Hello Des! The attraction of shooting at sea is there are still plenty of sea birds that have not been photographed that well at sea .. plenty of shots of them nesting and on land but not in flight. Though I'm very much a prime man, I CAN see the logic in getting a very good zoom that allows you to fill most of the frame with, for example, petrels following a ship but then zoom out if birds land ON the ship or fly over it for some time or, as boobies and gannets often do ... just track alongside the boat waiting for the bow to disturb flying fish. On the K-1, the results from the using the RMC Tokina 400mm on a tripod and the Pixel Shift and HDR functions is pleasing producing perfectly nice pics. I'm not sure I see nearly a grand's difference between shots from a Sigma AF 2.8 APO and the Tokina though the Sigma is better but MUCH heavier and bigger ... in many respects, for travelling the Tokina is way better. Thanks for your reply ....

I have seen 560mm used for sale at about 2,300 quid... since optically they're excellent and bearing in mind with a FF sensor if you want to fill the sensor with a nice crisp image you have to pretty much have that kind of focal length, I still think I am aiming for that but I am often working on ships and trying to get rare shots of birds that spend most of their lives at sea and it remains to be seen if a 560mm is just too unwieldy to use on a moving object from a moving platform. Quite a few "birds in flight| photographers are sticking with APC-S senspor bodies shooting with 300mm f2.8 lenses that give the 35mm equivalent of 480mm. I had a similar set up and found I still failed to get enough of most birds on shots. 560mm might just make that difference. Now and then, a Masked Booby, Gannet or Petrel would obligingly come near enough to the boat but Leech's Petrels etc were like bats between the waves ... big birds, faily close to a ship, with a 300mm and an APS-C sensor body, you can get some fab shots filling the frame

Good points Des ... I can also see the 560mm being useful in stable conditions like bird hides ... but I'll look at your suggestion ... it could be a better option especially since there are issues with taking the 560mm as carry on luggage because it's just too big!!

Thanks for all these comments. I have the same thoughts about sharpening in post but I don't think that many people pixel peep over other peoples' shots as much as the photographers themselves might pixel peep over their own shots. When you have seen nice shots from a more expensive lense, you aspire to retaining that quality (as I said, I very happily used a Sigma 300mm f2.8 APO with an APC sensor Nikon D3300). I WILL get a better lense for my pentax. It will be a prime, probably manual focus ... I DO like sharpening RAW files since it DOES bring out detail (don't know how it does it).

Anyway, all I really wanted to say is that, in terms of bang for your buck, a clean one of these lenses or one that superceded this one is perfectly usable, in my humble opinion ... but I will probably get the 560mm Pentax next year ... and use it to death!

I'm very impressed with a KA mount Tamron SP 90mm f2.8 Di AF I just bought in Gibraltar and know of a DA* 300mm for sale used BUT I want more than 300mm ... I want to be able to fill the frame with content ..... the 560mm is expensive but I will probably live long enough to get value out of it

though, from what I heard, the K3s and K5s are fab cameras. If you sharpen the shots from the RMC Tokina 400mm in PP, does the human brain know it's been conned? I'm torn between thinking I'm taking perfectly OK shots with a $60 lense and wanting the security of knowing that if I'm using great gear and the pics are duff, the problem is me. Using nice gear is great but the sad fact is that there's not much about for Pentax

Since I am not finding loads of great deals on PK mount, used, super telephoto primes ... I have been using an RMC Tokina 400mm f5.6 since about July and, even though it's not as nice as the Sigma f2.8 300mm APO I was using with my Nikon D3300 until about April, if treated with respect, the RMC Tokina is capable of some OK shots. I uploaded a couple to an album in case anyone faces the same problem I have ... no great options when it comes to used Pentax telephotos for sale nearby. What a sensible thread. In the UK Chinon was distributed by a chain of shops and was not found in regular camera shops yet when I went to the Middle East, you saw Chinon billboards along with Pentax, Konica etc.. I have some brilliant Chinon binoculars. Anyway, Chinon stuff can be got cheap in the UK so if you're visiting, grab some bargains. I have Chinon zoom 75-200 f4-4.5, 50mm f1.9 and a 500mm t mount f8 mirror lense, an M42 35mm. It's interesting how different brands thrived in different markets. The Germans seem to LOVE Pentax gear and they know LOADS about optics

The A series lenses have some gems amongst them and if you find them cheap, get therm. I use a 70-210 A series macro zoom SMC which, so long as you use a tripod and stop it down to f8-11 produces results so sharp it avoids changing prime lenses and missing shots as a result .. I have an M series 135mm f3.5 which also behaves very well ... I even gave a Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f3.5 a run out on my K-1 the other day and .... well, the results are lovely. There are some lovely new lenses but, a bit like vinyl never really dying, some old lenses have a certain something you can't put your finger on .. they may not be as sharp as some newer primes and may have a few kinks but ... they can produce some lovely results

For years, people have been shooting through lenses like this wide open so it's an easy way to get pics with a classic look with huge aperture and useful bokeh. For some shoots, an f1.4 lense, close in, set to wide open is a pretty reliable formula. Finding any lenses like this is becoming a pain. I got this one about 8 years ago when everyone thought such gear as 50mm primes had no future and 6.3 megapixel DSLRs and kit lenses were the bees knees ..... I kept my primes because I knew they took nice pics and had some tricks up their sleeves. Kit zooms don't do the DOF tricks a 1.4 delivers

---------- Post added 06-05-18 at 02:53 PM ----------

Thanks Adam .... just natural light and an f1.4 50mm wide open. Any dog will look useful eventually once they get bored of wondering what the camera is. Flashes freak animals out so it has to be natural light.

Shows the lense in a good light. Have you cropped this or were you on a boat shooting at 250mm? Nice and sharp. Good shot.

I notice this was shot with a 150-500mm zoom. Was the photo shot at 200mm? If so, it's a good example of how some subjects don't need huge zooms as this Heron is not far from filling the frame with its wing span. It's amazing what a sweet f4 200mm prime can deliver. I just sold a 300mm f2,8 Sigma APO prime which is a lovely lense (for Nikon ... not likely to get used now I'm back to FF Pentax and my legacy prime lenses). Capturing birds in flight is a black art and addictive ... you are always CERTAIN there's a better shot to be had. Nice pic. There's a lot to be said for knowing the places where you CAN get closer to birds. Near where I am from is a place called Bempton Cliffs and you can have Gannets filling the viewfinder with a 135mm prime they;re so close

Both 800th of a sec at f5.6? Can't see much difference and maybe with a steady camera at 800th of a sec, you wouldn't notice too much difference. Next time, try using the shake reduction to let you have access to f8. See if it sharpens the image giving more DOF.

Ahhh ... found this ... working out how these forums work. Cosina make some great lenses under the Voigtlander and Zeiss brands and I'll shoot anything that will go on the front of my K-1 (which I love) ... making the most of this one at f1.4. Not my dog but he has character. Thank you for the very kind comments

Cost it. How much will it cost you to do the job? Is he happy to pay you by the hour? Some people are doing these jobs quite cheaply from what I've heard.
