K7 Night sky photography

I want try taking an image of the milky way. (All the rage now 😎)

Unfortunately, the camera doesn't seem to operate in that low of light. I turn the camera on, see the battery indicator for a moment, then the LCD screen goes blank. I tried several different modes with no success. When I'm back in a normal light setting, the camera operates as normal.

Is night photography not possible with this model? Or is there a setting I'm missing?
