Ricoh/Pentax new strategy: Shift to e-Commerce and "studio-style" manufacturing

It is not just Apple, there are "IBM compatible" PC makers who offer that too - easy because such computers are made up from interchangeable components. In fact end users, me for example, can make them up themselves - would Apple sell the parts to allow that?

Of course, some film camera systems were customisable in that they were modular with some or all of : interchangeable viewfinders, film backs, motor drives, grips, and of course lenses. I don't think that is what Pentax has in mind however.

You've described why I have never had, and never will have, any social media accounts. And yes, I am old, 74 years' worth of old. And have been shooting and processing my own b&w for 59 of those years. We can teach younger analog newbies IF they choose to let us do so. It's similar to proselytizing your faith: You can respectfully and lovingly lay out what you know as truth, but you cannot force folks to believe it.

However the OP reported the problem only occurred with one of the lenses - and it was consistently that lens.

Untouched or post processing

I think there is a broad range of post processing that is done. Some is fairly aggressive and turns a normal image into digital art. Some is relatively gentle -- a little sharpening in spots and dodging and burning. The important thing, I suppose, is that the photographer is in control and is achieving the vision that they desire. More than that is hard to say. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what one person judges as overly aggressive another finds perfect.

There were even people who purchased pictures of Elvis on velvet, so there is that...

Does not work for me either. I am photographing since I was 6 or so, I was taught photography by my uncle who was photojournalist and I never used camera the way you describe. It was always look forward, both eyes open, target with one, observe world with another one.

Frankly it is first time I've heard about using viewfinder in the way you describe it :)

K-3 III fixed screen

I've worked in engineering design offices, and what happens is that someone, such as the company chairman or chief engineer, gets a bee in their bonnet about what a new design should or hould not have - often against the advice of middle management, the engineers and the marketing people. I think this must have happened at Ricoh/Pentax - someone senior did not see the need for a flippy screen and was d-mned why anyone else should need one either.

Nonsense. I did measurements on my K1 when we had last had this debate and reckoned it added about 4mm. FWIW I have often been in camera shops (when we had them) and overheard buyers considering camera choices. I never once saw one put a ruler to a camera. They did however fret over feature lists (whether they needed those features or not).

Not if it loses Pentax sales. A fixed screen has clearly been a deal breaker for a significant percentage of potential buyers. and Pentax can't afford that. Canon OTOH has a range big enough to cover all cases.

It is a problem if the plane of the screen is above your head, as it often is when I'm taking photos on a table top looking down (eg of documents, old photos). The alternative is a stepladder, which I had to use with my fixed screen K10-D.

How would you know how they are shot? As for film days, I had an LX fitted with a "waist-level" finder (which I used at eye level for that table top work).

I expect that had a lot to do with it. The retrospective "apologies" that Pentax have come out with are mostly BS. Their arguments about the K3iii's excellent viewfinder wouId logically requre the deletion of the live view screen entirely, not just deletion of its flipping. I think they have been taken aback by the flak and hopefully they have learned a lesson. They can't compete with mirrorless thin-ness so they should not try; they are in a different market now.

Having a flippy screen versus fixed screen is absolutely nothing to do with :

1) using a viewfinder versus using the live screen to compose. (I use the VF when possible, and someone prefering LV won't be prevented by the screen not flipping).
2) using a mirrorless camera versus a DSLR.
3) using video versus taking stills.
4) your nose. (They could make the eyepiece position and/or eye relief anything they/you want anyway)

K-3 III fixed screen

The Nikon D6 and Canon 1DX MkIII are low-resolution sports-oriented FF bodies. These bodies are made for a specific purpose. It's a strawman to compare the K-3 III to them.

The most comparable DSLR to the K-3 III is the Nikon D500, which has a moveable screen. Go up the ladder to a general-purpose body like the Nikon D850 - likely purchased by more "pros" than either the 1DX MkIII or Nikon D6 - and that camera also has a moveable screen.

In fact, all the flagship APS-C cameras on the market other than the K-3 III have moveable screens.

Anyway, the K-3 III is what it is, and Pentax wished to emphasize the OVF experience. Pentax may have misjudged the market... or perhaps their real mistake was in discontinuing the KP*.

