Messing about on the water yesterday. Passing Brixham Breakwater in the first one:

And heading upstream past Dartmouth Castle in this one:

Amazing to think that the little stream called the Dart, that I can cross over on a couple of stepping stones on an afternoon walk, has become such a river in just the 40 miles or so that it takes to reach Dartmouth. Both with the 18-55mm WR.

It was a baby grass snake - yoy can egt some idea of the size here

gotta be worth two in the grass by Graham Hobbs, on Flickr

that I found making its way across our lawn. I picked it up to have a look at (and to show my kids there was nothing to fear and show them hoe to tell it apart from an adder). Then I replaced in on the lawn and lay down in front of it with the K-3 on the ground, trying to get a sharp shot when it stopped and raised its head to taste the air. The rest is in the picture :)

PS - my grandparents used to live just down the road in Harpenden, and I did my A Levels there - nice part of the world :)

I got a K10D new from 'Jessops', Chelmsford, Essex ( England) in 2006 I had won £ 250-00 of Jessops vouchers ! I use it for my 'Work' Photography for local newspapers -- for my 'Personal Photography' I use my FILM cameras. I use many older 'Screw' lenses on the K10D and have done some A4 Ink-jet prints from it for my Club.

The guy surfing in a hat gets my vote for sheer sartorial chutzpah.:)

That's a good question. I'll have to consult my hi-tec exposure reciprocity calculator.

(Quickly counts on fingers. . . )

Yep, the Sunny 16 that I personally use would max out at f/2.0 at 1/4000 at ISO 100 in direct sunlight. Beyond that, I would know that the brightest parts of any clouds in the shot would be blown. But if it was a shot where blowing out clouds wasn't an issue, then f/1.4 at 1/4000 would probably work fine. I suppose f/2.0 at 1/4000 might become an issue for the razor thin depth of field types, who want to shoot portraits in full daylight where only the tip of one eyelash is actually in focus. But that's not an approach that I can imagine myself ever using. The present day obsession with thin depth of field in portraits is mostly about showing off that you can afford to spend thousands on a full frame DSLR with a very fast lens.

Don't think of the DFA 28-105 as a typical 'kit lens'. It's not. Within it's range it is every bit as good as the DFA 24-70. It is however, a much slower lens and if you need the constant f/2.8 then of course the 28-105 is not the answer. But as far as build quality and optics the DFA 28-105 is NOT a 'kit lens'.

One other point... I see that you're in the UK. Bear in mind that if you buy the camera and lens from a US dealer, if you need to send the camera in for warranty repair work, you'll have to send it to the USA. The items I bought from B&H were only available in the US, otherwise I'd have bought them locally. Yes, it's more expensive over here, but it's better to have the local warranty :)

SRS Microsystems has the K-1II + 28-105 for GBP £2099. By the time you've bought the camera and lens from the USA and paid shipping, import duty and VAT, I doubt you'll be paying much less than that anyway...

At B&H, the price is currently $2,296.95 for the K-1II + 28-105 lens. So, with this deal from Cameta, you're basically getting all of those extras free. The combined value of the *useful* items - the card, flash, battery and bag - is less than $100, in my view. So you're maybe $100 better off with the Cameta deal. I don't know what they're like to deal with - they could be great. I've had experience of buying from B&H, though, and they were very good. I wouldn't let $100 sway me...

The flash is a simple, manual model - i.e. not P-TTL - but useful enough if you're happy working with manual settings. The tripod, I'm afraid, looks almost useless for DSLR work. It's more suitable for light-weight cameras - compacts, that kind of thing. Very much a low-end consumer model.

The rest of the accessories range from very basic / ersatz to "throw away" (there's no way I'd clean my sensor or lenses with that kit). The battery will likely be a generic 3rd party model labelled as "high capacity" - not very good, but possibly a useful backup. The card, if in fact it's a genuine Transcend card, should be fine, but nothing special. The bag... meh, it'll hold your camera and lenses, I guess, but you could do better...

Basically, it looks like one of the typical deals where a seller provides the camera and pads out the deal with cheap accessories to make it look like great value for money :o

I'm probably going to get creamed for even thinking in these terms, but with so many vague conclusions I begin to wonder if allot of the objective thinking isn't rationally influenced under the color of subjectivism...

So much for vagaries.

As for my truth? I simply couldn't be happier with my mark ii, and that is a FACT.

Cheers

Story of my life. . .

Did you try a B&W version of that one, Paul? Looks like an ideal candidate.

Here's some campers at Foggintor with the Takumar 17mm fisheye. One of these days I'm going to figure out a way to photograph that place that really captures the feeling of it, but I've never got even close so far. I'm starting to think that the perfect shooting angle would probably involve abseiling halfway down a rock face.

Campers at Foggintor by David Holland, on Flickr

Edit:
I wasn't happy with the original version, so I did a de-fished re-edit but the corners are a mess. As Christian says: a multi-shot panorama would have been a much better option.
