I am having the exact same problem with my K-500. It is intermittent, and independent of the lens I use. There is also an ISO issue (higher ISO gives me purple hue) - it started with infrequent corruption in images and now becoming more and more common. Using Tamron 18-250 mm lens and also tried Pentax DA 50 mm prime. No difference. Some images for example...

I managed to use a "hard" LCD screen protector as a replacement to cracked LCD cover. Used hair dryer heat to mellow the glue tape on the edge, tiny screw driver and guitar pick/plastic lever to lift the edge of the broken cover and pry it open, 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean the LCD inside (not necessary if dry wipe with a lint free cloth works), and dremel rotating file to trim the bottom edge of the LCD screen protector so that it fits in the LCD cover socket. The LCD screen protector came with the glue on the edge, so I didn't need to add a new double sided tape after removing gunks and pieces of old tape and cleaning the LCD cover socket. The filed bottom edge also had some glue left, so I didn't bother putting any additional tape even at the bottom. The LCD screen protector, although thinner and flimsier than the original cover, fits well and looks great (except the white line on the edge). I am just glad I could replace it myself within an hour or so. Thanks @Ellsworth for referring me to the thread! Pentax never responded to my two queries and after waiting for a couple of weeks I just went ahead with using this LCD screen protector that I bought from Ebay for 20 bucks. Mock-up pictures and the picture of all the things I used for this project are attached (I didn't take pics during the real action, sorry! and used Galaxy S9 to take this pictures which I thought are pretty good!)

YOU ARE THE MAN @ELLSWORTH! Took me 5 minutes to fix the lens. Only had to move the rubber grip partially to expose the screw, tightened it up and BAM, back in business! (unfortunately I was so excited, I then left my K-500 on a top shelf and it dropped by itself to have a cracked screen protector plastic - no major damage and camera works fine, i just have to make sure the screen doesn't touch any water - bummer!) |

Thanks @Ellsworth - I had the same problem this weekend - In the hindsight, yes the lens was randomly locking/feeling hard to zoom every now and then lately, so that is encouraging given the symptoms you described! I will give your fix suggestion a shot tonight - you said the lens broke during airshow? I might be carrying my K-500 and the Tamron lens in the same airshow at CHS-AFB then! Will keep you posted with my updates on the fix :-)
