To all the great commenters here and on other threads on PF - I picked the Pentax KP! It arrived last Friday. I've been testing out the lenses I'm likely to buy from my friend.

It's been a dream so far! Right out of the box, I've been able to capture things in low light I would have had to just pass on in the past. The bokeh is great, and the color tones are excellent without the need for much Photoshop adjustment.

I'm stoked about what I'll be able to capture now... just beginning to play with it, and haven't even read the manual or changed any settings yet, just shooting out of the box. What a lovely piece it is.

Here's a couple of the first shots in very low-light situations. The first shows great detail in the low-light capture, and the second scores on what I've been trying to do for years but couldn't previously - get sharp detail in the foreground (you can see the threads in the lampshade) with buttery bokeh beyond.

Excellent info - it's starting to sink in. By the way, I also have a Mamiya 645M medium format film camera, a beautiful piece. So, with a sensor and FOV even larger than a FF/35mm, it would create the opposite situation - its "Equivalent" Focal Length would be shorter than a FF/35mm. Right?

[Which just reminds me - I need to get a digital back for that Mamiya to put that wonderful machine back into use]

Thanks a lot - that was a big help. And the article you referenced above ("The Crop Factor Unmasked - Field of View vs Focal Length on various formats") really helped illuminate the whole concept of full frame vs. APS-C (I wish the latter had a better name - I know I'm going to call it the wrong thing half the time, with the C before the P or S after the C, etc :) ) and how the lenses interact with each.

Really enjoyed your review, khardur, and frankly thanks for "ramblin'" a bit, because your longer descriptions, matched with a ton of beautiful pics, really helps me understand the advantages of a KP. Much appreciated!

BirdDude007

BirdDude007, thanks! I have heard that, when used on an APS-C, a vintage 50-135 lens (for instance) would have the effective zoom range of a lens with a top end of 200+. I'm having a hard time understanding that, but understand it to be a by-product of the smaller aperture of a Pentax KP.

I ask because the main lens I use with my old Nikon D40 has been a 55-200, and I really like having the ability to zoom at that higher level.

However, I have the opportunity to buy a vintage 50-135. Which I'd like to do - if it indeed can achieve the zoom level of a 200+ lens.

Any info on that would be helpful - thanks!

I'm new to Pentax Forums, researching a Pentax KP I'm probably just about to buy - and wanted to thank all who have posted so many photos in this thread, to help give me a visual idea of what it can do. (With the right lens, eye and more of course)

Thanks - and I hope to post some of my own pics with a KP here soon!

Great stuff, all. Now that I'm past all the Christmas fun, I'm delving back in and starting to read all the links suggested above. I'm feeling really close to buying the Pentax KP from B&H.

A few questions while I'm doing that:

- Warranties
How do you feel about them? (I need to cut dollars where I can - but also have had good experiences with warranties on stereo equipment in the past)

- Flash
I've been using the built-in flash on my Nikon D40 for years - which means I rarely use it (because it's so un-subtle) and so I try to do a lot with natural light. So I definitely want to get an external/mounted flash for my new Pentax. Any suggestions of one you love for a model like the KP, that is lightweight and value-priced?

- Battery Grip

I'd never heard this term before this thread. Get it for sure, or meh?
Note: I've rarely run out of battery on a shoot, so I'd get it mostly for what seems to be more ease in holding the camera with a long lens for a while.
Also, is a battery grip quickly removable - if I'm using a small lens and would rather go "more compact"?

- Camera Bag
I'd love a recommendation on a bag that you love, that can hold the camera with a lens on it and 1 or 2 other lenses in the bag.

- Other tips/caveats
Any other tips or warnings, etc, you want to share with me before I move forward? For instance, I had been lusting after the K-1 and its full-frame prowess. But my budget is much more in line with the KP, and my gut says the K-1 is overkill for what I do (see above). Your comments have helped convince me I'm fine with the KP. But, any more thoughts?

Thanks y'all!

This is all really helpful. I will check out ALL the links above and digest the thoughts offered (right after Christmas probably).

