HD 77mm f/1.8 LTD!

I thought there was something about "HD" coatings being easier to apply than SMC which is part of why they were developed. This is probably at least part of why the price was reduced for the 77 HD FA.

I think it's odd to suggest that it's not possible to make a WR (or AW) in-lens-motor version of the 77. It wouldn't look at all the same when they were done but lifting the optics block out of the FA 77 and building an entirely new housing around the lens seems very doable. It would undoubtedly gain weight and size over the existing version. I kind of like that they didn't bother with that.

The black version of this lens would probably look great on my black MX...

Does wind chill mean anything to a Pentax? (KP example)

The grip is no joke. KP was with me a whole week in pretty nasty conditions some three years ago and I had to keep it outside continuously. No way it would survive the condensation which a well insulated jacket will instantly cause if kept inside the jacket between exposures. The grip is solid when attached properly and provides a backup shutter trigger. Yes, the main shutter trigger of KP is the one which may fail before the photographer in extreme cold.

There it is, KP after a long day outside. We stopped as our camera could not be operated any longer. They were covered in hoarfrost, none of the dials could be turned and no buttons responded to presses. Lenses and filters had a thin veil of frost which messed up the photos (no contrast). Well, cellphones worked in some way although it was not possible to recharge them.

Windchill effect was such that -30C temp felt like -50C after the sun went down. It is the wind which makes the hoarfrost to stick in cold and humid conditions.

Sticky: A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY: Development of the solenoid in Pentax cameras

Thanks for everyone who posted here. I was having the same aperture issue with my K-X and decided to take a leap of faith and crack open the camera. I had ordered the "white solenoid" from Japan in the hope of finding the green one when I open the body. To my surprise, the K-X I have already had the white one.

And since there was no picture out there that clearly shows where exactly it sits, I took that picture below. You can now clearly see it as soon as the plastic body is removed. Tip: note down where screws go as there are about 5 different sizes.

Since the wires and solder dots are microscopic I did not yet want to replace the solenoid with another white one. What I ended up doing instead is remove the tape holding the wires, unscrew the solenoid in place and leave it wired. Once the solenoid is lose, you can pull it apart in two pieces, where the "bottom part with no screw" (left side of it, looking at the picture) can be removed and tapped on a table to remove some remnants of magnetic field. Then put everything back together.

Just doing this did the trick for me. I still have the spare white solenoid in case this small operation was not enough and I have to put the new one in place.

The K-1 lets you select 8 mm. Whether it works well or not, I can't say - my widest lens is 20 mm.

Depends of course on a few other factors as well:
- capacity of Eneloops
- age of Eneloops
- how is the camera used, i.e. a lot with LV (liveview) (which drains a lot), video (which is in LV mode and drains even more)

The new type Eneloops (PRO or XX with 2500mA) are really great.

I use OpTech's Hood Hats on all my lenses. Works with lens, hoods (even petal style), etc. Keeps the lens end safe. Easy to put on/remove.

The camera has to know both the full aperture and the chosen aperture not to need to meter stopped down.

Really? How about any of the K/M/A 100mm f4 macros or the FA 100mm f3.5. All maximum 0.5x magnification.

Added - the K/M 50mm f4 macros also.

The lenses that work well reversed are not necessarily the ones that are particularly good used normally, and vice versa. Although a lens that is exceptional for both is the "K series" SMC Pentax 1:3.5 28mm. Here's an example, reversed on a bellows to give about 4:1 magnification (on a crop-sensor K10D, so the image represents about 4mm by 6mm of subject):

Compiled from a focus stack of 68 exposures. Here's an ordinary shot (Sigma 70mm macro) of the same moth:

Pentax K-3 Mark III - First Hands-on

It didn't stop there though, many others chose to keep expressing their disappointments.
As you say, cars and bikes didn't have gears, earlier Pentax cameras didn't have so many AF points, or a dedicated joystick to control them, or as many megapikles in a aps-c, or the best ever OVF in a aps-c camera.

only reason I'm responding, is to address the comments made after this.

There you go, bashing it again.