* Was the discontinuation of the KP planned, or was it due to pandemic/supply-chain issues?

For me, I am a photographer who is also a grumpy old man. I still get down on the ground with my KP, but I have to lay down and because of physical limitations it's a struggle getting back up. And being 76 yoa it's not getting any easier.

It's the reason I didn't buy the K-3 III and chose to stick with the KP in the Pentax world.

Being a keen hiker, and having several Olympus weather sealed lenses, I used the money to buy an Olympus EM1 III instead (for it's portability, IBIS, weathersealing, burst rate, accurate focusing, and... fully articulated screen). I'm neutral regarding EVF/OVF.

That said, I don't think I'd ever sell my K-5II or old Pentax lenses. But the K-3 III without an articulating screen just wasn't compelling enough at $2000.

Exactly this question came to mind.

Also a tilt screen is very different from an articulated screen. Most of us who complained wanted a mini k-1 screen or a tilt mechanism like the KP or perhaps the Sony A99. Tilt screens offer waist level mechanical options that no wide view fixed screen can. The wide view screen also won’t let me look straight up into the downward pointing screen when shooting over a crowd. Live tethering via WiFi is awkward but allows a hands and knees shot to become a tripod or bean bag shot and a comfortable photog relaxing nearby controlling the camera. So fixed screen isn’t the end of the story but it really puts me off. I’m also not a big fan of fully articulated screens.

Maybe one of the six versions will have a screen that is articulating ?
From what I can deduct that would add another 40% to sales from us Pentaxians that are still waiting for our real "Flagship" model to finally arrive !

That leaflet is very cute indeed! Here the only thing I got was a 5-page document explaining everything in technical terms (ugh).

I cannot believe I know this only because of extensive experience with videogames and anime :D:D.

I am happy to report that the my colleagues at the broadcasting station in the north of the Netherlands are doing the best they can in reporting the on the current COVID situation and with very few exceptions the rest of the media are also doing the best they can. We don’t publish our COVID stories on Facebook anymore though because it attracts anti-vaccers like flies and they will do their utmost to distort the story and use it as a recruitment platform to get people to join their fight.

A few weeks ago we as reporters were asked to submit ideas and best practices about how to cover future violent protests safely. The amount of hostility directed towards journalists and authorities alike is staggering.

And yes we do put a lot of effort in reaching our public and while we do highlight stuff that peeks their interest most of the reporting that might trigger a emotional respons is on the burdens for business owners trying to survive the current lock down. But we also had a mayor on who was close too tears about his efforts to persuade his community with a below average vaccination rate to get vaccinated.

Personally I don’t do much reporting on Covid. Journalists are qualified as essential workers and are exempt from some of lock down rules and advices about travel and the amount of people that are allowed to gather. After a busy week with meeting some unmasked people in close quarters and using a busy ferry I told my dad that I would visit them this Christmas…outside! I’ll also do a rapid Covid test.

I can’t speak for the media in Canada and the US and most certainly not for Fox News but there are most certainly reliable voices out there amongst the more traditional media.

sharpest wide-normal for FA?

That was my first reaction, when I read the OP’s story. The DFA 50/2.8 macro is second only to the DFA*50/1.4 in terms of sharpness across the field, in my view (and I have both). It is a constant wonder to me why it hasn’t been brought up to date with WR sealing like the 100/2.8 macro, but that’s another story. Anyway, its price new is (in contemporary terms) a bargain, and secondhand even more so.

I think I can prove conclusively that I got my booster jab today, because a BBC local news reporter was doing his bit to camera at exactly the time I happened to be second in line in the queue.

Yep, that's me in the brown jacket. And I'd like to point out that I am NOT that fat! As you can see from the angle of the lamp posts in the background, the BBC cameraman was using a stupidly wide angle. My theory is that the cameraman hates the reporter, so he was using his widest zoom with the reporter right at the edge of the frame to make his head look as comically out of proportion to the rest of his body as possible.

I got Moderna this time, by the way. It was Pfizer for the first two, so it'll be interesting to see if I react any differently. I had nothing but a slightly sore arm with Pfizer.

You would most likely want to get the Photography plan and not the CC plan, the Photography plan cost half of what CC does, and still included LR Classic and Photoshop and several other apps. Less online storage, which I don't care about.
