How to use the Pentax AC adapter Kit on KP?

Ok, maybe not a stupid question but I feel kind of stupid now. The manual that came with the kit is kind of minimal "this is what it is for, it complies with CE safety, etc." and I didn't bother to look into the KPs manual because the usage seemed quite obvious... but no battery thingy needed!
Yes, you are both correct stevebrot and dbs! Just dump the dummy and use the power plug directly.

How to use the Pentax AC adapter Kit on KP?

This may seem like a mighty stupid question, but I don't seem to be able to use the AC (wall socket power) supply adapter kit on my Pentax KP? Kit 168 with dummy 128, as by the homepage compatible with K-70 and KP.

It seems easy enough: Replace Battery with Battery dummy that has a cable coming out its... hind section and plug that cable into a power supply like you have for a laptop for instance. However I tried a cheap "compatible" copy and now have the original Ricoh Kit in my hands and the Dummy won't stay "in". The little notch that usually locks the battery in place is located exactly where the dummy has the cut out for the cable and therefore the dummy always slides out the hatch about a centimeter, disconnecting the dummy from the camera.

Help?!

[/LIST]The thing about a tiltable screen is: You are not forced to use it. Just don't tilt it if you enjoy digging a hole before shooting macros of ants at eye-level with the viewfinder, all fine. If you don't have one, you can't use one... I think that is a more severe flaw than having one you don't use, right? And it's one of the big things that made digital photography, one of the things optical cameras just can't. My current APS-C has one. My next APS-C will have one.

Anyone thought about the possibility to play Pong or Snake on the Screen while waiting for an event to happen or object to be visible in perfect light?

As long as they didn't have a commercial with a girl called Britta...Guess for similar reasons there is no "Fenix 4", Garmin went straight from 3 to 5...
Let's just hope the 666 has some kind of tilting or flip out screen. Everything besides that seems good news, might even replace my KP...

Hm, maybe the screen is not tilt but detachable? Small battery to keep it running like a tablet and WiFi or something connected to the body? :hmm:

So glad Pentax isn't making a mirrorless now!

I don't either. For me it's a backup thing if I don't have another camera at hand for that. But "Video" brings a lot of nice gimmicks like the GH5 "post focus". Instead of taking a single photo, it records 4k video with a quick focus sweep. Select where you want to place the focus later. Sure, it's only 4k and takes a second not 1/200 but 6k TVs are a reality and 8k are on the horizon and a 8k video mode, better processors and so on making things like this possible in 8k? 8k 16:9 is 33 MPix photos that you can select the focal plane after the shot.

Getting a headache from electronic but not optical viewfinders sucks. Glad I don't have these. Other than that any advantages of keeping a physical mirror?

I can fully agree with troika above.

The things that made me *not* buy a mirrorless System when I decided to go from Superzoom Bridge to interchangable DSLR-style were:
- Lack of available lenses for the applications I was interested in
- Lack of features taking full advantage of the new technology
- Price

The later point will become obsolete as new models are released and previous series bodies come available.

Why not an electronic viewfinder? Yes, with my 300mm f/4 and a x2 adapter mounted I can see things with my dark-accustomed eyes that I can't take a photo off (I had to go fully open aperture and ISO 50k to begin to visualize what I could see with my eyes through the viewfinder). Why would I need to see things, I can't take a photo of? Electronic Viewfinder will do fine, most of the time I only use the viewfinder anyway if it's too bright to actually see well on the screen or when I need full auto-focus capabilities. To confirm focus, LV is so much nicer: Outlines of what is in focus, x16 digital ZOOM to confirm focus on Stars, etc. all that you could have in an electronic View Finder.

Why the mirror? I only see disadvantages. It's slower than electronic shutter. Taking a nice Macro with foucs-stacking and HDR exposure the camera goes tack-tack-tack, then I have to manually change focus on my KP, then tack-tack-tack again introducing vibrations. Yes, there is the mirror pre-release, but again: Why a mirror if I need to activate a work-around to get rid of it?

I would like an updated K3 (or a software update for my KP) to allow focus-stacking, but a mirrorless version (still using the K-Mount Lense environment) would be so grand. If the body size would not get reduced (I don't mind my KPs size), we could have an electronic viewfinder, a decent flash, GPS, ... there is so much room taken up by that prism and mirror...

Can anyone tell my why the people mentioned above migrated back to a loud, vibrating mirror thing? Was it actually the camera handling and missing a mirror???

Thanks :) it's a bit limited what you can upload here and what resolution you can use... yes, I might consider donating.

About the milkey way, my 10-20mm f/3.5 Sigma is well... giving ok results with AstroTrace but a faster, less distorting lense would certainly be more useful. The 70mm f/2.8 macro from Sigma is giving near perfect results (still not very much light collected, but nice shape stars into the corners and nice colour), but the field of view is rather limited.

I've calculated that I can do a 3x5 mosaic with something like the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art or 35mm 1.4 Samyang to get the same field of view as my 10mm, much higher resolution and much more light collected with less distortion. Both lenses seem between good and briliant for the task, I am undecided if the auto-focus (which will make the lense a lot more useful everyday) is worth double price... also having a look at vintage 300/4 and 500/5.6 glass now for planets and deep sky stuff. Certainly something like 400/2.8 would be nicer, but I feel I would need a car to mount it on instead of a tripod - while at the same time having to sell my car to afford one...

