How many film cameras do you have?

Many years ago I bought and sold Pentax cameras and lenses on eBay. Around 2006 the market just - stopped. All the good stuff left the hands of those who had bought it new and went to the hands of those who had wanted it but couldn’t afford it before (with probably some intermediate transit holders like me). At that time I could sell an Eric CLA as a distinguishing feature, but not now, except the 50’s cameras. I have all my cameras serviced because I want to use them, but the resale market doesn’t value the CLA as a feature any more.

This is out of context to the quote, but I just recently replaced all my sticky PVC plastic slide and print sheets with archival rated protector sheets. I highly recommend anyone caring about those yesteryear slides and prints to do the same.

Right....... prompted by your reply, I went to the Harrow Technical website and found that Robin is still doing repair work (presumably) from his own home now. Thanks for the info.

Although I marvel at the automatic features cameras have these days, I use my modern Pentaxes much as I did in the film days. For the kind of photography I do, it is still the easiest and fastest.

ZK 50mm f1.4 on ebay

Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Classic. Nor am I a fan of ANY of the Pentax 50's.

For my style of photography, I use a Leitaxed Zeiss 50/1.4 Milvus, and an adapted Leica 50 R Summicron. The Milvus is around $1,000 USD. I just purchased a like new Leica 50mm R Summicron for $500 that was recently CLA'd. All I can say is WOW! If you want an exceptional 50mm lens and don't mind manual focus, you might want to take at look at this Leica lens.

Each lenses has a "look" a "signature". After having shot hundreds of different lens on K-1s, I'm now finding that I prefer the "Leica look" to Zeiss, Voigtlander, Pentax, Sigma or Samyang. For examples, check out our Leica lens club.

ZK 50mm f1.4 on ebay

I'd like to ask each of the above commenters if they have ever actually owned the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 lens? Also, have they ever owned a Pentax SMC Pentax M or A 50mm f/1.4 lens?

If they've never owned the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 lens, I wonder on what they are basing their comments (such as "the Pentax mf lenses would kill this Zeiss"). Such sweeping comments sound to me like over generalizations by photographers who have little (if any) experience with this Zeiss lens.

I've owned 4 different copies of this Zeiss lens. While I not my favorite Zeiss 50mm lens (the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Milvus is much MUCH better) this older Zeiss "Classic" version 50mm f/1.4 lens does perform well if one works to its' strengths (Zeiss colors, wide open performance).

This 50mm f/1.4 ZK lens for sale on ebay is going for about twice what a ZF version of this lens goes for. I would not pay $500 for this ZK version, rather, I'd prefer to save $200 - $300 and buy this same lens in the ZF mount and adapt it to K mount.

Also, comparing lenses to me is more of a personal thing, based upon ones own visual preferences and style of photography. I've owned a couple of Pentax f/1.2 lenses, and never much cared for them. But I'd never put them down just because I don't happen to care for their performance at wider apertures.

Further, comparing this older Zeiss lens to a much newer and more expensive Pentax lens (DFA50), is probably not an apples to apples comparision. Of course the DFA50 is a better lens, and it costs three or four times what this older Zeiss costs also.

Ideally, yes, but usually there are difficulties.

1. Subject needs to stand still
2. Any change in expression, even slight difference in head position can add subjectivity (ie. like/dislike) to the photo
3. Needs a willing model

Maybe a statue in a park would be the closest, but those are usually in a boring dark color.

For my own lenses, I just can't be bothered with such comparisons and use them as the 'lens of the day' and will always conclude that I like them all :D

Pentax SV - Mirror bumper/damping foam?

Coming back a little late to this discussion due to some sort of network issue accessing Pentax Forums, I think it would be good to reinforce that the shutter on the SV is not as complicated as those on later models (even the Spotmatic) and should be readily serviceable by most technicians having experience with horizontal run fabric shutters. From your description, the shutter is fully "capped" meaning that the release timing and/or run speeds are wrong for the two curtains. This is usually a matter of adjustment and would fall within the scope of a normal CLA.

Interesting, how do they compare? I see that the Zeiss is cheaper but the A* lenses are something else to behold!

But I really only ever use the black, matte screen one.
