Route 66 Kitsch

On a recent marching band trip to Oklahoma, we got the chance to check out a couple of Route 66 icons. I am a huge fan of the movie Cars and Route 66 lore so finding the Big Blue Whale in Catoosa, and the World's Largest Totem Pole in Foyil really made my day. Also shown is a chunk of the original Route 66 with its unique curb.

You do the same thing with your K100D in your spare time that I do with mine, only your shots are a whole lot better! Which lens are you using, what mode and are you shooting with and do you use manual or auto focus? I am dying to know because it gives me hope to see such great Sprint Car shots with the K100D after all the garbage I've managed to get and I would love to know how to do it better!

I especially love the shot of Jason Meyers after losing the wheel. What a ride that must have been! The ones of Donny Schatz and Paul McMahan are great too.

Would appreciate any help you can give. I tend to only get so-so shots even though I've been doing this for a couple of years. If you check out my web site, you will see what I mean.

The dust is a pain, isn't it? :)

Strat,
Have seen Elephant Rocks advertised for years but have never been. Now you're making me want to take a road trip.

Nice shots!

Is the stitch feature something in PhotoShop? I have Paint Shop Pro Photo and have not found it in there yet.

blwnr - I'm using a K100D with the kit 50-200 lens.

What tracks will you be shooting in Australia? I am the editor of a motorsports news site and we have a hard time getting photos from there. If you would be interested in seeing some of your work on line, please let me know. It doesn't pay, but it's kind of nice to see your work displayed and we always give credit for photos used.

Stratman, you stole my reply! :)

And yes, you do need to check out some local racing. We have several good tracks within a 100 mile radius of St. Louis. If you need any recommendations or directions, let me know.

As for the dust, some tracks are worse than others and that depends on how well the track was prepared and what the weather is like. I went to one race last year where I got only one or two decent shots because the camera kept focusing on the dust. I finally went to manual focus mode, but that didn't work all that well because of the way the cars slide up and down as they circle the track.

I clean my camera after each event, and have not had any problems so far, but that worry is always in the back of my mind. I know that dust is the enemy, so I just take all of the precautions I possibly can.

The other thing is, I usually only shoot practice, qualifying and maybe a few heats, besides my candids in the pits. The built-in flash is insufficient for shooting after dark so I hang it up, sit back and enjoy the show when the sun goes down. Since that is when the biggest groups of cars are on the track kicking up dirt, it helps that I can tuck the camera away at that point.

Photos from the USAC Silver Crown Series Ted Horn 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, DuQuoin, Illinois on September 2, 2007.

The first three are action shots, which are always fun. The last one is a candid shot of one of the drivers. I love taking those because of the emotion that many of these guys display. Before a race, it's all about concentration.

I have one more race to shoot this year and then it will be nothing but marching band and basketball. Still exciting when you're the parent of one of the musicians/players, but in a different way. :)

Winner of the race, Shane Cottle.

Dave Darland, who finished fourth.

Levi Jones in the Tony Stewart Racing car takes a practice lap.

Ron Gregory in a reflective mood before taking to the track.

daacon - I'm glad you like them and that they brought back some fond memories. My husband used to work in the aerospace industry (Boeing) and has always been a huge fan of fighter jets and other planes. I can't help but be awed by them myself.

Steve - I used my K100D with the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro lens. As far as I know, it was probably completely wrong for the job, but all of the camera jargon is completely foreign to me. I finally realized the other day just why understanding photography is so difficult for me: It's the numbers! I have always been averse to math of any kind, and the numbers in photography completely confound me! :)

I shot these today at the St. Louis Fair & Air Show. It may be the last year for these guys in St. Louis, which will really be a shame. They are simply amazing!

Tim,
Yep, they do it every couple of years and we've gotten to where we expect them now. It's awesome to be in the flight path!

Yesterday my son was practicing with the marching band at his high school when they went over. He said they were so low you could see the pilot's faces.

I will have a few more chances to get them this weekend, and with the weather we're having, the sky is a perfect blue backdrop.

