Best lens to buy for Pentax MX??

Hi guys,

I am going on a trip in November, I would like to bring my Pentax MX with me and am wondering what'd be a good lens to buy and why? I'll be travelling to Japan, and it'd be better to have an all around good lens, as I won't want to be spending time changing lenses, because I'll be wanting to see it all!

The next question is whether anyone has any recommendations for a good Lumix G3 lens for the same reason, I want to bring a DSLR and an SLR because I want to take as many pics as possible!

All the best and thank you for your help

Hello from Harrow, England!

Hi there!

I am currently living in Harrow, England (not exciting or exotic, I am aware.) But it is where I call home whilst I finish my third year of uni. Currently studying at Westminster university, doing a BA Film course, I am in my final year, soon (of 3).

I joined the forum initially to post a review about Robin Gowing, who recently did some fantastic service work on my camera, I am very very pleased indeed!

I wanted to introduce myself and admit that I am very very new to 35mm SLR cameras, but I absolutely love my 35mm camera and am infatuated with the art of taking celluloid pictures instead of digital ones. I hardly touch my DSLR now, unless it is related to the course! :p

(Just noticing that I started all the paragraphs with 'I'...haha oops :o) and now again, I work in the Kodak Lab at Pinewood, it is a small wonderful team of 6 mainly, whom I consider to be my second family. It is recent, as I only started over summer after doing 2 weeks there but I love it. Not only do I prep the machine in the morning to test it before film rushes come in to be developed, but I also run the test myself and can determine whether or not the machine is good to go! Mainly though, my job title is 'Neg Assembler' as I assemble feature film rushes to be sent off to Pinewood post to be scanned.

Lastly, I would love to go into the film industry, with my passion (unsurprisingly) lying in cinematography. The end goal for me would be to become a Director of Photography and at the moment, I am currently in the pre-production stages of shooting a commercial at uni. It is part of the Kodak 16mm competition in which products are put forward and you have to make a 30 second commercial for one of them. Our idea is quite ridiculous! When it's done I can post the link for people to check it out !

Please say hello

Thank you for such a lovely welcome to the forum!

I can confirm that Robin does indeed take on jobs still, I was worried he might not especially if he saw the amount of work needed on my camera, but was very very happy when he agreed - considering each job may take around 10 days, and mine was just over?

I won't lie and say that I wasn't deflated when I saw the £180 leave my bank account, but if I think about how little people there are around still servicing film cameras? I can't really complain that although technically retired, Robin still gave up his time, and he has done a wonderful job!

I'm glad I have it back, I really missed it and am excited to be able to use it again :D thank you for the support guys!!

Hi team!

I am new to this forum, but wanted to create a user to be able to post this review! My pentax MX stopped working around my birthday and i was so devastated, I was scared to send it off but also didn’t know where to. I live in London, so I assumed somewhere would be able to help - after much research I stumbled upon Harrow Technical ( what LUCK!) turns out that Robin Gowing, who does the repairs had actually retired (dreams crushed instantly.)

So, I persisted and emailed anyway, asking if they could suggest anywhere else or what I should do / should I just get another camera only for me to realise I’m emailing the man himself.

He offered to take my camera on, fix it not only from the problems it was having but also return it to it’s factory settings. He replaced the focus glass and sent it back, all for just under £200.

I was so pleased when I got it back because the shutter speed dial in the viewfinder didn’t match the actual dial and now it does, I tested it and it worked!

I’m extremely chuffed for the worn done here and want to say a huge thank you to Robin again and I would recommend him to anyone!

Thank you for taking the time to read,
Lauren <3
