K3, K3ii, or K3iii for Second Body

Whether considered obsolete or not, the K3 is probably the best bang for the bucks out there and I'll be using mine until such time as it fails to operate! The K3 is entirely capable of doing what she is currently doing, especially since she is already using one and a second one as a backup makes a lot of sense to me. No menu changes, all accessories are compatible, and it's a pretty straight forward choice that would save a lot of money without lacking in performance. As long as the K3 is giving her the results she wants and needs, why spend a bunch of money? However, if the "Gas" syndrome for getting something new is unavoidable, I think I'd consider making the move to full frame rather than the newer crop frame camera. It's your choice, but the K3 is still a lot of camera and in the right hands it can produce remarkable photography. Good luck and good shooting to all.

I think a K3 should be a likely choice, I think it's one of their finest DLSR's of all time.

Full-frame vs. cropped lenses on APS-C camera

I haven't yet read all the responses to this initial post, but will as time permits. However, your statement that "The total number of pixels that a lens projects onto a ASP-C sensor is going to be 1.5 time less" is drastically flawed. The lens projects an optical image, which is in no way digital at that point, and the number of pixels in an image capture is completely dictated by the sensor's pixel density regardless of the size of the sensor. You also state that using a full frame lens on an ASP-C sensor is an awful idea, since only the center of the lens would be used, then go on to contradict that statement by later saying that I appreciate that a cropped sensor would benefit from using only the center of an FF lens. Athough some lenses do resolve their images better than others, virtually all of them are best at the center and most distortions occur around the edges. So your point here is not only contradictory, but deeply flawed and I'm not sure just what your trying to do with this post. You obviously have too much time on your hands!

KP today or K3iii in a month?

I'd just keep and use my K3 (I love that camera) over a new KP. However, the articulated screen on the KP is a really nice feature and the price for the KP is attractive as well. Frankly, the fact that the new K3III does not have the articulated screen will most probably keep me from updating to that body in the future. My K3 may end up being the last serious camera I ever purchase! However, I am tempted to get a high performance travel compact and have been looking at them for some time now. I just can't seem to pull the trigger on one due to the price and the limited zoom range options on the larger sensors. Good luck and good shooting to all.

I'll put in my vote for JB Weld as well. However, I don't think gluing is going to hold long term with any glue and at some point the joint will fail.

I have what I call the "Engineering Gene" and I've made a good living using it to my best advantage over my lifetime. Frankly, I am very good at understanding how things work and using the technical aspects of most anything including photography. However, I do have real difficulty with the creative/artistic part and have had to work very hard to improve in this area. As a counter note, I have a niece that is an excellent photographer, but she is more the artistic type. When we go out to shoot together, we often take photos of the very same things, but she sees them with different eyes and ends up with far better angles and compositions. Actually, we make a good pairing as I have often helped her with the technical aspects of her equipment and she in turn has tried to help me improve in the more artistic realms of photography. I personally think that the best photographers are the ones that have God given skills in both areas and that the original poster makes a good point here. Good luck and good shooting to all.

Is used equipment selling well?

Just wondering what percentage of the "New" price for a used item is a fair price for a used item? Obviously, condition does make a difference, but I think there is a certain reduction in price required just because the item is used regardless of it's condition. It's just like a new car that when driven off the lot loses probably 25% of it's book value. Most folks want to recover as much of their initial cost as possible and I don't blame them, however, I wouldn't even consider buying a used item that isn't at least 30% off the retail price of a new one and wonder what percentage others would consider reasonable for a new to used conversion? It might be a good rule of thumb and a good place to start for both seller and buyers. Frankly, listing a $600.00 body or lens for $550.00 is probably not going to get it sold!

I think there are a lot of folks looking for bargains on used gear online, but far fewer willing to pay a "reasonable price!" Craigslist for example has bargain priced items move in days if not hours, but equipment priced for what it should actually be worth just seems to sit there forever. If it's something very desirable, it can fetch a fair price, but it appears to be difficult to find takers. In any case, decide what you need to get for whatever your selling and hope for the best. However, if you need to move it quickly, your probably going to have to take quite a bit less than what it should be worth. Good luck and good shooting to all.

