We might be close to a new GR camera

Personally, I would like to see a GRIV with a collapsible, fixed, 24-80mm power zoom lens (or there abouts). I would be one of the first to order. Don't think it will ever happen though.

Telephoto for vaca in rocky mtn nat'l pk?

I've been there twice with the smc DA 55-300mm version of that lens on a K50 and K70 and found it to be quite adequate. If you really want a longer lens you might check in to renting a 150-450, and/or adding the 1.4x teleconverter. Be sure to have a wider option available for some stunning landscape shots. Something that will go down to 15-18mm.

I went in mid Sept. both times and saw very little wildlife from the road one could get a shot of. Also there were not many places to pull over. I did find Moose at Sprague Lake at sunrise. Very easy to drive to with an accessible path around the lake. There were Elk in Moraine Park at sunset that were mostly a good distance from the road but occasionally fairly close. This time of year, most of the wildlife is up in the higher elevations.

One thing I found very useful was a book entitled, "Photographing Rocky Mountain National Park" by Erik Stensland. He's a local photographer with 20+ years of experience in RNP and hiked over 8,000 miles in the park. It is an excellent guide. You can get it at the visitor centers, Amazon, or his gallery, Images of Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, but I would suggest get it and read/study beforehand. His gallery is well worth taking the time to visit. Outstanding work.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy. It is a beautiful place.

So very true! What separates great wildlife photographers from great photographers of other subjects is their patience, skill in concealment, tracking, hunting and stalking, and have a great understanding of wildlife behavior. The camera and equipment doesn't really make that big of a difference,

October 14 annular eclipse

Interesting, I've never seen an annular eclipse before. I wasn't aware it is happening. I'll have to do some research. I've been thinking about making a fall trip somewhere (possibly Utah). I was fortunate to see and photograph the 2017 total eclipse. An amazing sight! The good thing is I live directly in the center of the path for the April 2024 total eclipse.

Strugling with wb in underwater shots

Water absorbs red light wavelengths and reflects blue light wavelengths. That's why the sky appears blue. 75% of the earth's surface is water and absorbs red light. Then reflects blue light back into the atmosphere where it is reflected off water molecules (and other particles) in the atmosphere back to the earth. Hence the sky is blue.

As far as your issue, it is definitely a WB issue. Since shooting raw with the WG-70 is not possible, post processing correction is very difficult. Not impossible, but difficult. With the camera having an underwater WB option, I assume Rioch has corrected for this. One might also try a shade or overcast WB or even a fluorescent light WB.

I did too. They were great. But I started listening with Marty Breneman's predecessor, Al Michaels.

After I moved to Arkansas in the early 80's I actually could pick WLW when I was on top of the Ozark peaks. Got to listen to the call of Johnny Bench's last game.

The KP shoot that didn’t happen

I did that once. Changed my workflow process so it doesn't happen again. Now, I always take the camera to the computer, not just the card. Remove the card from camera, insert it in the computer and copy the files. Camera sits on desk next to keyboard or laptop. After copying the files, I immediately put the card back into the camera then put the camera away in the camera bag. I don't review or process the images on the computer until the card is back in the camera and stowed away in the camera bag. Use the same process every time so it becomes routine.

Recommend Backpack for 150-450 + K3 III/KP + Tripod

There seems to be two schools of thought on this subject. A pack that is designed first as a photo/camera bag that can be worn on one's back, or a pack designed specifically for hiking/backpacking (like the one pictured above) that one can adapt to carry photo equipment with inserts, padding, clips, etc. I tend to favor the hiking/backpacking type because they are designed for comfort, durability, and efficient load carry. The photo backpacks I've tried are just not very comfortable for an all-day outing. The most important thing is that the pack is sized properly to fit you. If you want to check out the hiking packs, visit an R.E.I. store. There is a half dozen in the SF Bay area. They have a very good selection of quality backpacks. They will also measure your torso and properly size and fit a pack to you. You can try on several packs, walk around the store with and without weight in them, then select the one you want or none at all. No cost to you.

Quick poll about tripods

I have both types of tripods and prefer the twist-locks. For me the twist-locks are easier to adjust each individual leg when on uneven surfaces, easier to adjust lock tension, and quicker to operate than the flip-lock type. Also, I constantly snag the flip-locks on something popping them open.

If you lost all your camera gear in a fire ...

At this point in life if I lost everything and was fully compensated for it, I would get a K3iii, DA 16-85, DA 55-300mm plm, and a GRiii or GRiiix. Take what's left over and go on an extended camping trip to either Yellowstone/Teton area or southern Utah/northern Arizona, or both.

