Thank you Craig for taking the trouble to look up the links that could help me.

It looks too complicated for my skills to be able to do what DaveR was able to accomplish. Right now, the camera is still usable with some of the lenses. I am afraid, if I try something as extensive as DaveR, I might make it worse.

I was looking up repairs online. I see some very bad reviews for Precision Camera. Does anyone have experience with KEH? What are the other reliable options to get the camera repaired.

I have not heard from the seller who sold me the camrea. Looks like he sold me the camera without revealing this potential problem he should have clearly known. :(

Yes, the empty hole is the damaged screw hole. I have written to the seller. I hope he replies.

In the meantime, what are my options? If I want to repair the broken screw hole, how can I do it? After all, the screw just needs to be able to hold in place. If there is a reliable way of doing it, maybe I am good.

Would the mount on a K-30 be used to replace the assembly on K1? If so, how complex would the replacement be? If I send the camera for repair, how much would I need to expect to pay?

Thank you Steve for your observation. I bought the K1 on this forum market place some time ago. I never had any problem with the camera for quite some time till the heavy Tamron 70-200mm showed issues. Looks like the previous owner had done some repairs on this as you observed. I will try to contact him and see if he can give some insights.

Any suggestions for a good repair shop in the bay area, California? I am not sure where to go with everything shut down due to Coronavirus.

I sent the Tamron lens for repair. Tamron replaced the mount on the lens. But, when I got back the lens, the camera was still not communicating with the lens. So, there was no problem with the lens in the first place. I removed the lens mount plate on my K1 camera and found one of the plastic screw holders was broken. Please see the attached photo.

I looked for the broken piece inside the camera but could not. Is there a way to fix the screw hole so that it can hold the screw in place? Would it require me to send the camera for repair? I have an old k-x camera. Would it be possible to replace the mount of K1 with the k-30?

After I put back the plate in place, I find a few more lenses are not communicating with the camera.

I checked the screws on both the Tamron 70-200 and K1. They were not loose. What I found was if I point the camera towards the ceiling with this lens attached, it can communicate the aperture value and I can even change it. As soon as I point the lens anywhere else, I lose communication.

To check if the weight of the lens is causing the mounts to not touch properly causing the issue, I tried an even heavier lens, the Sigma 50-500mm which did not have any issue.

That is a good observation. I have never touched the screws since i bought the lens. The lens when I got from adorama though sold as "used" looked brand new to me. I would say the the screws were never replaced.

The K-1 is not under warranty. Where can I get the mount checked? Are there any simple tests that I can do myself before getting checked professionally. As I said before, I see no issues with other lenses.

---------- Post added 02-12-20 at 02:35 PM ----------

Thanks for explaining this to me.

How would I then decide if the problem is with the lens or the camera? Do I need to get both checked? Both are not under warranty. Where would be a good place to go?

I also tend to hold the lens by the tripod foot as it is not comfortable to hang the camera by the neck strap for too long with such a heavy lens.

I do have JIS head screwdriver set. Maybe, I will carefully try to tighten the mounts and see if it helps.

Thanks for the help.

Last night I tried the Tamron 70-200mm on my K-30. This camera did not have a problem reading the aperture value or changing
the aperture value. Though, the K-30 has the problem with aperture getting stuck and all pictures come out dark.

Now, this is confusing. I have no issue with any of my other lenses on the K-1 except the Tamron 70-200. I do feel there is some play in the mount of this lens when attached to the K-1. When twisted and held in place the K-1 is able to read the aperture value. I don't feel this kind of play in any other lenses. Do I need to be concerned if there is a problem with the mount on the K-1? The Tamron 70-200 is a heavy lens. I mostly hang the camera attached with this lens by the neck strap. Would that stress the mount?

Should I try to tighten the screws on the mount for both the lens and the camera? I don't want to mess with anything without knowing what I am doing.

Thanks for your help.

I have a k-x somewhere in my closet with the aperture control problem where the aperture gets stuck and all pictures come out dark. I have not bothered to fix it after I got my K-1. I could try to put the Tamron 70-200mm on it and see if it even reads the aperture. Thanks for the tip.

The Tamron 70-200mm has functioned fully and wonderfully on my K-1 for over a year now. It is one of my favorite lenses. I don't see any issue with my other lenses with the K-1. Only this Tamron has a problem.

Thanks for the picture. So, my lens' pins are OK. Looks like I need to send it in for repair. Do you know where I can get it fixed economically in USA?