In the meantime, here's the lenses my "Pentax enthusiast friend" is offering me used. He even provided links to this forum as you'll see :) -

DA 12-24mm vs Sigma and Tamron 10-24mm Comparison Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews
In excellent condition. Great lens. It’s only fault is that it’s a full f4, but for architectural and landscape photography which it’s for, you really don’t need faster

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM
Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database
This lens would give you a 50mm ultra-fast prime. It takes amazing shots. It’s not their “Art” series, but it’s a really good lens

---

Tamron 17-50 SP F2.8 XR
This was my work horse and It’s a little beat up, but it still takes great shots.

---

Tokina AT-X SD 80-200 f2.8 Manual Focus
This lens is ridiculous and with the APC-S conversion this comes to a focal length of 120 x 300 which is insane. The picture quality is incredible, though being a manual focus and old aluminum with a lot of big glass it needs to be shot using a tripod

Also, lens-wise: I have a friend who upgraded to Pentax K-1, so is looking to sell a bunch of his older lenses to me at a good price. So I'd likely just buy the body solo, then pair with some awesome lenses he has. If you're interested, I can share the actual lenses he's offering to sell to me.

Cool - I'm busy studying the KP online, but can you summarize what about it generated controversy? Thanks!

Thanks for the first several comments, these are helpful already!

Here's more info about what I shoot:

- Mostly non-paid stuff like family & school events - casual, but enthusiastically so about capturing day to day moments
- Mostly natural light situations
- A lot of people shots where I want sharp focus but depth of field that gives nice bokeh
- A lot of amateur nature photography too, all outdoors
- Some lower-light and motion-heavy situations, like photos at sports events or plays or official functions for my kids that are held indoors
- Some paid work, all of it residential photography. That's the other reason I'm considering a big change - I need a great wide-angle lens to get residential interiors, which got me thinking - if I'm going to invest in a new wide-angle, but am ready to move up from my Nikon D40 - why not reconsider the whole paradigm/camera make and maybe start anew?

I look forward to any and all comments - hope that helps clarify what I shoot.

Hi all,

Seeking advice about buying a new DSLR.

I've been using a Nikon D40 for 13 years. It's been a good camera, a nice "low-end of the high-end" entryway to DSLR's. But I grew up using film, learning photography as a kid in the 70s/80s, using a Pentax K-1000 for years.

I enjoyed that classic film Pentax, and have a Pentax-enthusiast friend who has talked up the brand. So I'm inclined to "make the switch" from Nikon back to Pentax.

Thoughts & Questions:
  1. I would like to spend less than $1,000 on the body, so I can invest in lenses.

  2. The Pentax KP looks good. Who here has used it? What do you think of it?

  3. My main reason for upgrading my camera is to get a more modern camera body/imager (I've shot 200K+ photos on the Nikon), then invest in lenses to get better bokeh and better pixel depth.

  4. Who do you recommend buying it from? I live in Atlanta, where there's almost no camera stores anymore, so I'd like to buy online.

  5. Open to any input or thoughts you have about Pentax DSLR's in this price range in general; and in your input in the Pentax KP specifically (or another model you recommend more, if there is one).

Thanks in advance! Assume I don't know much about buying DSLR's - the more info you all give, the better. Thanks!

Hi all,

I joined the forum recently, but haven't posted a specific question yet.

I am in the market to buy a new DSLR, and am seeking advice. I have been using a Nikon D40 for 13 years. It's been a good camera, a nice "lowe end of the high end" entryway to DSLR's. But I grew up using film, learning photography as a kid in the 70s/80s using a Pentax K-1000.

Because I used and enjoyed that classic film Pentax for so long, and because of a friend who's a Pentax enthusiast and has talked up the brand, I'm inclined to "make the switch" from Nikon back to Pentax for my new DSLR.

I have questions - but wasn't sure of the best forum in which to post them. Any advice on where to post my questions about which Pentax to get, and where to get it from? Or should I just post it all here in this "newbie" forum?

Thanks - and happy holidays to all!
