FA 28mm is a good bet. I like it's output on APSC.

16-85 one-sided fuzziness in some images at the wide end

Mine does the same. It has been an issue since I purchased the lens years ago and was sent for repair. It was marginaly better when returned, but it is still very poor at 16mm, and weak up to 28mm (strangely 18mm seems ok). I have had better results using live view, and this makes me believe it is a focussing issue rather than a decentering problem. Every now and again I get a good result at 16mm, usualy if the subject is not too far away (an interior for example), but unfortunately I tend to avoid using this lens as I don't trust the results - unless it's raining!

Pentax KP screen not working when flipped out

A total failure of the screen is my concern now, not just when it is flipped. I often use the KP with the screen off whilst shooting anyway, but without access to menus etc it's curtains for one of my favourite ever cameras. I'm even considering supergluing the screen flat to avoid any further unecessary flexing of the cable. K3iii users must be wondering what all the fuss is about.

Thanks everyone. I think I will be taping the screen to avoid flexing the cable further and it stopping working all together. I love the camera and want it to last as long as possible.

KP screen black out when flipped.

Hello. A new problem with my three year old KP. When I flip up my screen even a fraction it blacks out. When the LCD is flat or tilted downwards it is fine. I have tried wiggling the ribbon cable a bit to see if is a loose connection with no luck. I have found reference to a couple of similar issues with the KP but few reports of fixes.Has anyone had a similar issue, and a potential remedy?

I like using my K70 handheld at night with a standard prime like my FA 28mm 2.8. Better still is the K1 with the same lens, or the FA 50mm 1.7. The full frame camera has a bigger and brighter viewfinder, the AF is a bit more effective in low light and the image stabilisation plus better grip allow for sharp exposures at very long shutter speeds.

Basic K-1 questions

My second hand K1, which had a very low shutter count, does experience what I guess is the sticky shutter thing once in a while. It tends to be the first shot if it hasnt been used for a few days. The image is black and the shutter only fires halfway. The following shots are fine. It doesn't happen very frequently and it's not a problem if I remember to do a quick test shot before it goes in the bag. I'm not sure how common this is, and please don't be put off, as the K1 is absolutely outstanding. I definitely recommend it for use with manual lenses.

Problem with SMC M35-70 F2.8-3.5

Hi, could it perhaps be caused by zoom creep? I had a copy of this lens and the heavy barrel would very slowly slide if the camera/lens was oriented downwards, even by just a little. This was only an issue for longish exposures.

Seems a reasonable price - go for it. It’s a great little prime lens, and if you need to sell it on at a later date I am sure you can at a similar price.

Hi, I really like the photos. Thanks for sharing them. I too went with a K70 to complement my GR2. Just recently got hold a used K1 - the best thing is it gives all of my film era lenses two 'focal lengths' dependěng on the full frame or APSC sensor. In a way it expands your lens collection without spending a penny on new lenses.

I find the electronic shutter the KP a very useful feature for silent shooting in cathedrals, churches, museums etc, so perhaps consider a quiet focusing zoom like the 16-85. It's also weather sealed for any rain you might encounter. One piece of kit I wouldn't do without, especially in the cities you may visit, is a mini tripod for nightime shots.

My original GR died in the same way a few years back and I immediately got a GRii to replace it. Unfortunately the GRiii still costs significantly more than the first two APSC models did, so I am unlikely to replace my GRii if/when it packs up.

Thanks, I will certainly have a look at this. Having come from the K70 and KP, I admit that I've not even looked at the manual yet. The K1 certainly shares a lot of features from my APSC cameras - I don't think my other half has noticed I've bought a new camera yet. If I keep my distance I reckon she will think its just my KP...

Thank you all for your replies. Sounds like the dial depends on the individual camera, and the shutter is operating ok (cheers grog85361). I had heard about early versions of the K1 having issues with the mode dial getting stuck in place, so just wanted to check. Cheers.

I just aquired a mint condition K1 with a 6020 shutter count. It has had two previous owners, so has experienced a nice easy life. I am loving it so far. Considering the light usage this camera has had and any potential issues in this regard, I have a couple of questions that I hope owners of either K1 model could answer:

1. Should the third function dial, the far right one, be stiff to turn? I have a KP and I am able to rotate this easily with my thumb. On the K1 it's a two fingers job.

2. Shutter sound: should there be a brief motor drive sound after the shutter has actuated? Again I am comparing this to my KP, which has a more 'mechanical' sounding shutter.

Many thanks.

Hello. One of my favourite photo books is Modern Color by Fred Hertzog. As photography books go it is very reasonably priced, and I think his work is outstanding.

SMC Pentax 55mm F/1.8 or Pentax-A 50mm SMC 1:1.7

The K55 1.8 is, in my opinion, optically better. As mentioned in an earlier post, it carries over the glass and coatings of even earlier Takumar lenses. The extra green button step to meter is a bit of a pain and does take away from my overall experience with this lens. The A1.8 doesn't require this, just focus and shoot in A mode.

GR III Sharpness

My GRII beats all of my Pentax lenses, not just in terms of sharpness, but also aberations, flare control and overall image quality. Thats not a critisism of my Pentax lenses, the GR lens is just that good. The closest I can get to the GR 'look' on my KP is with the fairly under rated FA28mm. Any wider and I tend to use the Ricoh. The 16mp GRii sensor might hide some of the lenses faults more than the 24mp on my KP/K70, and there is obviously no comparison in terms of the flexibilty and AF performance of my DSLRs, but until it inevitably stops working, my GR2 stays in my bag as my go to wide angle 'lens'.

PENTAX-DA 50mmF1.8 vs. SMC Pentax 55mm F1.8

I would pick the 50 1.8. I love my K55, and it certainly has superior image characteristics, but it doesn't get much use in comparison with the 1.8. Purely down to ease of use and AF, plus I am able to use the 1.8 without a hood due to the recessed front element, making it a lighter and more compact setup. I find manual focus quite enjoyable with the 1.8 too, nicely dampened for a modern lens.

How much focus dampening is there on the DA 50mm 1.8?

My 50mm 1.8 has a noticeably dampened focus ring. I really like it! From what you have described your copy should be fine.