About the stiching, I can do a write-up some time soon. I use free software like Fiji to stich stacks of microscopy images. Currently struggling with background subtraction in astro images, as my usual approaches also remove all the nebula... lol.

Serial Image Mode very slow [Pentax KP]

Yes, I did that (before the camera use, I used this card to boot an OS from and did pretty thorough testing). Under Linux I used dd for that, but if you have a windows computer h2testw (am I allowed to post links here? https://www.heise.de/download/product/h2testw-50539 ) might come in handy. Free software from the times where people sold manipulated 1 GB sticks as 4 GB capacity. Writes a set amount of data (or all available space) and reads it to verify broken sectors and speed. Basically what dd does but in a nice, windows interface.

When shooting jpg it's more frames until the buffer is full... but I need to shoot raw to develop the macro images out of camera... well, it's not good but at least I don't have to spend money on a faster card or such things because it behaves according to specs (once you have read the fine print).

Oh? I thought that on-board processor does that "on the fly"? Good to know. Can I switch them off? I think lense-correction only happens in camera if it's non-vintage Pentax glass, right? Should not apply for Sigma?

I think that was the part I was missing. I would not call that "Continous" Burst mode... ok. I know the limitation now and will need to plan the burst better. Thanks!

Hi,

I have read what kind of SD-Card my Pentax KP supports (Class 10, UHS-I) and decided to give it a go with the 64GB Transcend Class10 UHS-II. The card reaches the expected MB/s (95 read, 60 write) when used in as USB3 card-reader or the SD-Slot in my Laptop. It should be more than sufficient for the Pentax KP.

The thing now is: The camera is supposed to make 7 images/s on high and 3/s on medium speed. It seems to do that, for about a second or two and then drops to abysmal speed, below 1/s no matter what I do to the trigger.

Do I need a faster card? :(

Well, If you want to focus-stack and stitch a mosaic of image stacks into an enhanced depth panorama (or keep the stacks and stitch them so you have a panorama where you can adjust focus) I have a nice workflow with free software. However, it will take some time for me to get used to all the different naming conventions (NA vs f/ and so on) and the whole post-processing thing is new to me. Sure, enhancing detail, choosing the right dynamic range, but I feel a little helpless right now removing orange glow from my astro images and have to read into that...

Hi All,

what do you usually say in a introduction thread? ASL? I'm from Germany, I got a PhD in Biology, I worked with a lot of different high-end microscopes, image analysis, etc. over the last decade or so and am currently employed by a manufacturer of laboratory equipment as an application specialist for imaging.

I own a super-zoom Bridge Camera (HS10) which I occasionally still use (e.g. for high-speed video) but recently purchased a Pentax KP. Why an interchangeable lens camera (APS-C) and why Pentax? My wife recently got a new 1" point-and-shoot which is so much better than my bridge (10 years of sensor technology improvements and a bigger sensor on top)... we tried to shoot long exposures of a meteor shower with my camera (and didn't get good results) and just on a whim used her camera on the tripod and it was a revelation. I tried some of the recent 1" super-zoom bridge cameras (which perform nicely but not that much better than my wifes compact) and thought about full frame (but too expensive and heavy glass repelled me). So I ended up in the APS-C micro-cosmos and among the medium- to high-end choices Pentax stood out because it had all the "nerd" features I always wondered why nobody would implement. Pixel-shifting the sensor to improve resolution? We do that in microscopy, why doesn't anybody... wait, Pentax does that. And the use it to compensate for the earths movement, too? Brilliant! Why buy an 50€ interval timer if it's a simple task for the camera electronics? Strike, point Pentax... I feel I am a bit limited with 3rd party lenses (and availability of used glass) but I feel I made a good choice feature wise with the bodies.

I already own for my Pentax KP:

"Sigma 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO HSM"
Don't use it for macro work, but there is some perspectives you can't compensate for by walking (and I hate walking ;) and it's a nice every day lens I use when walking the park, a city, etc. It's goof enough for some close ups, portrait, architecture and has a good maximum reach for wildlife... as long as the light is good. I also used it with a 2x converter for bright night sky objects like the Moon or Saturn (yes, 6.3 with a 2x converter is very, very dark but Saturn is very, very bright but small, need the extra mm badly)

"Sigma 70mm F/2.8 EX DG Macro"
Love that one for things that aren't moving too much like pottet plants, my millipedes and I recently used it for biometric portrait shots for a new passport, too.

"Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM"
For Landscape and Panorama shots where I don't want to employ stitching or don't have the time to take 20 shots from a tripod. Those extra 8mm compared to the 18mm are fantastic.

All bought used and yes, despite I'd like a weather resistant objective, somehow no Pentax glass has made it onto my camera... strange but that's how it is for now.

Currently thinking about:
Samyang 24mm 1.4 ED AS UMC or Irix 15mm 2.4 Blackstone or just using my 10-20mm f3.5 with O-GPS? For Panoramic shots of the milky way with some landscape included. Will probably open a discussion thread for that?

Let me know if you have any questions about image enhancement (wide-field de-convolution) or panorama stitching with focus stacking, have done that for thousands of microscopy images, will do that for some photos soon...
