Sticky: A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY: Development of the solenoid in Pentax cameras

But do you have evidence that the "Japan" solenoid is still in production?

---------- Post added 12-28-20 at 09:26 AM ----------

I keep hearing that it was slightly improved for the K-70, yet still fails, just not as quickly. The argument that Teflon should be used seems quite convincing, but I don't see evidence that Shinmei is willing to change materials or open a new production line for a Teflon solenoid - or that Ricoh is willing to shell out to make this happen for Shinmei, or take production into their own hands (patents?).

---------- Post added 12-28-20 at 10:06 AM ----------

Between the K-70 and KP, I'm struggling to find evidence of this. The KP weighs 703g with battery and card, the K-70 688g, a difference of 15 grams, or 2.1%. The KP may have a lighter flash unit (GN 6 rather than GN 12). Battery life almost exactly the same. The extra size of the KP is mostly in the prism housing, which has nothing to do with solenoid vs. stepping motor.

Do we know the unit cost of a solenoid vs. a motor?

If I understand what photogem is saying correctly (and what you are saying), then when the company transferred production from Japan to China, it also abandoned the "Japan solenoid" Teflon design in favour of the presumably cheaper alternative, PET. If the Teflon variant is out of production, I wonder if Ricoh would be willing to purchase a sufficient volume to make it worth setting up the needed assembly line at the new plant.

Alternatively, wouldn't a better plan from Ricoh's perspective be to transfer all body tiers to the stepping motor?

Hi Li, welcome to the forum. I think you did well to go with something compact and a little bit basic (that I hope was quite affordable, as well). Too many jump in with a big initial purchase and are then locked out of better options (better for their specific needs). Once you figure out what you like or don't like about the experience, I'm sure we can advise you further.

Just one - I think essential - comment on this.

As long as a fair number of people are wearing masks, there is a much reduced risk of pneumonia and/or flu. I know a lot of people do not behave sensibly, but I still think we won't see much of a flu season this year.

If you want to protect yourself against a disease that is likely to actually affect you this season, the COVID shot is the more important one to get.

Which camera for Astrotracer function?

It's a separate microprocessing unit ("chip") on the camera's motherboard that reduces noise, improves dynamic range, and adjusts saturation in high sensitivity images (high ISO). For the Pentax KP, it was a large part of the reason the camera competed very favourably against full frame models from other manufacturers, and it may in large part be the basis of Pentax' claim that the new camera (K-3 III) will be similarly competitive in image quality, maybe even more so.

Two separate settings for NR have existed since at least the K-5. @JPT: You will see that your K-5 II has two separate settings as well. They may not be the exact same settings, but it seems likely they are.

Thanks for the translation. I'm not sure the standard disclaimer has much weight at this point - two months isn't a lot of time to stockpile, and there've been plenty of delays, so with a probability of about 99.9%, they would have been handling the version of the camera that is also probably rolling off the lines as we speak.

---------- Post added 12-22-20 at 06:31 PM ----------

It might - they said in product story #7 that they shaved 1/3 off the shutter lag relative to the K-3 II. I crunched the numbers of what that works out to:

No, those are the shots that there is space for on the card(s). As you shoot, the camera counts down based on an estimate of how big your files are going to be. In my experience, you always end up fitting a lot more shots onto the card than it estimates at the beginning, so it's a worst case estimate and once it knows the size of the file, it updates the count.

I was thinking in terms of keeping them available for people that haven't updated their equipment, or also in case you might buy additional (used) units later.

---------- Post added 12-23-20 at 06:11 PM ----------

We've already discussed several possible options for this.

1) In the absence of an internet connection, an older available file *might* be used. (Not sure this has been definitively confirmed one way or the other.)

2) You can redirect traffic to localhost and pull the files from a server on your local machine. This will only fail if a secure connection with non-reproducible certificates is required, which I suspect not to be the case.

This would obviously future-proof things additionally.

Pentax K-3 Mark III - First Hands-on

This is a very good question. This is mostly to do with the accelerator unit. It's a distinct processing unit found on the motherboard inside the camera - see image half way down this page.

I can tell you a little bit of how it works in the KP, as I've looked at those files the most.

In the KP, the accelerator has three consequences, reduced noise, increased dynamic range, and saturation compensation. The first two may not be independent of each other, while the latter was specifically added in the KP and is not present in the K-70. You can see an example half way down this page.

My understanding is that it's based on exploiting statistical properties to distinguish noise from signal. It seems that the chip needs to be specifically configured for every new sensor model, and may behave a little differently in, say, the KP and K-1 II. (As I said, it doesn't do saturation compensation in the K-70, so of course it behaves differently there.)

Whether the sensor in the K-3 III is particularly well suited for the kind of image quality improvement the accelerator can give, or whether the accelerator itself has been significantly improved, I'm sure we'll hear more about in due course, but I believe this is the basis on which they're saying that image quality of the K-3 III will be competitive with full frame.

I really do think they're positioning this camera as a mirrorless killer, and so making it as thin as possible may have been a design goal.

Another piece of good news is that the silver version was also shown. Might be a hint that it will be released at the same time, something they weren't sure of in that interview/live event earlier in the year.

Has anybody figured out what settings were used? (I'm working down the thread and replying as I go or I won't make it before my hopeful bedtime.) I would hold off on conclusions until the settings are known. FWIW, buffer depths for all the continuous shooting speeds were published as part of the spec list in the development progress report. I'm not going to say any more on it, or it's holy war all over again.

I would be very surprised if a third party generic one doesn't already exist.

One thing to note is that at least some smartphones use WiFi triangulation for determining position. This can improve accuracy of GPS and works even where satellites are blocked, e.g. by buildings. Useful in cities.

Which LCD? If you mean the top one, there's a picture at this link that shows it compared to the K-3 II.

Thank you for your comments. I now count four people in this thread alone who've expressed a clear preference for a disabling option.

To those who fear that the unwashed might unwittingly disable the function and then conclude the camera produces a noisy image, I would point out that the same applies to IBIS. It may not be common knowledge, but cameras from the last ten years or so have been able to detect when they're on a tripod, and disable IBIS automatically in that situation. So for the great unwashed, the same problem arises: IBIS could be accidentally disabled (you can still do that in the menus), and blurry images could then be taken. And yet, accidental IBIS disabling does not seem to be a widespread problem. It seems to me the worry is unfounded.