Being on a fixed income and a low budget, used Pentax equipment was a "No Brainer" for me. A couple years back, I purchased a used K3 body primarily due to the bang for the bucks and the fact that I already had older compatible lenses from my film days with the K-1000. The older lenses are manual focus, but otherwise they work quite well. The K3 does have weather seals, a full metal body, a real pentaprism viewfinder, an on camera flash, and many other useful features not normally available for the $400.00 I paid for it. I used my legacy lenses exclusively for about a year, then found a "WR" Pentax zoom lens for sale on Craigslist for $50.00 and snapped it up. This combo does a great job for me with my only possible complaint being the noise levels in low light photography above the 800 ISO setting. This is still manageable and I attribute it to the older sensor technology as compared to what is now available at 4 or 5 times the price. In any case, I now have $450.00 (not counting my legacy lenses) in the whole setup and have found the K3 to be a very capable tool at an exceptional valve for the price. I would recommend used Pentax equipment to anyone that wants quality equipment at an affordable price. Good luck and good shooting to all.

New GIMP user questions

I have "RawTheropy" previously installed separately, but will need to see if it can be installed as a plug-in for Gimp. It also sounds like "Darktable" might be a good choice and sounds as if it's worth a look. As stated, I am currently using RawTheropy to convert my .DNG files to .Tiff files and then import them into Gimp, but I'm still very new to this program and found it odd that a Raw File could not be directly imported. No big deal, but I do appreciate the input as to how others handle this situation. The previous poster says that he does his initial processing in RawTheropy then saves them as .PNG files to import into Gimp. This too might be an option as I am pretty familiar with RawTheropy, but I'm not sure that .PNG files are lossless and feel that it's important to move all the data into Gimp before processing there. Do .PNG files compress the data or are they too near lossless? Thanks for all the feedback!

Since GIMP apparently doesn't load the DNG files directly from my K3, what format or formats do you other users convert them to in order to process them in GIMP? I am assuming that .TIFF files would be appropriate since they are mostly lossless and that is a conversion I can do in "RawTherapee," but maybe there is a better way. Thanks in advance for any information you might provide on this subject.

A way to measure batteries or chargers?

The only way that battery capacity can be measured is under load! One could calculate an acceptable fixed resistance load by using Ohm's Law and solving for current, then put an ammeter in line with the circuit to monitor and time the discharge to calculate the Ampere/Hour capacity. However, I would not recommended this as these tests can be very hard on the battery due to the increased heat and the simple fact that this would be just one more charge/discharge cycle in the battery's overall lifetime performance (they all cycle only so many times and do wear out). Anyway as others have mentioned, a static voltage measurement does not indicate battery capacity. However, since most batteries are made up of multiple cells (the actual definition of a battery), a voltage measurement can show a weak or dead cell, which will keep the battery from fully charging and is generally the kiss of death for any battery pack.

My recommendation for maximum battery life would be to charge your batteries carefully, hopefully with a peak sensing charger, and hopefully being very careful not to charge too quickly, overcharge, or generate any real heat. Otherwise, I think decreased performance should be pretty noticeable and testing will probably only add to the problem. Good luck and good shooting to all.

On my K3 I see a big difference in 800 and 1600 ISO. Therefore, I try to keep it at 800 or less, but I'm not afraid to crank it up and do some extra post processing if it's the only way to get a shot. Good luck and good shooting to all.

Thanks to all for the advice! I too now think that it's probably a RAM issue and I hope to get some time later today to work with it more. I'll let you guys know if I figure this thing out. Good luck and good shooting to all.

Question for "Raw Therapee" users
Posted By Bison Bud

I have used "Raw Therapee" to edit the DNG files from my K3 for quite awhile now and found it to be adequate for my needs. However, it has recently developed an issue that is driving me nuts and I am hoping that someone here might have experienced something similar or have suggestions on how to fix the problem. Anyway, it has recently developed a very long delay between moving any of the sliders and then seeing the result of doing so. This delay is now some 8 to 10 seconds and it used to be almost in sync with the sliders. This makes editing a very long and involved process now and very difficult to make fine adjustments.

I have tried many things to hopefully correct this issue, but nothing has had any effect so far. I have rebooted the computer repeatedly, Closed all other running programs, tried loading only a few files at a time to edit, cleared over 40 Gig of disk space and used disk cleanup and defrag tools, I've tried saving the edits to a different drive and even importing them from different locations on multiple drives both internal and external. After all that, I even uninstalled then reinstalled the entire program, but the problem is unchanged.

I am still using Windows 7 and fear that the computer might be the actual culprit here by running slow, but it's not really noticeable on any other program I use regularly and I'm not really ready yet to wipe the computer clean and start over or invest in another computer, but fear that this is probably going to be the ultimate solution. Therefore, I'd sure be interested in hearing from other "Raw Therapee" users and especially from anyone that has encountered similar issues with their work flow. Otherwise, I'm going to have to find another way to process my DNG files and I'm on a fixed income with a low budget for this sort of thing. Any help here would be deeply appreciated!
