Really good capture, I like how it's got the big blue sky and the bit of water in the background but still lets all of the color of the roofs show through nicely.

For some contests, many of the images tend to fall along similar lines, but the variation in "stories" in these images is quite amazing. Whoever picked the theme for this contest - well done!

Pentax FA 31mm on GFX?

P645 lenses are great, I have the 35mm, 45-85 and the 120 Macro.
I use them mostly for architectural work, not for walking around stuff or infrared.

Pentax FA 31mm on GFX?

Actually, I found that the lens covered the GFX sensor very well, with only a very mild but pleasing vignette, which I never bothered to remove.

The FA31 was also very good for infrared, see this 720nm image shot on GFX:

When the GF20-35 came out I sold the FA31 because the GF lens has AF, covers several important focal lengths and is also excellent for infrared photography.
But the FA series is indeed special, and if I feel the need to add to my portrait lenses, I'll try the 77mm. Thanks for the recommendation.

But it is reasonably sharp @ f6.3, the older 55-300 wasn't sharp under f8. The bigger issue IMO is that it is IF, so 300 mm only at infinity.

Yes the 80-320 is very fragile and yes it gave rather pleasant pictures (on film) never was able to use it on digital. Glad you mentioned that lovely F70-210, I bought that one when it was first launched after the introduction of the SFX-camera's.

Here's my entry with the wonderful Pentax 645Z and the incredible HD Pentax-DA 645 28-45mm F4. 5

This was taken at 31MM at F16, ISO 100 at 1/6th sec.

This was taken at 31MM at F16, ISO 100 at 1/6th sec.

The shutter speed was used to allow for a small degree of movement in the water to be captured but not so slow that the waterflow wouldn't retain some texture. I used a Lee 0.6 soft edged GND to hold back the sky to allow the darker area's closest to me to be exposed without blocking the shadows and I used a 1 stop ND filter additionally to darken the whole scene to allow for that slower shutter speed.

What's so special about the lens. It's the best wide angle zoom ever made for any DSLR. Most wide zooms, particularly on FF formats distort badly, and have soft frame edges - even stopped down. What is truly remarkable about the 28-45 is sharpness is completely uniform centre to edge. This means as a professional landscape photographer I can completely trust the lens and compose the scene how I would like in camera, rather than compose around cropping smeary edges off the frame - or worse still discover the sides of the picture are too soft to pass muster when printing large or supplying for commercial use.Centre to edge sharpness is just as important as back to front sharpness in landscape photography. This lens was the main reason I bought into the 645z system after finding Nikons 14-24, 16-35 hopelessly substandard for my needs.

What's also useful, is the lens has a 82mm filter thread - which is ideal as most landscape photographers do use some sort of filter system.

28-45 is also a really great focal length for landscapes - wide enough to fit everything in without that awful distortion that comes from ultra wide lenses - and long enough to fit in scenes that may not have much foreground at all. It is a lens I can cover the entire of my Glencoe shooting with.

Taken with a SMC Pentax-m 24-35 mm F 3.5 lens on a K-m: 35 mm, 1/500 speed, ISO 200. I bought this lens about 40 years ago and using it on a digital camera now. Although focusing is not always easy, I am very happy with the results. This lens is very sharp, gives good contrast and natural colours. I have not noticed any distortions yet. I like its compact size and easy handling.

The super takumar 28/3.5. The idea that you're working with this lovingly machined chunk of glass, brass and aluminium (at least that's what I'm guessing is in there in terms of metal) that is still solid and offers a great haptic experience and optical quality after half a century is just great. The ocasional flare doesn't bother me at all.

An Opinion Article

Monday morning, catching up on emails.

Found this opinion article from "The Photoblographer" interesting and couldn't see where it was posted on the forums so thought it was worth a share:

The Nikon Df Was Ahead of Its Time, Now We Need More Cameras Like it

Almost a deja vu moment; is this not skirting the values expressed in the recently published Pentax Vision? To quell the masses (and perhaps make the advert $$), the N's & C's have to be featured but the author does give positive light to the Pentax K-1ii.

My take away, there will never be a "perfect" one size fits all but some people will still contine to ask and continue to be disappointed. Wetting themselves each time a "new" trinket hits the street only to be disappointed when that model is trumped by the the next rendition of someone's technology. Pentax's vision of "joy" makes a lot of sense and perhaps they've led the pack (again, although that will never be acknowledged).

While I am quite happy with my K-1 I would like to see Pentax offer a mirrorless option.

After all, if I remember correctly the main reason Pentax are such a small player in the market these days is due to the fact they dismissed digital as a passing fad that would never overtake traditional film in the world of photography and refused to embrace the technology until it was nearly too late.

Deja-vu anyone?
