Do you trust your online storage?

I received an email imploring me to upgrade to Flickr Pro. The rate seems reasonable enough, but I recall what Photobucket did to us a few years back, basically holding our photos hostage for a high fee. Why trust Smug Mug / Flickr, now that the Photobucket precedent has been set? What stops them from jacking prices year over year?

What philosophy works best for an amateur looking to go towards retirement with something like a 645z who would like to occasionally share with friends and family? Any regrets if you are already ‘locked in’ to a particular methodology?

I’m having fun with a 67 / The Darkroom scans / Flickr basic right now, but I have to start making decisions pretty soon, as I’ll either push further into my own film scanning and / or go full digital.

Thanks for your insights; hope this doesn’t seem too fundamental a question, coming from an old schooler.

I’m just barely scratching the surface, but I bought a 645 with the 45mm f2.8 A lens, but it didn’t have the ‘wow’ factor for me. The 75mm f2.8 is sharper, but I then moved to a 67 with the 105 f2.4 SMC. The camera is intuitive, and with a good strap, the bulk disappears during walks. The images are nothing less than sublime, and I won’t look back now. The later 55mm and 200mm 67 lenses are in my future.

I do expect to go to the 645Z some day, but I’m having too much fun now. Not sure how using the 67 would be a nuisance to somebody unless you stuck it in their face. The mirror / shutter noise is mechanical music to my ear...the Ducati of cameras!

Consistent Underexposures - 645

Thanks, Alex645.

I’m just fine with manual - part of the experience, as it were. If I can just get a few good shots for motivation, now that I understand what’s happening, I’ll go hunting the 75mm, and possibly the 35mm. I am liking the view and the feel of the 45mm for now, though.

I appreciate your troubleshooting help!

I’ve actually isolated the problem down to an issue with the aperature priority mode. Watching from the front of the lens during an f2.8 exposure, I notice that the aperature moves to somewhere in the f16 / f22 range during exposure (obviously creating unsalvageable photos). I don’t seem to have that happening in either manual or shutter priority modes. I’m not yet developing my own film / scanning yet, but that may come.

I have a couple of test rolls going out tomorrow for development. I can live with working this camera in manual mode if I have to.

Thanks!

Thanks for the kind reply. I will take your advice and sacrifice a roll of both Ektar 100 and Portra 400.

I have had good recent success with ‘The Darkroom’ online for developing my film, and I’m just thrilled that my old Minolta SRT-201 still cranks out great pictures after all these years. The edge numbers on the 120 film are dark and clear, so I’m pretty sure that I’m the problem and not the lab.

Interesting that you use ISO 50 and +1EV for the Ektar. I will determine how close I get to that setting after I run my tests.

Last question: Can these old light meters actually be re-calibrated? Is this something I might be able to do myself, or is it beyond the skills of a handy person? I do look forward to eventually getting some good, solid medium format photos!
