I've been visiting this site for a while to learn about legacy lenses. I'm fascinated by the old manual glass - all of it, not just the stuff from Leica or Zeiss, but the old oddball stuff from Makinon, Sun, Sankor, and just about everyone else. I shoot a lot of macro, and occasionally shoot some clothing shots for a friend. Not because I any good at it, but because I actually know how to use a camera, not a phone. Anyway, if you want to talk old lenses, feel free to PM me!

Went camping in Death Valley National Park the other weekend. I got a few decent landscapes that I thought I'd share.

Flare comparison on the classic Pentax 28mms.

In my day to day usage of my old primes I have come to the conclusion that there isn't much gain from the improvements in coatings up to at least the A series (where my collection ends). So I thought I would do a comparison in a real life situation which is reasonably cruel to the lens. It is in full sun and although all lenses are hooded (with the same hood) the sun is still striking all over the front element. Combining this with presenting the white flowers against the green foliage I feel it is a reasonable test. Note the purple flare bottom just right of centre. The Takumar Bayonet certainly heats it up most but I feel it handles the whites of the flowers really well. And the poor old early model M 28 2.8 certainly shows why it has a low review score. Doesn't the Super Takumar stand up well. Maybe being half a stop slower helps it control flare.

This is also a beautiful photo AsahiGlass. I raly like the setting of the pier in the photo as well as how clean you got the shot. Night shots are always difficult (in my personal opinion) and you got a nice one.

Hi Jason,
It looks like the “season” also started in Kansas.
Good photo showing the Christmas fibes. Only the snow is somewhat low although more then overhere.
I really like that you went outside especially for this challenge. :)

I am always a bit amazed by the street numbering in the US, that is something you do not see (a lot) overhere

A very nice sunset today in Ibiza, and even better with some of my S-M-C Taks in the bag.

My main computer is a 2010 Mac Pro, maxed out on RAM and with a new Sapphire 7950 (MAC Edition) video card, running High Sierra. With the new video card, I can upgrade to Mojave. I’ll do that with the next incremental OS release. I am routinely able to run Lightroom, ON1 (2018 & 2019), and Photoshop simultaneously.

I use a 2012 Mac Mini as my main machine, but I still run a 2008 MacBook Pro with the High Sierra hacks for mobile work.

6 MB RAM, SSD boot drive, 750 GB 7200 RPM spinner in the optical drive bay.

Works fine for simple editing.

Spotmatic SPII & S-M-C 55 f1.8 - my first overhaul attempt

This was a $16 "As-Is" SPII from KEH. Other than needing the usual light seals mirror bumper, it had a corroded battery cover which I was able to free, fortunately the meter worked. Pulled the mirror box to access the lube points, cleaned & re-foamed the prism, focus screen, adjusted meter and checked shutter speeds - all good. It's now my favorite Spotmatic, Shot a roll of HP5+ through it last weekend, looked good - will post a couple of them soon, still scanning & processing.

Personally, this second one, while very busy, looks like some kind of painting... it might not be pleasing to the eye, but it has something that attracts me:

Landscape Durdle Door, B&W

Next week I'll be again working in Dorset, and this image (taken there during a Workshop One-on-One last December) came to my mind. This is the famous Durdle Door, but the sky that evening inspired me to go for a very long exposure, 200 seconds for a very dramatic B&W. Leica SL, Voigtlander 15mm Super-Wide-Heliar and Formatt-Hitech Firecrest filters.

Thank you for viewing, best regards

Night First "Decent" Astrophotography Photo

Hello,

This is my first post on the Pentax Forums. I've been using Pentax cameras for around 10 years now but haven't really given astrophotography a go before up until around 2 months ago.

This was taken last weekend and it's what I would call my first "decent" astrophotography image... I'd just like a little bit of critique if possible please and any pointers on something I could do better?

So, I've created this from a Lancaster night run and some re-enactor shots I've taken. I added the mist in CS6, now I can't decide if I've created a masterpiece or wasted 2 hours. Your input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Dealers won’t carry Pentax because RIcoh (and before that Hoya and before that Pentax and before that Asahi) doesn’t offer Dealer Credit. IOW, Dealers would actually have to buy Pentax inventory with real money, rather than accepting shipped inventory and a promissory note agreeing to pay for it in 90 or 180 days.

Gee, I wonder why B&M Dealers are so obsessed with inventory turn? They’re essentially running their businesses on Cash Flow with someone else’s money. High volume / low margin levered businesses are really great, right up until the next recession. Did you know Nikon was the largest creditor of Ritz Camera when they went under - $69,000,000! They were awarded Debtor in Possession status during the liquidation phase, and lost buckets of money. So did Canon.

Pentax didn’t lose a dime. I rest.
