Tells a story, good framing and looks good without excessive contrast. Many other entries were using too much black.

Hello -
I haven't posted anything for ages, but just voted in the last monthly contest.
This image was fun to take at the time and the focal length was 200mm.
The setup is actually a joke, the fisherman is apparently a mannequin. But even at the distance the photo shows, you'd think he was real.
It was a beautiful day, and yes people do fish in that river, for salmon.

As usual there are multiple 'winner quality images'.
But I like the simplicity and apparent compression of this one. You feel the closed-in weather, good job.

Has the feel of Jags. Makes me think of the E Type, one of the most beautiful cars ever.
Nostalgia.
Good use of light too.

Hello angkymac and UncleVanya - I'll keep in mind your observations on the delicate internal of that SMC-A 70-210 1:4 lens.
Also a couple of points I thought of later... in fact perhaps all this should be in the lens review section. But again, I'm not using Pentax camera. I just like the community and the excellent artistic work.
Now what I noticed is that zooming is internal which helps the balance on a tripod, and my copy does not 'creep'. However focusing does change the length of the inner lens barrel and it rotates.
So the rotation would be an annoyance with circular polarizing filters. You'd think lens breathing would be severe but it doesn't seem to be! Still a great lens, I only count the rotation as a con.
Cheers, C.

Hi -
OK, a second lens test in two days, a photo taken of my pear tree.
My motivation is to re-purpose a lens or two for a new camera, which did come with one kit zoom.
This is a classic 1980s SMC Pentax zoom lens, and I am lucky to have a mint copy. I had used it for astronomy, with a Tamron SP 2x extender.
The sample image is a close up at the 210mm setting, not macro as I wanted to frame things a little.
The only 'con' I'd note is that the lens is fairly heavy, when compared to today's plastic composite ones.
Some things that I can explain:
First there is an 'A' setting, of importance to Pentaxians, and a small macro range.
It is a 'reverse trombone' zoom, and why more designs don't extend from the longest focal length I don't know. Do you reach for a lens like this to use at 70mm?
Settings are pretty much parfocal in my trials hand held, and all focal lengths in the range are sharp. That's how they were made back in the day. :)
To quote Bob Seeger they were built solidly,'like a rock' or like a Nikkor.
Regards, C.

Thank you. This wasn't the wide open shot, it was f11 but that doesn't matter. I'll be posting a sample of my SMC-A zoom next. ; )

Hi -
This was a lens test, but since my neighbour washes his truck more than I do mine, it looks good! I haven't posted anything for a long while.
The lens is one of my classic Pentax mount ones, much praised on pentaxforums, which is why I bought it some time ago. Focus is silky smooth, so who made these?
Should you come across a good copy you could do worse than buy it, keeping in mind this is strictly a manual lens. It's light and pocketable.
I wished to see if the lens would hold up to a high resolution camera, and it does (wide open it is also sharp). I'll test a Pentax SMC-A zoom that way next.
There are no Pentax or even reflex cameras in my arsenal, other than my old Hasselblad film camera. I found that I liked the new mirrorless (c.s.c.) models.
But I do like not just the quality of vintage lenses, but Pentax colour. This lens is similar, and the image is SOC other than an exposure tweak.
By the way I saw some mention of Irix lenses, the Swiss/Korean company. And I have the 15mm f2.4, can assure you it's a fine lens of course available for Pentax.
Cheers, C.

Pentax photographers outdo themselves each month.
I give this a nod for the artistic treatment in B&W, and for the history.

Good entries again. This one makes me think of time scales. Our societies exist on a short time scale.
Also I missed the comet. This view is beautiful.

This is the right contest for my user name!

N.B.: a tip: Sadly, a few entries had skewed horizons. I didn't 'buy' artistry in that, nor do most judges.
Otherwise there should be an obvious reason.

Hi -
Thank you for this!
I have over a certain amount of time much enjoyed being part of this forum, focused as it is on picture taking.
For haggling over brands there is dpreview. No particular need for such arguments all over the enthusiast community.
Actually I am primarily a Sony shooter these days, after previously leaning towards the K1 Pentax series, also good cameras.
I've kept my small collection of classic Pentax lenses which work with adapters. My first 'good' camera was a manual film Nikon.
However I like to return and vote on the monthly contest submissions, and am in awe of the many talented people out there.
Indeed please stay civil, so this site will remain as much fun as it has been. Thanks.
Cheers, C.

Hi -
This does return the feeling of old vehicles, just before my time. Makes me think of 1940s Buicks or a car museum.

I would have liked to see more abstracts from nature than are in these entries.

'Hanging Out'
Hi !
Here's a photo that I still find amusing, taken March 1st, 2020.
A group of pigeons was together, shooting the breeze I guess.
Shot in RAW and converted to black and white square format in Capture One (?)
I was trying out several editors at the time.
The 'old' lens - classic lens - is one recommended on Pentax Forums lens reviews as sharp. It is!
The angle is '202mm equivalent' on APS-C of course, really handy for 'thinking different' landscapes.
Cheers, C.
