SD Card Folders: Lost & Found

On my K-3 II, I shoot RAW with SD card #1 and JPG with SD card #2. Unless I am traveling away from my laptop, at the end of each shooting day I: 1) take out the two cards; 2) insert them into my laptop's SD card reader; 3) delete any images from the SD cards that I do not wish to preserve; 4) copy the day's folders to my laptop's hard drive for post-processing; 5) eject and re-insert the SD cards into their respective slots on the camera.

Recently, I was noticing that when I put my camera into playback mode to look at a previous day's folders, all the folders had disappeared. This happened on both cards, in both slots. The only folders my camera could read were photos that I had taken that particular day. But when I popped out the SD cards and read them on my laptop, the laptop would properly "see" and read all prior folders and their respective contents.

Hmmm. Why couldn't my K-3 II "see" the folders that were clearly still there and visible to my laptop?
I tried reformatting the cards in the K-3 II. No difference. I tried using new, newly formatted, brand-name SD cards. Still no difference. I started thinking there might be some kind of failure in the camera's file management software/hardware.

Oh dear.

I decided to post my issue here. To help make my post clearer, I grabbed a screenshot of one of the SD cards when it was mounted on my laptop.

The screenshot shows the subfolders present on SD Card K-3 II, under the general DCIM folder. The laptop sees 6 folders. If I clicked on any of those folders, the laptop would properly display the individual photo files. When re-inserted into my camera, however, the camera would only see the folder furthest on the right: 125_0227. It would only display the individual photo files within that single folder.

So, what was different about the other five folders? The screenshot easily showed me. Last fall, after getting back from a two-week trip away from my laptop, in the course of my workflow, I had introduced a step 3a: adding "RAW" or "JPG" to the folder names on the SD card to indicate that I had reviewed them and the keepers within them were ready to be transferred to my laptop. I had so many folders to process that I thought I could keep better track of what I had already reviewed. But once renamed in that way, the camera could no longer see the folders I had, indeed, processed.

Once I remounted the SD cards on my laptop, then removed the "RAW" or "JPG" letters added to the original folder names, then reinserted the cards into my K-3 II, then camera could again see all those earlier folders.

Moral of the story: if you want your camera to continue to display folders from prior days' shooting, don't change the folders' names.

It’s the same one I bought. It’s a beautiful lens in great condition. Takes lovely pictures. But after comparing it to my 150-450, I decided to stick with the shorter, lighter, more versatile zoom. I couldn’t afford to keep both lenses and I saw more opportunities with the zoom for the kinds of photos I take. So, have at it folks!

I rather like DCU5. I bought a Late 2021 M1 (Apple Silicon) MacBook Pro back in June. It came with Mac OS Ventura. I'm now not likely to upgrade to Sonoma any time soon.

Just pulled the trigger on this. I’ve bought from MPB several times before so am confident that they have properly rated it “ Excellent.”

I picked up a late 2021 14” Macbook Pro. It’s only running the M1 Max chip, but has 64gb of unified memory and 2 TB of SSD storage. Both of these features will be more useful to me than the newer M2 chip and a comparable configuration with the newer chip was way beyond my budget.

Back button focusing - K-3 vs K-5II/s

I have both a K-5iis and a K-3 II. I prefer the K-3ii's location of the back AF button. To me, it feels like a shorter and more natural thumb movement, leaving the camera feeling better balanced in my hand. I also prefer that it's a stand-alone button instead of sitting inside another dial as it is on the K-5iis. The kicker for me is the position of the AF button on the grip. The AF and Green Button on the two grips are reversed. On the K-5's grip, the Green Button is above the position of the AF button. If you're a big green button user, then maybe you'd like the relatively easier access to that button on the K-5's grip. But I use the AF button much more than the green button. For that reason, I prefer the K-3's grip.
Just to be clear, I'm quite happy with my K-5s (I have both the K-5 and the K-5iis). The position of the AF buttons doesn't enter into my mine when I decide which camera I want to shoot with on any given day.

I was tempted to pick up one of the HD 20-40mm Ltds until I read one of the recent (January 2023) user reviews. That user similarly bought a refurbished copy from Ricoh and has been experiencing a "sticky barrel" for a year and a half.

Crop indication

Without resetting my own Smart Functions, I'm guessing that what you're seeing in the optical viewfinder is simply the indication that "Crop" is the Smart Function that you currently have enabled. That's why the "inscrutable codes in the top LCD ... says ... 4:CROP/1." That confirms that cropping is one of the 5 functions that you've set and the one you most recently used (or scrolled to, advertently or not). I think it also means that the crop factor is "1", which is why you are seeing no actual effect on your pictures.

I’d stick with the PLM version she bought. The one on sale seems to be the older, non-PLM version. Looks like the PLM version is on sale, too, but at $349.95.

Welcome!

I don't have a K-70, but I have both of the lenses you bought. They are the two that I use the most. (I also frequently use the H DA 35 mm (Macro) F/2.8. A beautiful prime with 1:1 macro capabilities.)

The K-70 E book is probably as good a place to start as any if you are new to Pentax DSLRs. (I have the corresponding ones for my camera. Much more "narrative" than the official Owners Manuals.)

Pentax eBook Downloads - Now on PF! (purchase here for instant access) - PentaxForums.com
I'd also make sure that your firmware is up to date. The firmware itself can be found on the Ricoh site. A search of our Forum will help you install it.
Enjoy!

K-3 Mark III Hyper Program MTF Program Line Behavior
Posted By Roam Redway

An inveterate TAv shooter, I've recently been learning the "advanced" hyper program functions on my K-3 3. In general, I'm very pleased with the ability to switch modes so easily. And that green button is especially handy here.

The K-3 III e-book recommends setting the program line to MTF. As I understand it, this will choose combinations of shutter speed, aperture and ISO that are optimum, under shooting conditions, for a given DA lens.

When shooting today with a new-to-me DA 12-24 f/4, I noticed that the MTF Program line default is fully wide open: f/4.0. No matter how much light I have to work with (and no matter what the ISO is), the program never varies the aperture; it almost always varies just the shutter speed.

For comparison, I observed what happens with the DA 40 mm f/2.8 limited. Using the MTF program line, the camera always seems to prefer an aperture of f/5.0.

I can barely accept that an aperture of f/5.0 might be as sharp as the 40 mm ever gets.
I have trouble accepting that a wide open, f/4.0 setting on the 12-24 is as sharp as that lens gets.

With the 12-24, I also varied the program lines to see what "choices" the different settings have. When I used either "Auto" or "Normal," the camera varied aperture as well shutter and ISO. When I used "high speed" or "shallow depth of field," it always chose the fully open f/4.0. When I chose Maximum depth of field, it chose f/8.0.

Do those of you with more experience with Hyper Program see anything unusual in these Program Line behaviors?

Image Sync problems with Pentax KP

For what it's worth, I have a K-3 iii and use Image Sync on an iPad Mini. I have not been able to connect the two using just Wi-Fi even though my screen shows the same network icon lit up like yours. I have to also connect via Bluetooth. When I have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and connected, Image Sync works well.
