Replacing Stolen K-1 and 4 lenses

I've only shot with the Pentax 100mm lens on my K-1 II that was stolen so I can only really comment on how the two different combinations work. I have some good shots from the Pentax. And I liked how light the lens was. The overall setup on the Sony feels heavier but I get better consistent focus using the focus magnification system in manual focus and of course the sensor allows for some very tight crops while retaining a good resolution. I think I see some small amount of vignetting with the Sigma lens occasionally, easy to correct. Since I was replacing the lens seemed to make most sense to go with an E-mount lens and the Sigma price seemed pretty reasonable for that purpose...if I hadn't lost the Pentax macro lens I probably would have been happy to keep using it on the Sony.

I replaced a Pentax 100 mm macro with the Sigma so some experience with macro. Paired with the Sony A7RV and the manual focus magnification I've been really enjoying what it's producing whether in macro mode or not.

I am very pleased with the decision. The resolution is really something, I can’t believe the detail it captures in some of landscape shots I’ve taken. The magnification feature for manual focus is also a great plus to ensure sharp macro focus. The AF system is taking some time to learn given all the options and complexity but that more about lost opportunity to use the tech than not taking shots like I would have with the Pentax. I really haven’t used the AI AF much yet though that is one of the big selling points. USB-C charging of the camera was handy when travelling. Haven’t used the video yet but plan to for my video work. Tried out the focus stacking feature which was easy to use. Really just getting into custom buttons and menus, there’s a lot of capability.

I have only seem upside and no downside on the switch from Pentax to Sony, don’t miss the optical viewfinder at all. I had the K-1 II for almost five years and enjoyed it, got a lot of good shots but this camera is obviously better in many ways in terms of user experience and capability. It also provides a path to future improvements in technology. I upgraded my Pentax body numerous times over the 18 years I was shooting Pentax digital but there has been no opportunity to do that with K-1 II in the five years I’ve had it….not because technology wasn’t changing in the market place but because Pentax really didn’t have the resources to go further with their full frame and not moving to mirrorless limits the technology they can put into it. I’m glad I was in Pentax for those years, great tech like IBIS for a reasonable price and excellent lenses with a ton of great photographs. But that technical/price advantage isn’t there any more because of the lack of technological development and the brand does feel like a dead end to me in a way it didn’t five years ago. I understand why people love their Pentax cameras and lenses, I did too. This was an expensive move that without the theft it would have been more difficult to decide, but it was clearly the right choice now that I’ve experienced this new camera, it would have been a real waste for me to have re-invested in Pentax I believe.

Yes I did as the insurance company paid for the stolen lenses too. Sony SEL FE 35mm f/1.4 GM E-Mount, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens & 85mm f/1.4 DG DN HSM Art Lens, Lens Baby Composer Pro II with Sweet 50 optic. Also bought a Peakdesign backpack to replace the stolen Lowepro Messenger bag. Still have 200mm and 300mm Pentax lenses, one of the advantages of the Monster adaptor is it overcomes the wonky SDM on those lenses.

Shouldn't have done it, left my camera bag in the back of a rented SUV at park in Richmond CA for an hour. Came back and the rear passenger window was smashed, camera bag with iPad Pro, my clothes and my companion's backpack all stolen. The iPad showed up in China two weeks later according to find my device. Home insurance covered everything at replacement value with a 1K$ deductible. So my decision was to replace my K-1 II, 31mm, 85mm, 100mm and lens baby sweet 50 with what was stolen or use the opportunity to shift to Sony. It was hard to decide after have used a Pentax DSLR (five different bodies) since 2005 and using Pentax analogue back in the 70s. Went with a Sony A7RV, paying a premium vs a K-1 II but the insurance essentially subsidized a chunk of the purchase and I also invested in a Monster adaptor for my remaining Pentax Lenses. I'm very happy with the decision after a few months though the complexity of the AF means a steep learning curve but mostly I feel invested in a future technology that will continue to develop. Many great years with Pentax and probably wouldn't have left if this hadn't happened but seems like the right thing for me.

I'd like to thank those who suggested the trying the AF on the SDM failed lens several times and using live view as well. my lens started working and avoided me going the convert to screw drive route. a bit of perseverance was all it took and I never would have thought of that. so my 200mm lens now works perfectly. thanks.
