Carl Zeiss Flektogon 20mm F/4

Thank you, I was able to remove the two screws from the rear holding the M42 mount into place. When I removed the mount I saw mechanism with a spring for the aperture. I removed the 4 screws to that ring. When I did that the aperture closed and I saw the stainless steel unpainted aperture blades. They appeared fine. No rust or oil. I was able to open and close them upon pushing the lever. I did see another spring. I didn't go any further than that. When I put it back together the lever came apart into three pieces there was a black thin washer and a small stainless metal piece that attaches to the lever. Took awhile to put that little piece back into the lever as the second spring that it was attached to kept popping out of place. After putting it back together the pin on the top of the mount doesn't pop out anymore. If I had some sort of guide this would be a breeze for me. I've done a few Takumars and Pentax lenses but never a Jena. I also had issue getting the retainer ring off of the front element. Using my spanner wrench it would turn about four times and than tighten either direction. I couldn't remove the name plate ring because it's 77mm and my Japan Hobby vacuum cups aren't large enough. Looking at the video I saw the elements appear to be in a metal optical block housing. I don't think they are cemented but than again he didn't remove the elements from that block.

Here's some photos.

Thanks for the response. They said it could be up to $190.00 with the typical turnaround time for the technician being roughly 9 weeks.😬

Hello, I recently picked up a Flektogon 20mm F/4. The aperture blade isn't moving it is stuck wide open. I would like to repair it. Currently trying to remove the m42 mount, but the two screws don't want to budge. I took a q-tip dipped in nail polish remover to see if they were glued. Even though I didn't see any visible glue on the screws. I than sprayed the q-tip with some WD-40 to see if it would loosen up. That did nothing. I used a flathead CR-V 2.0. I tried removing the retaining ring of the front element with my japan hobby spanner, and it wouldn't come out. It would turn than tighten in either direction. I don't have a vacuum pad large enough to remove the front name plate ring. I've never had a lens give me more issues than this one. I'm very disappointed that I'm not able to open it up.

Does anyone know who could repair this lens in America?

Best vintage wideangle lens to adapt?

Thanks for your recommendation. I prefer the build quality, handling, and compactness of vintage lenses. You're right the prices of older glass are getting out of hand. I know most of these sellers buy them in thrift stores for $5-$10 dollars, and mark them up for rediculous prices. I certainly won't be paying a grand to some price gouging opportunistic swine.

---------- Post added 03-13-22 at 08:49 AM ----------

I should have looked more deeply into the listings. You're right about the prices, and I'm not sure I feel entirely comfortable paying that amount for a Russian lens that may have strong variance issues. While I could afford it, I'd be taking a gamble.

---------- Post added 03-13-22 at 09:11 AM ----------

I have a strong predilection for vintage lenses. I prefer the build quality, handling, compactness, and character.
I was initially going to go with a Loxia 21mm for $400.00, but the seller was being dodgy. Than someone from another forum offered to sell me one for $600.00, but it had some internal issue with crease smearing underneath the optic. They claimed that it wouldn't affect image quality. I didn't believe them, so that was a pass. I feel sorry for whoever buys it. As he is listing it as "excellent condition". I want something with good dimensionality and micro-contrast. If it can produce nice sun stars that's a plus. Although it isn't top priority as I like to capture the sun as I see it sometimes. Upon looking at the price of the Zeiss contax you mentioned. I'd have to pass on that one. I don't agree with paying 2 grand for a vintage lens. For that amount I could buy a GM. No offense to you in anyway. I kindly appreciate the recommendation though.

Hello, thanks for the recommendation. I had the chance of buying a Loxia 21mm for $400.00. The seller was being dodgy with questions, and didn't want to provide proper photos of a flashlight test. I was offered one for $600.00, but had to decline as it had internal crease smearing on the edges of the front element. I've heard good things about the Loxia 25mm. With some claiming that it is better than the 21. I thought of the CV 21 F/1.4. However, I don't need that aperture for landscape. It also doesn't perform to well with coma for astrophotography.

Thanks for the recommendation. Although with the current situation I don't think that will be an option for a very long time.

Using a dumb adapter doesn't harm any lens.

Thanks, which version of this Pentax lens are you talking about? I have a 35mm already, so I wanted something wider that would compliment it.

Hi everyone, what's the best vintage ultra wide angle, lens to adapt to a mirrorless Sony A7Riii. I'm looking for something with good color rendition, micro-contrast, no field curvature, and no corner softness at F/8, F/11. It would be nice if it produced nice sunstars. Bokeh doesn't matter as I'll be shooting it stopped down to the apertures I mentioned already I'd like to use it for landscape purposes. I've thought of the Carl Zeiss Jena 20mm Flektogon F/4 Zebra, but I would like to see if there's better options out there.

Unfortunately I can't test it in person. The seller lives in a different state. He also stated that he is positive the lens wasn't decenter. However when I asked him if he could check to see if it was he said
"I'm not sure how to do that unfortunately." He claims he only used the lens 3-4 times.

---------- Post added 02-20-22 at 08:37 PM ----------

Thank you, I'll give it a read.

