Getting your subjects is a major part of portrait photography. If a person can't get them - he's failing as a portrait photographer even before he started taking pics.
It's funny when people start blaming model or equipment, instead of their lack of skill. I'm speaking in general, not about you mate :)

Oh, you met tech geeks, not photographers :) They're in every forum no matter what's the topic, so don't worry.
For me K20D is the best Pentax camera there is today and I'm looking for my new purchase - K10D with it's CCD magic!

I bought my K20D brand new 10 years ago and still use it. Shutter count is above 30,000 but it looks like straight from the box with absolutely no signs of usage.
But that's with everything I own. Even my cars are usually in better condition than when they left factory.
But I know a person who has gone through 3 original Pentax remote controls just by breaking them while using or carrying.

BTW, she's not only my friend, but also a famous Lithuanian model who was in various Vogue magazines around the world and even printed in a Helmut Newton's book :)

Using anything else than a pure RAW file doesn't make sense on a DSLR, but that's just my opinion.

Well, it should be small, weather sealed and noiseless... So I would go with CAT S60 smartphone (it even has thermal imaging) and a rugged external solar panel.

Because I live in an area with a serious risk of upcoming war, my bag is always packed. Sadly, there's no place for camera gear left, because ammunition and food rations are more important :)
