Have you played with different shooting speeds? The K-3 III offers three different speeds in continuous.

Doot do-doot news flash. Canon is one of the patent holders in the consortium. Of course, they're going to back a format from which they're expecting royalties, no matter the merits.

HEIF is backed by a litigious consortium, so is unlikely to get good widespread support any time soon. There are tools to convert it to JPEG. Oh, wait...

Unless you have a source for that, I'll assume that this is just circulated research that I and presumably others have done based on the fact that it's the only market-available 26 megapixel CMOS sensor. Ricoh's various spec sheets refer to it as "CMOS". This leads some people to assume it is not a BSI sensor, which of course is nonsense but may be the reason why we're having this debate.

If that's true, then DPReview just misreported it. The press release refers to "a completely round-shaped diaphragm". Unclear if that means they changed the curvature of the blades in some way.
I haven't studied aperture mechanisms in detail, but it would seem impressive to me if the aperture were exactly circular at every aperture setting.

Sony's IMX571 is the only currently publicly known 26 megapixel APS-C sensor, and is a BSI model. Pentax announced the K-3 III would have a 26 megapixel sensor.

I don't understand what that's trying to say. Not "welcome"? "Don't improve my product"?

Adding a big motor to a lens prized for its compactness makes no sense to me.

The database doesn't mention it, and having rounded blades wouldn't have been nearly as much of a "thing" back then as it is now.

Are you saying that from Ricoh's perspective or the consumer's?
In my opinion, adding WR or AW sure would further increase desirability of these reboots.

That makes a lot of sense. I think Ricoh has been fairly good overall at adjusting to industry and market during COVID-19.

Iirc, the 31 was at $799 briefly, for about a month or two, might be two years back now or so. New below used, at that time. Used started dipping a little bit shortly after that, but it was all over as soon as the "new" price went back up.
Never quite figured out why that happened. I reasoned it must have been a stock clearance rumour.
Interestingly, it used to be claimed at various times that FA Limited were just being sold from the warehouse, no running production. If an HD version is coming, that's obviously now untrue, for the time being.

Just to clarify, I wasn't being cynical. I vaguely remembered that something like this existed. I think what I saw earlier was a more basic, command line thing compared to fs999's GUI effort.

But do you have evidence that the "Japan" solenoid is still in production? ---------- Post added 12-28-20 at 09:26 AM ----------
I keep hearing that it was slightly improved for the K-70, yet still fails, just not as quickly. The argument that Teflon should be used seems quite convincing, but I don't see evidence that Shinmei is willing to change materials or open a new production line for a Teflon solenoid - or that Ricoh is willing to shell out to make this happen for Shinmei, or take production into their own hands (patents?). ---------- Post added 12-28-20 at 10:06 AM ----------
Between the K-70 and KP, I'm struggling to find evidence of this. The KP weighs 703g with battery and card, the K-70 688g, a difference of 15 grams, or 2.1%. The KP may have a lighter flash unit (GN 6 rather than GN 12). Battery life almost exactly the same. The extra size of the KP is mostly in the prism housing, which has nothing to do with solenoid vs. stepping motor.
Do we know the unit cost of a solenoid vs. a motor?

There is a version of the Miranda that is externally near-identical. Same focus throw, same filter size, same grippy nibs (four rows), same aperture ring, very similar markings - as close as I can tell without holding them both in my hands, obviously! That doesn't answer the question, as Miranda did not make lenses, but maybe it gets us one step closer to the real answer.

If I understand what photogem is saying correctly (and what you are saying), then when the company transferred production from Japan to China, it also abandoned the "Japan solenoid" Teflon design in favour of the presumably cheaper alternative, PET. If the Teflon variant is out of production, I wonder if Ricoh would be willing to purchase a sufficient volume to make it worth setting up the needed assembly line at the new plant.
Alternatively, wouldn't a better plan from Ricoh's perspective be to transfer all body tiers to the stepping motor?

My understanding is that the magic of aperture coupling, in those cameras were it was fully working, was that the camera could meter correctly without needing to stop down based on knowing what aperture it was at and what it would be stopped down to. This magical way of working is why people want it back.
Compared to your m42 example, the advantage is that you wouldn't have to look through a stopped down lens in the VF - or to focus first with aperture open, then stop down to meter, which, yes, you can do manually on m42, but it's still an extra step and violates the "don't make me think" principle. ---------- Post added 12-27-20 at 06:43 PM ----------
Hmm... I'm not sure exactly what to think. One of the reports for the 8-16mm Sigma complains of the problem, states using the K-3 but does not state that the problem is absent on the K-3: Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database
He does say he also uses the K-5, but if you're listing it as not working, it would seem to make sense to also state if one of your cameras is an exception.
The other four reviews that complain of the problem do not list the camera used.

Interesting challenge. I feel like I've seen that exact lens before, and if I did, it was definitely not under that brand name. Can't quite place my mind's finger on it, though.
