NFTs, the way of the future?

I have a scheme to create gold from seawater, breeding mules and also for a very great idea of progit for everyone but no one to know what it is. Dont fancy any of them, how about investing in tulips, very profitable.

Lots of people bought in to them already.

Ok it was a few hundred years ago and they all went bust in the end but bad ideas never really die, you just have to wait for the suckers and the mugs to forget how the game works.

To me anything without an intrinsic value based on physicality ( gold, vintage car, solid art ) is always a scam in the making. Scams dont mean people dont make money...some people always win in a scam but its always a scam none the less. See to many in my time that had lots of people convinced johoba oil for one.

Blacking? Flecking? what's the black stuff called on the inside of a lens?

Flocking in a telescope is more normally done with a felt that doesnt shed fibres. Its like a very fine but fuzzy felt.

The best non reflective paint is blackboard paint. It dries flat and very black, its used for a lot of astronomy optics as a reflection killer. Warning, if use you it then you need to stir it for a geologic age, it takes forever to mix, if you dont it dries shiney.

Hi Les, nice Nikons by the way......I went over my stored material and I cant find the article I read. I can recall the article as it was related go the escapement gear in the floor of the mirror box and it stated that the way the gear was set up in that location was one of the reasons Maitani disliked the final design.
Thats would seem an odd reason to dislike it as Maitani was reputed to like the Leica approach to things and apparenty thats where Leica put their escapements....dont know that for a fact never having owned a Leica much less messed about with one taking it to bits.
I cant find the article but as I generally only keep articles which are of use for repair thats not surpising. I did a quick search on links I have but cant find it but was definitely on a repair forum related to jammed slow speeds.

Or just buy a bag of tiny ball bearings off ebay. I bought a few bags recently for the princely sum of about £5

No idea what size the Taks may take. The ones I needed were 1.2mm

I used to work in sales and marketing for a big electronic company, we did all the shows relevant to our business and I would say, and did at the time, that they were a huge waste of cash.
By the time we had designed a stand, built it, manned it, removed it and gone home we could easily have spent half a million, more for some shows.
I never saw sales come out of trade shows and mostly the PR stuff like ‘abc corporation signs massive deal at trade show’ were either deals that had gone down already ahead of the show or were pure fiction.
We even deep faked product at shows to make it seem stuff worked when in fact it didnt.

When I was a grubbing sales person every few months we would get a bag of trade show leads and be asked to call all of the leads collected at trade shows. I never made a single sale of these leads and never knew any salesperson who did. Usually they were tyre kickers or the office junior on a free day out of the office.

Why bother ? Paranoia, the fear that if you didnt show up people will assume you are going bust or have exited the sector.

The worst of Craigslist/Shopgoodwill/eBay etc.

Well there is always cheaper, I was only talking the top end. A good K1000 could make close to £200 while a good Nikon FM3A will go over £500. Much will govern price like what lens is with it, condition etc.

Problem with eBay is half the sellers havent a clue and the buyers are not much better. Just sold a Nikon lens only to have the buyer want to return it cos ‘it doesnt fit my camera’ .........clueless or what.

Well I am not so sure the money is completely mad. A lot of lenses go to people adapting for digital but there is a resurgence of film. Hard to know why that is but I am grateful that its still around. A decent 35mm film camera will hit no more than maybe £200 to £500 depending on make, model, condition. That seems pretty reasonable compared to the open wallet surgery needed for most digitals :)

You can always have them recalibrated for a modern battery and then just use an adapator. I just use 675 hearing air batteries in mine with a brass adaptor. The batteries last about 3 months and they are cheap enough.

That yukky stuff showing theough the lens looks as if it has major problems with its prism. Either delamination or desilvering. Alternately its decayed crud on the focus screen....either would make it a non starter unless you happen to have a supply of spares. I love the way eBay sellers condidently state ‘could be repaired by somone who knows what they are doing’.....the same could be said for my car id is was wrapped round a tree but I wouldnt be asking the same price as a mint one.

How to clean an SLR mirror?

Blow clean first
Light brush with a very fine sable brush...very gently and stay away from the focus screen
Dampened Q tip with dilute IPA for grease or gunk, distilled water for streak marks.

