Okay.. sorry but I did a search before I posted and didn't find anything. I've only installed on Windows 10 machines so far and did have to use the SD/USB drive trick.

So you have purchased a new-to-you Pentax DSLR and would like to have the Pentax software installed. Problem is that you don't have the CD that came with the camera. You can go to the Pentax site and download the software but it's called an update and won't install without the original software or CD... Well, seems that you don't need the original CD or the software installed on your computer to be able to install the software.
1) Download the software here, you can download the version 4 or 5 (your preference), the 64bit version 5 would be the better software if your computer can handle it: Software Downloads : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING
2) Get a SD card or USB drive and insert into the computer.
3) Rename the card or drive S-SW90 for use with version 4
4) Rename the card or drive S-SW140 for use with version 5
Nothing has to be on the card or drive, they just have to be renamed.
Run the updater software that you downloaded above and just choose the defaults as it installs.

This little bird has taken possession of that feeder and comes in hot and heavy when someone else is there. She didn't even have her feet out when she came in around that feeder. More times than not I'll take the pic and she'll not be in it. Fast little thing.

I just wanted to congratulate the winners of this challenge, but also note that instead of just picking the winners; RGlasel actually critiqued the photos giving them his perspective which is very refreshing. Many times we just get a nod or thumb one way or another. It's like someone reading a book, I enjoyed the critique as much as the photos themselves. Thank you.

Screw drive .. hmmm... okay. Yeah, doesn't matter what you point it at, near, far, contrasting, it doesn't matter. I'm giving up on this one, I'll concentrate on my other body. It's in good shape otherwise, I'll let someone else put the time into it or part it out. It's only got 9,000 clicks on it.

I think I have this figured out now.. This is my Vivitar Series 1. I've always liked this lens and it's the first time I've fitted it to my IST DL. Just a sample shot at 210, but you can see how the bokeh falls away even with a shallow photo. |

Thanks! I am enjoying it.. learning to use my old lenses like my Vivitar Series 1 and such with it.
I believe that it's the suffix for Pentax.. a play. Pentax*ist = Pentaxist

Yes, I double checked because you asked. The body doesn't fire with any MF lenses; neither full manual or A lenses. It does fire with AF lenses though. It also fires without any lens on at all.

Well, take a photo of the AF not working. With an AF lens, you push the trigger in half way. The lens runs to the end stop then reverses to the other end stop and quits. This happens every time you push to focus. If you manually focus the lens, the pentagram will appear in the viewfinder when focus is correct. I'm an electronics tech and am curious as to how the AF functions within the camera.
The second part of the lens issue was mechanical. Someone had reefed the lens off at one point and jammed the auto coupler (the AF drive coupler) into the ring so it wasn't functioning at all. The first try resulted in the shaft not allowing the lens to be removed as it wouldn't retract in either MF or AF mode. I was able to compare the linkage to my other IST and fix it.

Sergy, thanks for that. The one body was set at 2 (to fire if not set to A) but will not fire for whatever reason. The second body was set to 1. When I set it to 2 it fires as it should. Both bodies worked with the lens before the update to 1.03. Ah well, the second body is the better one anyway.

I have a pair of *IST DLs. I've been using my Albinar 80-200 lens with these two bodies noting that it is a manual lens. It's worked very well. Both cameras were on version 1.00 firmware. A few nights ago I upgraded the firmware to 1.03 (the latest version) and now find that neither body will trigger the shutters in any mode. I can fire the shutters without a lens or with any of my other lenses but they are all A lenses. Is this odd or is this normal?

I figured I'd find some direction on the autofocus issue other than advising me to get a new camera... ? BTW I have been able to remedy the lens removal; just a small mechanical adjustment.

Yeah, the ME-F is also auto-focus but not like these. I'm more of a spot focus kind of shooter. So far I'm using mostly manual lenses so AF is something I haven't used much. I'll have to get better at that. I like my ME-Super's focusing better than these though, I always felt like the focus was so much better on it. And while I have one good photo shop, it's 45 miles away and film has gotten prohibitively expensive especially the amount I used to shoot.

I have an IST DL which had the auto coupler jammed into the ring. I was able to remedy that so that the coupler was out the correct amount to engage the AF lens. The lens runs in and out to the stops and then will arbitrarily stop somewhere out of focus. Doesn't matter what lens I use, it does this on them all. The pentagram within the viewfinder shows up when you manually focus the lens, so it seems to have that working. I currently also have to work the lens to get it back off the camera as it gets hung up on the auto coupler. 2 different problems. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for in getting the AF back to working properly?

I've been shooting Pentax since the ME-Super first came out. My very first serious camera and had it for years; travelled all over the world with it until it was stolen at an event with everything. I was finally able to get a decent set up to replace it about the time my second daughter was married, which I shot portions of. About that time film was becoming more and more difficult to purchase and develop for a decent price and my newly found love of photography foundered once again. I picked up a Kx for my wife a number of years ago and she's been shooting it with great success, so I just recently picked up a pair of *IST DLs which I'm re-hatching my photographic love once more. I love using all my lenses and shooting it manually; I find that it's a very nice camera. So I'd been a lurker on the site for some time and thought I'd join in.. Love the Pentax lines, always have, but most of my cameras are film; ME-Super, ME-F etc.