---------- Post added 02-20-22 at 08:45 PM ----------

Doesn't look a bit foggy to you with the flashlight shining underneath of it? I'm not sure if smaller optics are suppose to look like that. I know with my 50's on up they look pretty crystal clear when I shine light on them. He claims it's in excellent condition. I just feel a bit concerned buying from someone with no reviews. I am protected as a buyer though.

Interesting I'll have to play around with it on a APS-C as well. I have a APS-C and FF camera.

Your copy is likely smaller and compact like the first two M mount versions. I'm pretty sure I could control the aperture and focusing manually as it's not a AF lens. I should be able to open and close the aperture without mounting it on the camera. If I'm wrong you can correct me. The build almost reminds me of a Takumar. I love the build of those lenses.

Hello, I'm interested in purchasing this lens, and I wanted to know if you guys see anything wrong with the lens. Thanks for your time.
Also, is this a worthy lens for landscape for the price of $450.00?

I'm guessing this will benefit a higher MP camera. Such as the 100MP A7RV. The only downside for some will be how badly it impacts their adapted vintage lens collection. If stacked sensors already affect most Leica lenses for example. I could only imagine how it will impact them even more.

Instagram vs...

I actually started with Instagram a few years back. I discovered Flickr and prefer it a lot better. I get more engagement there. Also I don't like the direction IG is going. They want to eventually do away with stills so they can try to be the next tic toc....

I also don't like how terrible looking selfies can have over 100k likes while most of us actual photographers barely get noticed. Than again I know most of these people buy their likes and their followers. Especially some of the big name product pushers on Youtube. They get off on posing as photographers. Looking at their Follower to photo like ratio exposes them fairly quick.

Come to think of it. I forgot I took those portraits on a APS-C camera. The ones in the comparison I took with a full frame. I'll have to test it out again during another outdoor portrait session and see how it does. Here's another persons example of the bokeh shape towards the corners. As you can see it's the same shape. I guess it's apart of the character of this lens. The reason why I took the comparison photos like that was because I was trying to get as many points of light in the background as I could to display the bokeh shape and character.

Shape with christmas lights.

Yes, I always use a lens hood. The day I took those photos the sun was poking in and out of the clouds. Here's two portraits I took with the lens. It's the first two photos of the woman in yellow. They were taken with natural light.

Both lenses have a UV filter for their protection. The bit of glow you see in A is apart of that lenses character when shot wide open.

---------- Post added 12-07-21 at 04:35 AM ----------

Both lenses were manually focused on the same point of interest. Which was the three wooden stakes on the left hand corner of the photographs.

Thank you all for participating. I enjoyed reading all your comments.
I find it interesting that some of you think B is a Helios. B isn't known for having Swirl. Perhaps it was the leaves swaying in the wind that is giving it that illusion. If not than maybe it is the elliptical shaped points of light in the bokeh. If I did use a Helios I would have had to stand further back from my subject as that lens has a different focal length by 8mm. Also the swirl would have been more pronounced.

I like how the points of light in the center of A are more pronounced and bunched up. Kind of looks like soap bubble bokeh to me. However I don't think the lens in question is known for having that character.

There's no doubt that B has the better acuity. However to be fair giving the age difference in this comparison. I made it strictly about bokeh.
For my next lens comparison I will include different subjects.

Here's the reveal.

A is the SMC Pentax 50mm F/1.2. The first version not the A version of the lens. I'll eventually pick up a copy of the A version to do a comparison between the two. As the A version is said to have better sharpness and contrast. We'll find out if that's true eventually.

B is going to be a BIG shocker for some of you Pentaxians in here. Especially the ones that chose it over the A. 😋 B is the Sony 50mm F/1.2 GM.

Eventually I'd like to test the Sony 50 GM against the HD PENTAX-D FA50mmF1.4 SDM AW. Hopefully one day we'll see a modern Pentax 50mm F/1.2 🤞

Picked up some vintage lenses

Hello everyone! I recently picked up some vintage lenses on my trip. Some of them I can't find any information on. I can't even find exact matches for some of them on Ebay. One of them I can't find at all. If anyone has any information about them please do share. I'm curious as to why the Voigtlanders are built slightly different. One says made in West Germany and the other says Germany. These two are the heaviest lenses in this collection very solid builds.

I'm also curious about the Isco Gottingen Westanar 50mm F/2.8 Why do both lenses look drastically different in build and size? One is a M42 mount which is the larger lens while the smaller one is a Exakta mount.

Here's a list of thr lenses I purchased.

Steinheli Munchen E Cassarit F/2.8 45mm

E. Ludwig Red V Meritar F2.9 50mm Germany

Isco Gottingen Westanar F/2.8 50mm M42 Germany

Isco Gottingen Westanar F/2.8 50mm EXA Germany

Voigtlander color skopar x 50mm f/2.8 West Germany

Voigtlander color skopar x 50mm f/2.8 Germany.

I only paid $5.00 for each lens, minus the two Voigtlanders. I was charged $20.00 a piece. I still think I made out pretty good. Love the look, compactness, and build quality of these little lenses.

Photos below.