Thanks for the logical analysis. I am now afraid the repair will not be "cheap" :(

I checked a couple of my other lenses and did find the pin in that position in those lenses. That is why I suspected that the pin on the Tamron has fallen off. My K-1 does not have any problem with my other lens and shows the aperture value which I can adjust normally. On this Tamron, when I push and hold the lens in a particular way, the aperture value is displayed and can be adjusted. But I get a pair of dashed lines (manual aperture sign) when I let go.

I found my Tamron 70-200mm lens' aperture info was not showing on my K1. It would show only when pressed and tilted at an angle. When I tried to clean the contact pins, found that the Aperture info pin is missing (3rd contact pin on the lens). Is there a way to fix it myself or do I need to send it for repairs? I don't know how this happened. It was fine when I used it before.

Thanks.

I just saw that Phottix Odin II TTL is available for Pentax at https://www.adorama.com/ph89080.html?. I have not found any comments by actual users. What do you think about it? If it is as good as reviewers of Canon, Nikon and Sony users say, I want it.

Travel choice: k3 or k1?

Thank you all for your replies. It looks like the vote is for K3. I might go with it. What I think I will miss with not having K1 is, in mixed lighting and fast situations with toddlers running around, the flash might not light up where I intend. In such situations, I can pull out a lot more shadows with K1 than with K3 in post, which might give me more keepers. Of course, that will be with the added weight I will have to carry. What do you think of this combo:
K1, 24-70mm, 55-300mm, flash which will reduce the weight and still give me the advantage of K1?

I have been using k3 for over 2 years and have all the lenses that I wish to have and was pretty happy with the setup. Recently, I acquired the full frame K1, FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM, FA 24-70mm f/2.8ED SDM , Sigma 35mm Art as someone was selling the set for a good price. Initially, I regretted the purchase as the whole setup was heavy and I felt did not give me better pictures than what I was getting with the k3 with Sigma 10-20mm, SMCP-DA 17-70mm f/4 and the Tamron 70-200mm, Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 that I already had.

I have now been using the K1 exclusively for last 2-3 months and have come to appreciate it better. I love the way I can lift the shadows so much in Post. They dynamic range is much better.

Next month I am travelling to India to visit family and friends. I very much want to take the K1 with me, but I am hesitant as it is so much heavier than equivalent setup with k3. I will be mostly taking pictures of people in their living rooms, birthday parties of toddlers, touristy photos, maybe a few landscapes etc.

What would you suggest I take with me on this trip? Here are my choices:
1. K1+FA 24-70mm f/2.8+Tamron 70-200mm+Pentax AF540FGZ II Flash (+Sigma 10-20mm used in crop mode, if I want to use filters for landscape)
2. K3+17-70mm f/4+DA 55-300mm+Sigma 10-20mm+Pentax AF540FGZ II Flash

I want to be able to get good IQ but at the same time I don't want a too heavy setup. Any suggestions?

AF540FGZ II distance in wireless

Thanks Mcgregni and Steve for helping me out. I think at the moment flash off camera in manual is kind of mystery to me. I will try to use the Steve's formula (or is it Kaseki's?) and actually take some photos and evaluate and slowly go up from there. My guess is, with some practice I should get a hang of it all. I may have to beg my family to be patient with me till then :)

The problem I have with the histogram when I use P-TTL with extreme ambient light like looking into sunset or darker skies, the flash does not expose my subject well but the histogram looks OK. Maybe, I need to practice more and learn to read the histogram better. I am hoping that going fully manual I will get more consistent results that I want.

I will look at phone apps that might help me get what I am missing with the absence of "A-mode" on my flash.

I have started reading on Strobist. There is a lot to learn but it should be exciting and rewarding.

Thank you all for being of so much help.

AF540FGZ II distance in wireless

Thank you very much for clearing it for me that the range and distance indications cannot be transmitted when the flash is in wireless mode. It would help me if there was a possibility of entering the ISO and aperture on the flash itself to get the distance indication. Is it only by trial and error that I will find out what the distance, power level and zoom of the flash that I need to use? Being busy with work, I get very few photo taking opportunities of my family. It might take very long for me to learn by trail and error. I found that in extreme lighting conditions like shooting into the sun or against the backdrop of dark skies, the P-TTL gives wrong exposures where I need. That is why I wanted to do it manually and was looking for some sure fire ways of getting correct exposures before getting creative with off camera flash. Are there any ways to quickly learn to get correct exposures with wireless flash?

I have been using a AF540FGZ II flash on my K3 for a year only mounting on the camera. I use it only to shoot family and friends photos. I am still a very beginning learner. I now want to use the flash off camera. When I take it off camera in wireless mode, I don't see the distance scale on either P-TTL or M modes. Can someone explain to me how to find the right distance for the flash when used wireless?
