So, the new K-3 Mk III Mono can take video just like color version, right? Anybody try out making their own film noir projects yet?
EDIT: If I get one I might try making surf videos set to classic surf guitar music from the 60s. Maybe try classic B&W surf photography too…

What are you going to be taking photos of? Different macro lenses might see use with different subjects, or to get a different field of view.

Now this is very interesting to me. I have the Rokinon 24mm T/S and I really like it. A 21mm shift lens would be a nice addition. I wonder if they'll make another lens in the 30-35mm focal length? I've used the sensor shift with my 31mm Limited, and I like the results with that. Having a dedicated shift lens around the same focal length would be nice too.

I am now, at least with mid to large sized birds. I seem to be getting a much better keeper rate than with my K-5IIs. Took a while to get the settings dialed in. Now I have to try this with smaller birds. Not sure if the settings that work for these tropicbirds will work with small birds…

Keeper rate was much better one I got the settings dialed in for BIF, at least with these birds. Tropicbirds are pretty big compared to cardinals.

Will Ricoh be offering an extended warranty for the new Pentax K-3 III? The extended warranty described here on your website states that it is for cameras with an MSRP of $1,000 or less, so it doesn't look like this warranty applies to the K-3 III.

Just to clarify, when you're talking about "GPS via the phone app" running down the battery, are you talking about the camera battery, the phone battery, or both?

How does the K-3 II compare to the Nikon D300's autofocus? If it doesn't compare, then I hope the K-3 replacement at least meets that. That was a pretty good AF system...

Aloha Everyone! I humbly ask for you expert recommendations on autofocus prime lenses in the vicinity of 50mm (appx 40mm - 60mm). My primary requirements are:
1) Fast autofocus on a K5 IIs body
2) Sharp
3) I don't care about motor noise
4) Did I mention fast autofocus?
5) f2.8 or faster
6) Readily available within 2 weeks
Thank you!

PENTAX K-5 II s
Sigma 300 mm f/2.8 with 1.7X AFTC From Wikipedia: The ʻiʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea, pronounced /iːˈiːviː/, ee-EE-vee), or scarlet honeycreeper is a "hummingbird-niched" species of Hawaiian honeycreeper. It is one of the most plentiful species of this family, many of which are endangered or extinct. The ʻiʻiwi is a highly recognizable symbol of Hawaiʻi. The ʻiʻiwi is the third most common native land bird in the Hawaiian Islands. Large colonies of ʻiʻiwi inhabit the islands of Hawaiʻi, Maui, and Kauaʻi, with smaller colonies on Molokaʻi and Oʻahu but are no longer present on Lānaʻi. Altogether, the remaining populations total 350,000 individuals, but are decreasing.

Using an IR filter on a non-converted camera will have an impact in terms of usability. Non-converted cameras have an IR blocking filter (hot mirror) usually installed in front of the sensor. Placing an IR filter in front of the lens only lets IR light through which is then mostly blocked by the hot mirror installed in the camera. Its sort of like placing a strong ND filter on a non-converted camera then trying to take a visible light photo. The net effect is that you will need longer exposure times for the given ISO and f-stop setting than you would with a converted or normal camera.
A clear converted camera replaces the hot mirror with a clear filter which can pass through all the light visible to most digital camera sensors (some UV, visible, & IR). Some folks go with this option and purchase a variety of different screw in filters (UV only pass, visible only pass, visible + UV pass, visible + IR pass, various different IR filters, etc.) in order to get different effects. The advantage of this is that your camera will not need long exposure times for the same ISO and f-stop settings. The disadvantage is that you will not be able to see anything with any filters that block visible light if you are using an SLR with a traditional viewfinder. This makes it harder to focus since you will probably need to compose, focus, then install your filter without disturbing the camera. This isn't so much of an issue if you use liveview to focus and compose. The other disadvantage is that you may need to get different sizes of the filters you like to fit different lenses. You could also get oversized filters that fit your largest lens, then use stepping rings to fit those filters on your smaller lenses. These filters are not cheap...
A fully IR converted camera replaces the hot mirror with a dedicated IR (or UV) filter will not have the same flexibility as a camera converted with a clear filter. You will only have the use of a single filter, basically whatever was installed by the tech. This is not an issue if you like the look of particular filter (UV, 590nm IR, 720nm IR, 830nm IR, etc.).
Here are some samples from an 830nm IR converted Pentax K10D. Good luck with your conversion!

Thank you all for your responses. Just to clarify, the primary uses of this lens will be for wildlife (mainly birding) and surf photography. Also, I already shoot with a Sigma 300mm f2.8 with the Pentax-F 1.7X AFTC. It's a good combination, but I'm looking for a bit more. Also, I'm not too concerned with weather sealing since I have lots of experience using a "Storm Jacket" cover with the 300mm. I'm just trying to feel out which of the two lenses I'd want to get to hit 500mm or 560 mm natively. I'd love a modernized 600f4 or even a Sigmonster in K mount, but who knows if such a thing is ever coming out...
EDIT: Here are some photos I've taken with the Sigma 300mm & the Pentax-f 1.7 |

Hello Everyone! I am looking for the opinions of people who have used or, better yet, owned both of these lenses, pure & simple. Just wondering how the two really compare in terms of sharpness, especially wide open or stopped down 1/2 to 1 stop. Thank you!
