Leica m39 crew type lens on the pentax 645

Wouldn't reversing the lens make it even more of a macro? Right now with the 4x increased distance to the sensor the total field of view that can be focused is smaller than a tennis ball. The lens is manual, no auto settings.

My lens has the Leica M39 mount, but it is a Canon lens. Maybe the M45 lens is a M45 mount? I didn't see the ebay posting for $100 but did see some in the $800 range.

Unfortunately there's a small knob on the focus ring of the lens that prevents it from being screwed into the adapter backwards, from the inside of the adapter. I have no idea how that would have worked but it was worth a try.

Here's three shots and one of the 645Z with a Nikon SB26 speedlight and the M39 lens with adapter. The pics were taken handheld.

There's one of a quarter, one of a dime and one of a mummified spider.

The one of the dime is not in focus on the top half, but I posted it because I never realized that FDR on the dime had teeth, but can see them clearly here.

The spider I found under a cabinet. The paper it is on has lines, which are 1/4" apart, to set the scale.

Yes to both of those. Plus the reduced weight makes it easier to hold. I just ordered a new adapter from Fotodiox for about $18 less due to a black Friday sale. Amazon should process my refund on the first adapter withing a week or two. I'll post my efforts when I get the new adapter.

Not there yet because Amazon sent me the pentax 67 adapter rather than the pentax 645 adapter. I have to return that adapter and then when I get my refund order the correct adapter. This time I'll go through Fotodiox direct.

But I did try to take a macro pic by holding the adapter up to the 645 (it's bigger than the camera opening), and take a shot with the lens wide open to f1.8. I'm thinking I can do better with the right adapter, a tripod and trying different f-stops. At least I got an image which I wan't sure I would be able to get.

The first image (the blue sandisk card) is with the M39 lens and adapter. f 1.8, 1/50 sec. iso-100, handheld, illumination is a 60 watt equiv. desk lamp.

The second image (the gold sandisk card) is with the Pentax 645 SMC 120mm macro lens. f4.0 , 1/50 sec. iso-100, handheld, illumination is a 60 watt equiv. desk lamp.

The third image is a comparison of the two lens sizes.

I'll post another image when I get the new adapter.

Thank you Torashi and Ontarian50. It should be interesting. I will get the lens from Japan in a couple of weeks, and the adapter should be here by then. I will post my results here.

Thanks for the reference to the table. Maybe you can help me deciper it. The lens I ordered is an LTM lens. On the chart it lists the same pitch and TPI as the visoflex lens, therefore the visoflex adapter. The only difference is the FFD. For the LTM lens I ordered it is 28.8mm, but for visoflex lens the adapter is made for the FFD is 91.3 mm. Does that mean the LTM lens will be about 2-1/2 inches further away from the sensor than it should be? Would that render any sort of focusing impossible?

Thanks for that info! So worst case I can exchange the adapter and use the lens on my Q, even if it doesn't focus at all on my 645Z.

Thanks all for the comments. Seems the adapter I ordered is for the visoflex m39 lens to mount on a 645, but the lens I ordered was a Canon m39 lens, not the same as the visoflex M39. I'm not hopeful and I guess I lost some money unless I can return the items. The visoflex lenses are as expensive as Pentax 645 film lenses, and none of the visoflex lenses are a fast f1.8 like the Canon m39 I ordered.

It has come to my attention that fotodiox sells an M39 screw type lens to pentax645 mount adapter. Also the Leica m45 50mm f1.8 lens sells for less than $100 on ebay. It doesn't seem intuitive as the m39 lens is a small rangefinder lens. On the other hand it was for a 35mm camera. I'm very tempted to buy this combination to have a f1.8 50mm lens for my 645. Anyone have any thoughts?

First you have to save the image to your desktop. Right click/save image as/ select location to save. I generally save to desktop so it's easy to find. Once the image icon is on the desktop, right click the icon/properties/ shows:Pentax 645D, 1/125 sec., iso-400, focal length 75mm, center weighted average metering mode, no flash, aperture priority.

It came out like a gold coin. I don't know why. I could have changed the color, but thought it looked kind of cool.

Anyone shooting video with their 645Z?

I have been exploring the moire issue on the 645Z for a couple of days and this is what i came up with. First, none of the methods to remove or reduce video moire in post seemed acceptable to me as when they worked they all resulted in reducing the sharpness of the video image, and often still did not work. The lack of an AA filter on the Z is what gives it the extra sharpness, and also makes it more susceptible to moire.

What does seem to help though, besides avoiding moire producing subjects, was to go into the video settings for exposure and set it to manual exposure in video, then reduce my shutter speed to 1/30 of a second and open the lens as wide as it goes, and pan slowly. Although it violates the shutter speed should be 2x fps rule, I have often shot at slower shutter speeds and have not noticed issues with doing so.

I did keep the movie SR on while panning handheld. Although it seems contrary to normal practice, it also may be possible that keeping SR on while on a tripod may also reduce moire by introucing micro vibrations, On my music video above I did have movie SR on as far as I recall, and it did no harm.

Would welcome any comments from those who are using video on the Z. I know the popular view is you can get better video on another dslr or a BMPCC, but my feeling is that no other video has the Z color quality. It barely needs any color grading when shot in the Landscape mode.

Flash didn't fire on this as I accidentally had the shutter speed at 1/160 and my Nikon B26 speedlight only fires on the 645Z at 1/125 of a sec. or slower. I had heard about the Z's ability to recover details from underexposed raw shots, but on this one the thumbnail was completely black. But pocessing the .dng file in Photoshop brought out quite a few details. 645Z, iso-100, f32, 1/160 sec. Pentax -A 645 Macro 120mm f4.

True. I guess it depends on what you are shooting and if the camera is panning. Here's a link to my first video, the sequence on the right of the screen was shot with the Z and a manual 35mm lens, the sequence on the left with a Nikon D5000 and kit lens. My performance wasn't that great but the Z performed well. There are some moire removal videos on youtube which I will try and see how they work with the cd cabinet seuence.

The colors were all spot on. The only processing I did was to add a bit of darkness to my face complexion as I looked a bit pale. The light behind me is from a window with closed white blinds and a sheer curtain.

Heres the link to the video. My part is on the right side of the screen, my friend's part on the left.

Single frame of 1920x1080 HD unprocessed video from the Pentax 645Z. Used the Pentax 645 manual 35mm lens. I find the video has all the same color attributes of the still pics. Scene was lit with daylight from two windows and three 22W (150W equivvalent) soft white LED bulbs in one desk lamp and two floor lamps. The video feature is why I chose the Pentax 645Z over any othe MF camea.

Thank you posters for your answers. I believe I'm good for now. On ebay I ordered the Pentax 645 35mm f3.5 for $350 for wide angle and the 200mm f4 for $75 for closeups. Along with the 55mm f2.8 autofocus I already have, these lenses should meet my needs for quite a while. This is pretty much the range of my existing Mamiya lenses. I can fill in the gaps by zooming in and out with my feet.

I'm excited to be shooting video with these lenses. The 645Z colors and look in video are really beautiful. Reminds me of Technicolor.