Image in viewfinder in k-70 vs Image in viewfinder in K-3 iii? Dumb Question

At first I thought the same with my K70. But, after doing some testing I concluded it's the camera's rear display that is doing the slight cropping. Images viewed on my computer monitor show the complete image I see in the viewfinder, perhaps even ever so slightly more. Whereas, the image on the rear display appears very slightly cropped on all four sides. Not a big deal for me. I always try to frame shots to allow for a little cropping or straightening anyway.

Lens recommendations for Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks

I think those choices will serve you well. Perhaps you've already considered it, but I would also strongly recommend adding a travel tripod for pixel-shift, sunrise/sunset shots, wonderful family shots that include yourself in beautiful surroundings, astro photography, etc. (delayed or remote shutter release).

Lens recommendations for Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks

I visited both parks last year (May 2021). I used a K70 with a DA 16-85mm mostly. IMO it was the perfect lens for those places. I found that going extra wide was not all that beneficial. The beauty of these places is the detail and variation in the rock formations and changing light. You tend to lose some of that with wider angles, so I like to zoom in a little to capture it. Zion is in a canyon with not many expansive views (there are some though). Bryce is more open with some wider views, but there again you don't want to lose the detail of the hoodoos, I also carried the DA 55-300mm PLM for wildlife. There is a good amount of wildlife in both parks. I also took the Rokinon 14mm but never used it. Additionally, I had the DA18-55mm and the DA 55-300mm (non plm) with me as backups which I used the 18-55mm after I stumbled and broke the 16-85mm later on in the trip at Mesa Verde National Park. Most important part is to have fun and just enjoy these beautiful natural places.

Precision Camera Customer Service

I sent a lens to them last summer. After 2-3 weeks the repair status change to "sent to manufacture's repair facility". I had to call them to find out what that meant. They sent it to Pentax in Japan. About a month later I received an email with the final estimate. Took about 6 weeks after giving them authorization to get it back. It did come back in almost new condition and is better than it was when I bought it.

Your situation sounds about normal, 2-4 weeks for an estimate. They should give you a final cost estimate, and time estimate after they receive your authorization to proceed. I would think they could do your repair in house and not have to send it to Japan. But one never knows. Precision could do a lot better job communicating. The only way I knew it was on the way back to me was a notice from FedEx that I had an incoming package on its way.

Picking up first Pentax - need help deciding

I would suggest the K70 with the DA 18-135mm over either a K5 or K3 because of the higher resolution, better low light performance, and lighter weight. It's not as rugged as the others but is still well built and will last a long time if you don't abuse it. It may feel a little off in your hands but after using it for a week or 2 you will develop the muscle memory to the point it will feel quite comfortable.

Wow! 10-mile, high elevation hike carrying backpacking and camera gear with significant elevation gain in 3 hours. 3.33 mph pace. You are very fit indeed. I did a multiday backpacking trip in the San Juans a couple years ago. It certainly is a rugged area. The best I could do was about 2 mph on the level spots. I carried a K70, DA 16-85, and 55-300 plm with 2 extra batteries, a dc charger, and a 20,000mA powerpack. The 55-300mm plm worked very well for me. Extremely fast focus, lightweight, and compact. The only drawback may be if you are in the forest in early morning or late evening (when the sun is low and behind a mountain) you may not have enough light to shoot the way you want to because of the slow aperture. On my copy the best quality is using it at f: 7.1-8, and a zoom range from about 75-275mm.

I would suggest the DA 16-85 + DA 55-300 PLM. The simplest kit. It's what I use with a K70 and covers over 90% of my needs.

Adjusting every "good" lens costs you nothing but time. Sending the FA 85 out for repair is probably at least $250 or more.

16-50 PLM Behind the scenes video

Nice video, but not sure where the "Behind the scenes" tag comes from. All I saw was a skilled photographer shooting a lovely model with a K3iii and DA* 16-50mm, demonstrating that combo is excellent for portrait work. I was expecting something about the thought process and lens design/construction that makes it superior. The big question it raised for me, was the video shot with the same camera/lens combo?

Pentax lens profiles disappeared in LRC v11

I have seen exactly what you show whenever I edit an image in Photoshop then bring it back into Lightroom. The Pentax profiles disappear (along with several others). I just make sure I apply lens corrections first in Lightroom before editing any image I need to work on in Photoshop. Don't know why that happens.