" They made a mistake, that's all. I'll wait until they correct it in K-3iii 0.1"

Just like you did to the K-1, I do have a memory, and remember all your comments as to why aps-c so so much better than FF,why you wouldn't get a FF, and the pixel density of the crop frame and frame rate ect ect ect, rememeber that???? and even your signature that stated all formats had there compromises, and aps-c was your choice, then, later you bought a K-1 and changed your signature.

No need to answer or deny it, we both know the truth of that.

and just for the record , from the dictionary

Deny - state that one refuses to admit the truth or existence of.

He says , It's a mistake, he says the Nikon D500 is the only viable option.
A flippy screen, in a Camera designed to be a sports and action camera...... a sports and action camera with Pentax's best ever aps-c OVF and Pentax's best ever AF with 101 focus points...........

Lets read on..

"Nikon D500", Still , more expensive than the projected price of the K-3iii, yet, no astrotracer, and only aps-c.... yet you want the features of both the K-3 and K-1.

"Cutting features from the K-3 series."...... K-3 series, never had a flippy screen, K-3ii cut onboard flash, and put a GPS and astrotracer function onboard, obviously a step down from the K-3, it had a flash.

"Exodus of people leaving Pentax, Nikon is a better option, too expensive. K-3 is reduced to action and bird photography...Will there be enough people to buy this camera.."

Yes, there will be enough buying this camera, including Norm, later on, when he buys it.

Funny, in all the pre-release advertising for the K-3iii, OVF orientated , action and sports camera, that's exactly what they say they are making in the K-3iii. this is obviously about sports and action photography, with the latest AF , 101 focus points, a dedicated joystick for controlling the AF , the best ever OVF in a aps-c camera.... best ever OVF ...... Optical View Finder.... Liveview.... obviously, not an issue in the design of the camera.

Firstly, Rondec, I highly respect you as a forum member and have always been a watcher of your posts, and your takeup on new gear .

You , were a first uptaker of the DFA 24-70, when it was only a aps-c option, no K-1 released.

K-1ii, has been a very high high seller, bringing many from the other brands to Pentax, the accelerator, is now a mute point, look at the baked in raw in Nikon and Canon Mirrorless cameras ... are you really that unsatisfied with your K-1ii????? I've seen so , so many stunning photos from the K-1ii I'm both unsure it"s such a issue and whatever Pentax has done, is all about photos.

KP, I believe there would be more than a few, heck, 1000's that would say the ergonomics are are anything but horrible..., and it has a flippy screen. I would have one yesterday, but, I just don't have the extra money.

I , bought the DFA 50/1.4. It's stunning, Have you seen the price and size of the latest high end ( high end ) 50mm/1.4 lenses from Nikon and Canon, and Sony? Also, have you seen the sales of the DFA85/1.4 ???

Pentax , will sell lots of this camera, and with so many users from Nikon and Canon, being unhappy with the shift to mirrrorless as a focus, we may very well see even more people migrating over to Pentax. With all the features tested in the K-3ii, that melded into the K-1 , imagine the what is coming in the K-1-iii

And , Yes, Pentax will turn a profit from its sales,

I'm sorry if I have offended anybody by my comments, but, I'm just calling it as I see it .

Lets all just wait till this camera actually gets released, lets see what it actually is. Lets not be daisy cutters before it sees the light of day.

That the RGB-Sensor is used in OVF mode for Face Detection is nothing new for Pentax. It has been in Pentax cameras for a long time. What would be new is that with a menue setting you would be able to say "look for faces". That is present in competition high end cameras but not in Pentax cameras to date.

They clearly consider the in camera editing an important feature. The touch screen will help with editing and setting the camera up. It#s time separated from taking the photo.

Edit: that guy in the interview video sure was confident changing lenses on a Pentax. Not a seconds hesitation. Anyone know who he is? Bordeaux red suit guy that is.

Yes it gets tedious watching old men try to out alpha one another with their subjective opinions on a camera. Esp when we've had this argument (on the back screen) at least 3 times already at long length.

They explained why in one of the videos. I accept their logic, even if I would have preferred a rear screen like the K-1’s. I used my K-3 with a smart phone for low-level shooting, quite easily (high-level is a bit more complicated). People need to work with it or buy something else.