Just missed getting them 4-wide over my neighbor's roof yesterday. The sound echo threw me off on their direction. :(

No critique is necessary on these, since, as photos go, these are not great. I was just so thrilled to hear them practicing overhead this afternoon that I ran out with my camera and got what I could.

The Blue Angels will be here in St. Louis all weekend, so hopefully, I will have better opportunities for pictures now that I know their practice schedule.

Enjoy!

I love Faust Park, especially the Butterfly house! Have yet to take my Pentax over there to shoot though, but now you have inspired me.

Beautiful photos. I really like those bullfrogs! Think one of them is named Jeremiah? :)

Great subject for a contest!

Here is my entry. The photo was taken on August 8, 2007 at Belle Clair Speedway in Belleville, Illinois, USA. It is a POWRi Series Midget driven by Brett Anderson. I used my Pentax K100D with the kit 50-200 lens. I like this shot because it turned out nice and clear and the bright orange car is really sharp!

Thanks Dave! I love shooting those cars. Probably not quite as thrilling as actually driving one, but it's about as close as I'll ever get. :)

Thanks to everyone for the comments/tips. I will be on the lookout for a new lens.

One of these days, I will actually read through the entire Magic Lantern book and understand all of the lingo about f stops, iso settings, etc. Until then, I just point, shoot and hope for the best!

Oh, and I will definitely watch out for runaway race cars! I have one more race to shoot Labor Day weekend, and then it will be nothing but marching band for the next three months. A little safer, yes, but somehow not quite as exciting.

I used the kit 50-200 zoom that came with my K100D for these. My guess is that I am maybe 30-40 feet away or so. Close enough to get a good shot, but far enough away to hopefully not get injured when they go flying! :)

(Oh, and thanks! I like the first and third ones best in this series myself.)

What is the point of Firmware?

Ok, I have heard this term tossed around here and on the board that supports my mp3 player but I really need to ask this question:

What is firmware, how does it work and do I need to update?

I had always assumed, until lately, that the software that came with my camera was for working with the photos, like Photoshop, which I don't need.

My guess now is that this disk contains firmware which is the camera's operating system, correct? I have all the software that came with my K100D but I have never done a thing with it. I have never connected my camera to my computer because I always just take out the SD card and slide it into the slot in my laptop.

So if my camera works fine, do I need to do something with this firmware?

Thanks to those of you who do not laugh at me for asking this! :)

Fences suck! :)

I just hate having to deal with them. Even with credentials, there are some tracks that are just plain hard to shoot at because the fences are just a big ol' pain. If there was a way to make those links just a little bit bigger so the lens would fit all the way through and allow for a bit of maneuvering, life would be grand!

Your shots really are fun though. I like the one that is just blurry pieces of the cars the best. Formula cars are tough because they go so darned fast that it is hard to time the sound with panning and shutter release. I shoot mostly on dirt, and it's a heck of a lot easier, but tough on equipment.

Hope you enjoyed yourselves, despite the heat!

The number 9 car is gorgeous too.

I am the Editor of a motorsports news site, and when we received press releases from Infineon about this event, I was very curious to see the different types of cars. Thanks for sharing! Great work!

Thank you. The last one is my favorite as well. I have an 8x10 on my basement office wall. My husband is just a bit jealous.

That's Country superstar Brad Paisley. We got our tickets on eBay two days before the concert, and sat just ten rows from the stage. It was a great show.

The others are Jack Ingram, 17-year-old Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler (from American Idol).

As for the roller derby comment, I can still skate, but I don't think I'm beefy enough to be a roller derby queen. :)

Hi Stratman! It's nice to see another St. Louisan on here. Is that a trout I see in your picture?

Thanks for the comments on the pics, even if you're not a country fan, that's ok. As for the "racin' chick" comment, well, I only wish I actually got to race rather than just writing about it and shooting it! Maybe one of these days...

I haven't visited here in a while but I have been practicing with my K100D and getting some decent results. Here are a few of shots from a recent Jack Ingram/Taylor Swift/Kellie Pickler/Brad Paisley concert here in St. Louis.
