Greater care in composition and parameter setting will, of course, yield improvements.

Recently had a trip to San Francisco, during which I met up again with my friend, the wonderful Mike Oria. My thanks to him, as ever, for his company and his generous advice about the area/locations.
Time has been short for editing/processing, so I'll share pictures as the opportunity arises. To start off, though, here are a couple...
