Always have a non-cell phone camera with me. Usually my Ricoh GRiii but often my Ricoh WG6. Prior to the GRiii I usually carried a Pentax Q7.

As a war gamer and history buff for over 60 years I recently picked up Great Military Blunders by Geoffrey Regan. It’s pretty light reading and easy to pick up for a few minutes as each blunder story is just a few paragraphs long.

I purchased a Pentax 150-450 from forum member wolfone. It was a matter of timing. I came into a small unexpected windfall and he posted it in the Market Place. I have been taking it out on my neighborhood safaris shooting squirrels and robins. So far quite impressed with it.

Merry Christmas from Bandit and me.

One year ago on Christmas Day I checked into Nazareth House for care and rehab after having had my kneecap reconstructed after fracturing it a few days earlier. I did not get to take Bandits 2022 portrait and missed all the family gatherings.

Here is his 2023 Christmas portrait.

I recently acquired a Pentax 150-450 from a forum member. I’ve gotten some squirrel shots around the neighborhood but I decided to tote it on our afternoon walk at Champion’s Park. This is Bandit handheld.

Last autumn I started shooting casual portraits of my dog park friends with their dogs. I had several in which I was able to corral and get up to 3 dogs and an owner all posed and looking at the camera in the same 1/500th of a second by using a squeaky toy. Jessi, the lovely red head in this photo, saw some of those and wanted a family portrait for herself. Shooting five dogs and two people is exponentially more difficult than an 3+1. Especially considering that a 6th dog kept photobombing our attempts while that owner was flirting with a woman 30 yards away and not minding his pooch despite my pleas to call his dog.

My intended dog subjects were losing patience, wanting to get to walking part of the dog walk. We gave up and rescheduled. But when I downloaded the photos to my computer I saw this frame that perfectly captures the chaos of owning five dogs. It’s one of my favorite pet family portraits. Jessi used it on her Christmas cards that year.

Figuring this photo was pre-visualized, set up and and competently executed in a controlled environment rather than a serendipitous capture. I’ll claim this as an art photograph.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Bandit. I was not inclined to dress dogs in costumes but since Bandit started making promotional TV appearances for different fund raising events it was requested he dress in the appropriate theme. Tomorrow is a Walk for “something” or another with a pet costume contest at the end. In October he made an appearance on a local TV station in support of a Halloween themed rescue fund raiser. I just did that shot today. I’ve got one more portrait to shoot while I have my living room converted to a studio but he had enough of it for today.

This is Jim with Kibble, a Kentucky Toy Giraffe. Kibble won the pet costume contest I photographed yesterday. The shoot was similar to the wedding I shot the previous weekend. It was outside, cool, overcast and rainy on and off.

Yesterday i noticed a black smudge on one side of all images taken with my GRIII. Although less noticeable I can see it on the rear screen as well. Apparently it started about a week ago but I hadn’t noticed it until I downloaded the images yesterday. Please advise.

I always have camera with me. Even if it’s just my Ricoh WG6 or GR III. But I try not to be the family gathering photographer. Most of those photos are snapshot memories well served by cell phones. However, my 35 yo niece is getting married to her long time live-in boyfriend next weekend. She’s not hired a photographer and is relying on the guests with cell phones to document the event. She wants me to be able to mingle with family I don’t see often. I appreciated that thought but my sister, her mother, asked if I’d bring some gear so they could get some “good pictures” of everybody.

My ex-wife and her family always expected me to the wedding photography for a dozen cousins for free, since I had a good camera. Hated it.

K70 with aperture block failure. Repair? Replace? Or do nothing?

I did not know that! I hadn’t run across that tidbit in the forums. I have a DA• 16-50mm PLM and a broken 55-300 PLM. The zoom mechanism is partially locked up. The zoom range is 88mm-150mm but both lens do work.

With K70 held at waist level. Here’s Judge and Sailor coming up to greet me at Champions Park. Accurate composition is still a bit of a challenge. Maybe I should limit my dog photography to Great Danes.

I bought my K70 in 2016 I believe. I have 3 lenses with aperture rings, a F50mm 1.7 and a 50 2.8 macro. Oh yeah and a Rokinon 8mm Fisheye. This is not an emergency decision but I wanted to get it out of my head.

A couple years ago my K70 exhibited ABF symptoms and finally died. I wasn’t concerned. I still had a K3-ll and was getting a K3-lll. Last December right before Christmas I fell and fractured my knee cap. After surgery and weeks of PT I’ve regained 90% of normal flexibility. I still cannot crouch or squat. The knee won’t bend that much. Although I can kneel on my good knee getting back up is a problem. Hey, I’m 73.

I didn’t realize how often I used get down to their eye level when photographing dogs, or ground level macro or using low angle composition techniques. I’ve occasionally carried a child size folding camp stool to the dog park but that’s one more piece of gear to tote. Thus didn’t realize how handy a flippy screen would be now. (I also used to reverse it for sell-portraits.)

I contacted one place that offered repairs by modifying something but not replacing the bad solenoid but also read in the that’s not a recommended solution.

If I deem it’s worth regaining the ability to compose low POV shots. I’m torn between repairing this K70, searching for a deal of another new or used K70 or doing without. Buying another APSc body feels a bit silly since I sold my K3-ll and bought another K3-III so adding a K70 would be just for one purpose. However, I also found a used K1-II that as piqued my curiosity. That might require selling one of my K3-IIIs.

Opinions and thoughts are welcome but I posted this mostly just as a “Thinking out loud” exercise.