I always so a breath test, breath on the mirror, watch as the fog clears. Fog will clear slowest over any residue the fog should clear evenly if the mirror is clean but dont get obsessive. Check the VF and if you can see no aberrations then its clean enough. Overcleaning is not good.

I kind of liked the badass look of the Nikon F, especially with the weird asymetrical meter head. When I. Ought into the F they were already obsolete but as the F2 was the one that people were upgrading to the originals were plentiful and cheap second hand. Believe it or not at the dawn of digital I sold both bodies and the lenses for a paltry £286 in p/ex for a pair of Canon D30s from recall. No one wanted them.

Have gone back to film and acquired most of the cams I used to shoot with I still feel more at home with the OMs though. The Minoltas are sleeker, the Nikons more robust and better made ( probably ) but theres just something about the OM. I like its simple VF. Just a meter needle and a HUGE view.

I have read that Matani was not happy with it and felt the engineering team had cut too many corners. I always found them reliable bavk in the day and my two were owned by an astro imgare in Alaska so when I got them they had been used for years under dark skies in Alaska...They ran ok but the meters were out of whack. I think that says something for reliability though.

I use old film canisters to store the sub assemblies, anything too big goes in a small jar with the film canister for the teensy parts.

I had an OM4 back when they were still being made. I started with an OM1 which was my first pro camera, bought a second one later on. Much later I moved to Nikon but one day in a moment of madness and feeling like I would maybe get some of the old magic back with a return to an OM I shelled out for an OM4 Ti.
Totally ended up hating it, it ate batteries like Smints. I always found its metering a bit suspect. Just ended up selling it off cheap in an part ex deal for another Nikon.

These days I have in the collection a pair of restored OM1s and its weird how I always get better pics with them than with anything else.....was the same back in the day.

Wll heres one for you....I shipped a motor drive to someone via courier over 60 days ago. Courier tracked it as far as the collection and then nothing. After 15 days of no updates the courier gives me a refund.
A couple of weeks later the tracking starts activating, shows it being transferred to a depot at the far end of the country and nowehere near where its supposed to be, a constant stream of tracking data all to completely the wrong area, recovered from delivery, transferred to a different depot, redelivered, recovered etc etc like a pinball. This goes on for a few days.

Then nothing......

Finally arrives back on my doorstep on Christmas eve with a note saying they were unable to deliver so returned to sender !!!!

Go figure.

Post across the planet is slow at the moment. I have a shipment of a container from China thats been sat on a ship since October. Loaded at Shanghai in October, got as far as Felixstowe and couldnt berth as no berths for it, had to lay off and wait. After ten days it got routed to Rotterdam, went to Rotterdam and couldnt berth there. Waited five days and finally went to Hamburg. Container offloaded but no lorries available so had to be put on another ship for consignment to Thames Gateway. Ship got there and managed to offload. No capacity to handle the container so its been sat there since start of December.

Meanwhile post using RM is slow taking up to 10 days.

One item being handled by a courier has taken 30 days end to end on a 4 day service.

Problem with web reviews is a few hundred people moaning can make a service look bad, but, you have to balance it against the millions of people who are shipping stuff around with no issues. When was the last time any of us got a letter delivered and thought ‘gee I am going to go to a review site and give a review on how amazing it was to get a letter delivered’ ? We just take it for granted until it goes wrong.

I’d bet your lens will arrive.

Back in the day I owned a pair of Fujica 605s as beaters for places where I mah not want to risk a Nikon plus because they were M42 mounts it allowed me to use a huge range of glass.

I only do film and my beaters change periodically. Did have a Chinon CM3, then a CE5. Current beater is a Minolta X700.

So long as the fungus hasnt etched the glass it should clean off with some peroxide. You may need to disassemble the rear element to get at it.

I picked up a nice old thing, not Pentax, but the silver finish has some serious chipping exposing the brass beneath. The chips arent huge or many but they are deep like its been hit with something sharp thats penetrated the outer paint. Has anyone ever touched up the silver finish and got an invisible repair thats durable ?

Tamiya silver seems a good match but I am not so sure an acrylic is durable enough.

Normally I would leave brassing from wear but these are quite unsightly and it would be nice to get her beautiful again.
